Subject: Licks, fills, embellishments?
From: Lane

I like to study guitarists and all of the little tricks and licks that they use within a chord, or moving from one chord to another... or little lead fills, embellishments that get you out of the boring, basic chords.... I wonder if folks would post some ideas, favorite little bits and pieces?

Things like this?

Well, I tried it but the symbols didn't line up properly. They did when I wrote 'em out but they got scrambled in the send.

To make text look like text, type this (WITHOUT THE SPACES):

< pre >

and end it with

< / pre >

See HTML practice thread-- I prolly have it all wrong.

Hope we get fiddle tricks here too, we have fiddlers as needs em.

Yep, that's how I did it, WYS. used the preformat (PRE) HTML coding. Just line things up how you want in the post box, bracket it with that code and it'll show up the way you set it up when it's posted.

It also helps to line things up in your layout before you post it if you use a monospace font like Courier to set it up. With a "proportional" font like Times or Arial, the characters aren't all the same width, so it's easy to get an extra space in (or left out), especially in a long line.

Listen to everything Maybelle Carter played. For folk, and simple country music, it doesn't get much better.......

Great.... write them out or describe them and I'll try to chart them (if I can figure it out)

JIK, the PRE code will automatically shift the font to a monospaced font when it is displayed on the page.

But yes, if you are laying the post out in preparation to post in a word processing program, you should use a mono-spaced font as you suggested. Or, if you are in Windows, just use Notepad.

In the key of G, you should be able to throw in some E pentatonic minor/blues scale licks without too much effort. You only
need one or two fingers to play most of them in the root position. For example:

E---3----3----0---------------------------------3------
B---0--------------3---0------------------------0------
G---0------------------------2--0---------------0------
D---0--------------------------------2---0------0------
A---2-------------------------------------------2------

Wonderful Thread LANE the MudCat should be full of similar discussions....perhaps devoted to treatments of particular pieces.

First off - I am primarily a keyboardist....mechanical piano.

A question at work, led into MudCat research on the "Wabash Cannonball," which led into a keyboard attempt at a blend with the "Orange Blossum Special."

I am quite proud of the results and my personal growth in trying to immitate a hammer/on hammer/off style....and the steady pounding beat of the steam engine in the left hand. (My brother did banjo)

The "train bell" is a simultanous E/Eb. The "whistle" is a wailing alternating-peddled B/Ab, G/Bb.

Is there a place on the MudCat to post MP3 samples and illustrations of the tones...AND DEFINATELY THE TAB involved in what LANE, CLUIN and FRANKHAM have illustrated.

Sincerely,

Gargoyle

NPR - National Public Radio had an example Monday of a rendering of "Take Me Out To the BallGame" that was lively and fun - snippets of things heard in passing are fun to workout.

A lot of the Carters' stuff, as well as J. Rogers licks are fairly rudimentary. But make no mistake; when played right, there's nothing better. As for learning them, well...... I'll say what my mom said to me when I was a kid, trying to get a handle on swome old time licks: 'figure them out for yourself.' -you'll remember them a lot better, and you'll also work towards developing your ear if you take the time to listen
Good luck

It might take you five minutes of play again and again - over a two week period - but I MUST agree - WORK THEM OUT FOR YOURSELF!

Great Advice SMOKEYJOE !@!

Sincerely

Gargoyle

With the exception of, non-folk, Mr. Peter Townsend recently mentioned and re-mentioned within this forum, it pays and pays and pays again to "fiddle about, fiddle about, fiddle about."

I am hesitant to post any advice - given the verbal lashing from Rick Fielding and the subsequent exit of my friend Mr. B.Seed....but....

At the end of a phrase simply bend UP....or bend DOWN....a half note ....or a two half-note "roll"

Better yet, start a new thread.

PRESENT a Tune....and let the "Mudcat Masters" PLAY with it in all of its variations...and all of its commentary....

Sincerely

Gargoyle

Perhaps, Mr. Joe, could convince Mr. Max, to create a third section...a slower moving section...which might remain...

"above the line"

for an entire week on end....so that various MUSICIANS could discuss the nuances and intrigues of various tonations, modalities, treatments, and other such "BORING" trivia that might intrest the "real people" who founded these shouls.

What a great idea for a thread! I am really enjoying "fiddling" around with these tabs. This sort of thing can be a real boost to the picker who is looking for a little light at the end of the tunnel. Sharing ideas is good for everyone: the speaker as well as the listener. I really appreciate your efforts. Thanks.
