Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eight Freight Blues (Dave Goulder) From: HuwG Date: 02 Mar 22 - 03:53 AM If you can work the chords out from this video clip, you're doing better than I have, so far. Some other translations: "Eight freight" probably refers to an LMS Class 8F freight locomotive. Not a bad design, but was used for the drudge tasks of slow freight, especially hauling coal trains. The line "With a thousand tons of coal behind and a tender full of slack" refers to the common gripe of pulling overloaded trains of high quality coal from colliery to depot or power station, while that supplied to the locomotive was low quality sweepings. The NUR and ASLEF were at daggers drawn with each other and with British Rail management for most of the sixties and seventies. Their leaders frequently appeared on television and did their best to appear to be hunourless Stalinist automatons. Their uncompromising surliness appeared to have percolated down to their members. "Full forward gear, with the regulator open wide"; as it sounds, the equivalent of flooring the throttle on a car to accelerate to the next red light, except that it isn't merely a question of forcing more fuel through the injectors, the poor junior on the other side of the cab has to shovel like mad. Oddly, the writer O.S.Nock used to complain of drivers who did the opposite, using just a touch of regulator with full cutoff, so they produced insufficient draught to stop the fire becoming a sullen black slough of barely burning coal. |

Subject: Lyr Add: EIGHT FREIGHT BLUES (Dave Goulder) From: robd Date: 08 Dec 10 - 04:32 PM Always catching up, years late, here it is: EIGHT FREIGHT BLUES (Dave Goulder) Smoke in my eyes, soot in my hair, cinders in my shoes, I'm watching the needle falling away and singing the eight freight blues. Well, we're running late in a sorry state on eighty-two-fifteen She's overdue for boiler work and I can't get her to steam. With a thousand tons of coal behind and a tender full of slag Me mates sent me to Coventry and they just won't answer back Across the cab the driver sits and he's staring straight ahead He's not spoken to me for eighteen months since I started out of the shed He's drawn a line across the cab for each of us to stand Since he found I'd joined the NUR(1) while he was a ASLEF(2) man I filed her thin and piled it in but still she would not go When the water dropped I forced a stop on the mainline for a blow I smashed the clinker, cleaned the fire, tried every trick I know With a rake and dart, but that old fart blames me for all our woes With a one and sixty climb ahead and the water out of sight We'll have to stop and blow her up for the second time tonight The load comes on the engine and the starter's showing green. I'm looking for the banker but no banker's to be seen The driver comes from Motherwell, his face I can't abide He only knows full forward gear with the regulator wide I can't touch his injector, and mine is short of breath I wish his balls would turn to bulldogs and bite the sod to death (1) National Union of Railwaymen (2) Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eight Freight Blues (Dave Goulder) From: Jim Dixon Date: 28 Oct 09 - 10:13 PM Dave Goulder's song EIGHT FREIGHT BLUES appeared first on his album "The Man Who Put the Engine in the Chip Shop" which is unavailable, but it's now on a newer album "The Golden Days of Steam." His web site has an audio clip from which I transcribed this: Smoke in my eyes, soot in my hair, cinders in my shoes, I'm watching the needle falling away and singin' the eight freight blues. Well, we're running late in sorry state on eighty-two-fifteen She's overdue for boiler work and I can't get her to steam. With a thousand tons.... |
