I've been listening to the Nashville Mandolin Ensemble's version of Tarrega's Recuerdos de la Alhambra and I'm wanting to give it a try myself -- for better or worse ;-) I figure that at least I'll get some really good tremelo practice out of the attempt!

Anyway, I've searched the internet for a book with the mandolin tablature for this piece; but, all I've been able to find is individual tabs for guitar.

Do any of you fellow mando players know where I can find one? I'm interested in learning more Spanish/Latin classical pieces, so if you can recommend any other books, I'd really appreciate it.

All the best, Áine

Hi Áine,

Try this one:

Alhambra

Hope it's what you need.

Thanks, Giac. I found that one last night; but, it's for the guitar and it's a MusEdit program file, a software program that I don't have.

Frustrating, ain't it?!?

All the best, Áine

Well, I've done some more searching, and I found this book and cd package from Butch Baldassari and John Mock, Cantabile at Soundart Recordings, that contains this piece.

There are a several nice pieces on the CD; but, the book is in standard notation only. I've gone ahead and ordered it; but, if anyone can point me at a tablature source for Recuerdos, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks a bunch, Áine

This link is from a nice person on the Mandolin Cafe message board. It's a standard notation for guitar of Recuerdos on Stanley Yates' website. It looks like a very well done notation, so you folks who play classical guitar should check it out.

Still looking for the mando tab, though . . .

All the best, Áine

(I just love talking to myself; but, I thought I'd include this bit of information just in case some 'Catter in the future is looking for it . . .)

I have it from a source at the Mandolin Cafe that Howard Frye did the arrangement of Recuerdos for the Nashville Mandolin Ensemble. It's available from Plucked Strings (arr. for two mandolins and guitar). It is in standard notation, so, it looks like I'm going to have to write the tablature myself (just for the lead mandolin, though).

Even though this is going to be a challenge, I think I'll probably be able to read standard notation pretty well after it's all over! ;-)

All the best, Áine

WOW - I had never thought about playing Tarrega's "Recuerdos de la Alhambra" on Mandolin! Can you link to any YouTube videos of it? I'd love to hear it. I play classical guitar but am not at a level where I can play that piece yet. However, I have written an article on it, and I would love to get feedback on it:

"Recuerdos de la Alhambra" for Classical Guitar by Francisco Tarrega

Please let me know what you think!

For those who don't know what this piece sounds like, here's a MIDI: Click to play.

Yes, it would be a lovely piece to arrange for mandolin, but I think it would work better as a duet for mandolin and guitar. That way it would be within the reach of many folk musicians, whereas the original, scored for solo guitar, would be much too difficult for most.

A guitar + mandolin arrangement (but I think the guitar is a bit too aggressive)
