Subject: Folk music in Chicago From: Barb'ry Date: 17 May 03 - 06:24 PM My husband is going (without me the swine) to a conference in Chicago, arriving there on Friday 30th May, until the following Wednesday, and reckons he can't last without some music/singing! Are there any mudcatters in the area who may be able to meet up with him/give him directions etc? He will be bringing his concertina but can be bribed not to play it - don't think you can stop him singing though! Thanks Barbara |
Subject: RE: Folk music in Chicago From: MAG Date: 17 May 03 - 08:27 PM There's some kind of session at the Abbey Pub on sunday or Monday. And I think Fred Holstein is playing there on Saturday -- a Chicago Institution. -- MA |
Subject: RE: Folk music in Chicago From: GUEST,ET Date: 17 May 03 - 11:07 PM Egad - don't forget to check in at the Old Town School of Folk Music.. the halls resound. I was there 10 minutes (to meet a friend) and dragged in to be audience/guinea pig for a dance teacher...nice friendly place. I even think they're online by now but you'll have to find out through www.google.com. Friendliest dern place in the city. Elaine in Michigan though 20+ years in Chicago. Also Hogeye Music in Evanston does house concerts (teeny place, maybe room for 30 close friends) occasionally with dynamite "coffee bean" shop just down the block. Easy to get to on the "el", just (going north towards Howard)get on the Evanston train, then off at Central hang a left about 1 block. Museum of Broadcast History has a station in the downtown Chicago Public library, complete with recreation of "fibber McGee's closet" if you're interested in old time radio. BTW, Jenny Armstrong lives in Evanston (or did) has a studio in the Evanston Arts Center, with a unique clause - no bagpipe playing...(well, as of 2 years ago when I left). |

Subject: RE: Folk music in Chicago From: GUEST Date: 18 May 03 - 07:12 PM Irish Music Night on Monday nights at Martyr's. Typically a couple of locals playing on stage. No cover. Usually a pretty good show especially for the price. Sometimes Brendan Bulger and Billy Knox, or Kieran O'Hare and Liz Knowles. Good stuff. Rich |
Subject: RE: Folk music in Chicago From: Wotcha Date: 18 May 03 - 07:16 PM Try the Gallery Cabaret for its Open Mics on Sunday and Thursday nights (a really great crowd of locals there). On Tuesdays, the Abbey Pub does an Open Mic (which was being filmed for local TV recently). The Abbey has sessions on Sundays as do a number of other bars in Chicago. Enjoy. Cheers, Brian |
Subject: RE: Folk music in Chicago From: Wotcha Date: 18 May 03 - 07:18 PM Forgot to add: If you have a concertina, contact Tom and Chris Kastle who do shanty sessions at the Old Town School of Folk Music. They have a website which will lead you to things nautical in the Great Lakes tradition. You may even find a shanty sing at the Sheridan Shores Yacht Club ... Cheers, Brian |
