Subject: Title Request: Mo Ghille Mear From: MudGuard Date: 17 May 03 - 07:06 PM On my CD "éist [songs in their native language...]" there is a recording of the song "Mo Ghille Mear" sung by Mary Black. I know there is an English-language song to the same tune - but I can't remember which it is. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance! MudGuard/Andy |
Subject: RE: Title Request: Mo Ghille Mear From: Felipa Date: 17 May 03 - 07:36 PM It could be that you are thinking of the translation. It is also (most often) spelled "Mo Ghile Mear" (although "Mo Ghille Mear" is probably more correct historically). There are many threads concerning this song, but since you are interested in the English language version, see Sting version |
Subject: RE: Title Request: Mo Ghille Mear From: Blackcatter Date: 17 May 03 - 11:56 PM Yes, it's just a translation - the typical title of the English lyrics is "Our Hero" and the song is about Bonnie Prince Charlie who was hoped to be the salvation of the Irish along with the Scots. |
Subject: RE: Title Request: Mo Ghille Mear From: MudGuard Date: 18 May 03 - 04:09 AM Thanks for your help! Although - I am not really sure whether it was the translation that I have heard, the words don't fit with my memory (I can't remember the exact words, but I remember it was something about parting or about leaving...) Subject: RE: Title Request: Mo Ghille Mear From: GUEST,Maurice Date: 18 May 03 - 03:07 PM A song that sounds a bit similar is "Will ye no' come back again"...maybe thats the one you're thinking of. |
Subject: RE: Title Request: Mo Ghille Mear From: Blackcatter Date: 18 May 03 - 10:08 PM Not only sounds similar, but it's another Charlie song. |
Subject: RE: Title Request: Mo Ghille Mear From: Little Robyn Date: 18 May 03 - 10:40 PM Yes,'Will ye no' is supposed to be the English version of 'Mo Ghille Mear'. Robyn |
Subject: RE: Title Request: Mo Ghille Mear From: belfast Date: 19 May 03 - 08:07 AM The Chieftains album "Long Black Veil" has an English language version sung by none other than Sting. The chorus is in Irish which Paddy Moloney wrote out phonetically for him. It's a wonderful album.I will confess, however, that I had listened to the CD several times before it dawned on me that Sting was singing in English and I doubt if I could transcribe it. |
Subject: RE: Title Request: Mo Ghille Mear From: GUEST,Philippa Date: 19 May 03 - 11:14 AM and why should you, Belfast, when someone else has already done so ?(see link in the second message on this thread) |
Subject: RE: Title Request: Mo Ghille Mear From: Blackcatter Date: 19 May 03 - 12:35 PM And Belfast, I'm glad someone else likes Stings version. The Chieftains have been criticized for "allowing" pop singers like Sting sing trad songs. |
Subject: RE: Title Request: Mo Ghille Mear From: GUEST Date: 24 May 03 - 08:47 AM It is really irritating when someone makes a posting without having properly read all the previous postings in the thread - except when I do it, for in that case it is a simple and genuine oversight and could happen to anyone. |
