I`m looking for a sung version of the ballad "Robin Hood and the Bishop of Hereford". Not only the tune, I already have that, but I need the tune with the text sung to it!

From memory, there is a copy in Roy Palmer's "A Book of British Ballads", but I've left my copy in the office, so I can't confirm that for a couple of days. Maybe someone else can.

The version in Palmer's Everyman's Book of British Ballads (no. 46) is a George Stone version, which is in the DT (Click here). The first midi (TUNE FILE: RHOODBSH) is the tune to it.

thanks for all the replies, but I think I kind of mislead you, I`m not only looking for the tune, but for a mp3 (or sth similar) where the ballad is sung to th tune. Do you know if this is available on the internet?

Anyone got any information about the melody for this song? Loxley have been asked to sing for the Queen when she comes to Hereford in July and this would be a good song for us to sing!

Tony Rose sang it memorably on his Young Hunting lp [Trailer 1970]. Probably on one of his later CDs also?

A.L. Lloyd's version from the 1950's Riverside series "The English and Scottish Popular Ballads" is now available on the Fellside CD "Bramble Briars and Beams of the Sun".

Sal - there are two tunes in the EFDSS Take 6 collection, one the George Gardiner collection (Ref: GG/1/13/797) and one from the Hammond collection (Ref: HAM/4/27/24) (You can just search for Robin Hood and the Bishop of Hereford and you'll get both).

There is also a tune in Simpson's The British Broadside Ballad and its Music, which you can find in Bruce Olson's site from the drop-down at the top of this page - or here's a direct link to his abc file for the tunes; it's tune number 393. This one is quite close to the version Tony Rose sang. (This was from a late 18c songsheet The Bishop of Hereford and Ritson printed a similar copy).

But if you want the closest to Tony Rose's song, that's the version in Chappell Popular Music of the Olden Times, vol II, p395. You can download a copy of Chappell from archive.org. The Chappell tune is from another earlier songsheet The Bishop of Hereford's entertainment by Robin Hood...in Merry Barnsdale"

I've just dug out my vinyl copy of Young Hunting and Tony's notes say that he did get words and tune from Chappell (though, from memory, he's made a few changes to the tune as given in Chappell).

I wouldn't recommend Lloyd's version simply because it has too many "derry derry downs" in funny places.

Of course, that does seem to be the way it was sung by somebody.

The version collected by Hammond version in Take6 (from J.Vincent of Wareham), that I referenced above, had 2 derry down refrains marked on the music.
