Subject: RE: Review: DWDITTY CD From: katlaughing Date: 29 May 03 - 05:45 PM Okay, I've been meaning to get this done, so... Wanna know WHO is DW Ditty? He's infectious! He's smooth strummin', with a gravely, smoky-jest-right voice, and arrangements woven together so well they are seamless. And, I can't get enough of his new CD! I find myself singing at odd moments I'm satisfied (and tickled, too) and then on to a snippet of one of the other songs. My test of a CD is if it is good, I will remember a tune or two. If it is REALLY good I will remember most of the tunes and some of the words. If it is SUPER I will get all of the tunes down AND actually get enough of the words, from a few *listens*, to sing along. That last is what I've been doing with DW's CD and I do not say that lightly. I know some people may think I gush too much and am not critical enough, but I go by what I feel in my heart and what emotions come through when the music touches me, THEN I pay attention to things like technique, tone, etc. Overall, this is a superb CD. There is not one cut I don't enjoy. A couple of special ones I esp. love hearing are DW's own songs, Footprints, love those *two* sets of prints! and, Shadows of the Night Time with its jaunty lilt, which I know sounds weird for a blues piece, but it moves right along and is a familiar old friend from HearMe days. Other cuts include: Come Back Baby Mance Lipscomb - high drool factor, gals! But I Was Cool Oscar Brown, Jr. - oh, yeah! I cry me a river over this one, as well as laugh! Invitation to the Blues Tom Waits - this one fits right in with some of our old private eye story threads! JenEllen are ya listening?**BG** I'm Satisfied (and Tickled, too) Mississippi John Hurt - oh, baby you know I love you Another toe-tapping, infectious one, ya just gotta sing along it's so well done and such a great song! Cold Tatoo W. Burdon - this one grabs me every time I hear it; it stirs my soul...love's cold tatoo on your heart incredible lyrics and impeccable delivery Footprints - DW's own, a beautiful song of love, looking back, and commitment Bad Dream Blues Dave Van Ronk - True blues, ohhhh, bay-bee! Poor fellah Simple Twist of Fate Bob Dylan - a whole new take on this song, for me and I love it. This is one I started singing along to right away. Well done, DW! What A Wonderful World George Weiss - one of my all time favourites. I didn't think I'd ever like it by anyone but Louis Armstrong. I was wrong. Straight to my heart, DW, thanks so much for including this one. Lonely At The Top Randy Newman - poor fellah, again!:-) Who says success brings happiness? Just A Little While E. M. Bartlett - a really lovely, sweet song, DW's lead in is so soothing and melodic..the strings just set up a peaceful vibration down to my toes..then he comes in to sing about passing on to be with friends in heaven. I've added this cut, BY DW, to my list of songs for my transition party. Lie to Me Dewey Burns - just keep the hurting from coming too soon I Just Don't Look Good Naked Anymore Sheb Wooley/Dick Feller - need I say more? Great delivery! Inspired the "Almost Hit" on the other thread I Just Don't Look Good In An Armani Anymore! Shadows of the Night Time DW aka Rich G - YES!! Taj, Waits, Van Ronk, eat your hearts out, this is one HELL of a GOOD Song! SHould be a best seller! Every Time It Rains Randy Newman - what a perfect end for this CD - slow, soothing, a little sad, and so melodic...anyone who has ever loved and lost will be touched by this beautiful cover. DW, thank you, again, for this well-done and wonderful CD. I'll probably have to order a few extras just in case I wear this one out, too! Bravo!! luvyakat |

Subject: RE: Review: DWDITTY CD From: GUEST,Jon Date: 20 Jun 03 - 08:07 AM dwditty and I go back a long while in terms of "Internet sessions" on Hearme and Paltalk. Like many others, from about the first time I heard him, I felt strongly that he should make a CD. I was quite delighted when I learned it had finally happened. I was a little late in ordering my copy but it arrived today and I have just given it its first playing. The CD is of the quality I had expected from dwditty and consits of a well thought out selection of songs which all suit his gruff but tuneful and pleasant to listen to singing style as well as his mostly finger picking guitar accompanyment. The CD includes 2 of his own songs; "Footprints" and "Shadows of the Night Time" which fit right into his selection and are every bit as good as the songs written by better known people. The small "blip" for me was that I didn't particularly enjoy "But I was Cool" but that's just me and pleasing me with 14/15 tracks is pretty good going. As for a favourite song, I could not pick one out - there are simply to many. All, in all, an excellent job dw! Jon |
Subject: RE: Review: DWDITTY CD From: Art Thieme Date: 20 Jun 03 - 12:05 PM I enjoyed the CD quite a lot D.W. Your style is more gentle than VanRonk, even prettier. Your voice, well, like the Scotch I used to enjoy so much before the doc told me to quit, that too was an acquired taste. But VanRonk, Waits and Dylan, Peter Stampfel and Uncle Dave Macon---John McCormack and even Baez----all were surprising at first. (Baez showed me that a pure rather operatic soprano needn't sound like the night the orphanage burnt down.) A fine creation. Get the next one out before another fifty years goes by !!! Art Thieme |
Subject: RE: Review: DWDITTY CD From: alison Date: 20 Jun 03 - 10:03 PM mine arrived a few weeks back....... Subject: RE: Review: DWDITTY CD From: dwditty Date: 21 Jun 03 - 07:57 PM Thank you all so much for the kind words. They mean a great deal to me. Actually, Alison, my trick is to gargle onion soup mix before I sing. I found gravel was just a bit too much. Thanks again, mudcatters/friends, for your support. dw |
Subject: RE: Review: DWDITTY CD From: katlaughing Date: 21 Jun 03 - 08:05 PM dw, Rog and I heard some supposed blues harp whiz on NPR this morning, going on about his new CD, of which they played a few cuts, including one of him trying to sing blues. It sucked! We both looked at each other and said, "They should hear DW!" You have the guy beat hands down! |
Subject: RE: Review: DWDITTY CD From: dwditty Date: 22 Jun 03 - 08:23 PM Hey, Thanks again Kat. I am just getting it out to stations now, so hopefully one day when you tune in you will hear it broadcast. I sure don't view music as a competition (well, I guess the old masters did cut heads whenever they could), but I do appreciate you taking the time to both notice and let me know. dw |
