I can't find them here, Kendall. Do you mean the one by John McCutcheon on his Live at Wolf Trap album?
Where is that Brown's Head?
-Joe Offer-

The Old Brown's Head Light
words & music by John McCutcheon

He sat at the table his eyes burning red
Sayin', "Lucy, come see what the paper just said
"We knew it was coming tho' it still don't seem right
"They're taking the old Brown's Head Light"

"And what about Charlie, his wife, and his kid
"When computers perform all the work he once did
"It's back to the big ships to forage the sound
"With the family alone at some new place in town"

It's many a lost soul he's seen safely home
And many a loved one he's brought to their own
A voice in the darkness, a star in the night
A wish for good luck from the old Brown's Head Light

Well, it was Boon Island, Saddleback, Egg Rock, Dice Head
Every year one more wired or left there for dead
It's the same thing all over, but what I hate most
Is, Lucy, you know, we're the next ones up coast

It's many a lost soul I've seen safely home
And many a loved one I've brought to their own
A voice in the darkness, a star in the night
A wish for good luck from my home in the light

Well, you can call me old fashion and I guess that it's true
I should learn to adjust like most other folks do
But the work, like the salt, buries deep in your bones
From the years that you shepherd the folk safely home

Kendall, can you see the lighthouse from the mainland, or do you have to take the ferry to Vinalhaven? My log says I've seen 44 Maine lighthouses, but that's one I missed.

Someone asked McCutcheon to play this at a concet one time.
They said "Can you play that song about the beer?" "What
song abou the beer?" "You know, 'Brown's Head Light". . ."

;-)

No, Joe, the lighthouse is on the north shore of Vinalhaven, and Vinalhaven is about 15 miles from the mainland.
It's on your starboard side heading into the Fox Islands thoroughfare.
I've used it for a starting point in many a foggy days sailing.

The lyrics here are good but not quite the way he sings it on the Live at Wolf Trap album. Here's that version:

THE OLD BROWN'S HEAD LIGHT
words & music by John McCutcheon

He sat at the table, his eyes rimmed in red
Sayin', "Lucy, come see what the papers here said
We knew it was coming tho' it still don't seem right
That they're taking the old Brown's Head Light"

"And what about Charlie, what will he do
When computers perform the one job that he knew
Well it's back to the big ships to forage the sound
With the wife and the kids at some new place in town"

It's many a lost soul he's seen safely home
And many a loved one he's brought to their own
A voice in the darkness, a star in the night
A wish for good luck from the old Brown's Head Light

Well, it was Boon Island, Saddleback, Egg Rock, Dice Head
Every year one more wired or left there for dead
And it's one more old timer washed up on the shore
As they give you a gold watch and they show you the door

And it's many a lost soul he's seen safely home
And many a loved one he's brought to their own
A voice in the darkness, a star in the night
A wish for good luck from the old Brown's Head Light

"You may call me old fashioned and I guess that it's true
I just ain't learned to change quick as other folks do
But it's the same thing all over, and what I fear most
Is that, Lucy, you know, we're the next light up coast"

And it's many a lost soul I've seen safely home
Many a loved one I've brought to their own
A voice in the darkness, a star in the night
A wish for good luck from my home in the light

He sat at the table his eyes rimmed in red
Sayin', "Lucy, come see what the papers here said
Oh we knew it was coming but it still don't seem right
It's so hard to believe but it's in black and white
That they're taking the old Brown's Head Light
Oh they're taking the old Brown's Head Light."
------------------------------------------------
I just love this song, moves me to tears every time. I like to visit lighthouses here in Australia and I always think of this song and wonder how the lighthouse keepers here felt when they had to leave. John McCutcheon is one of my all time favourite songwriters and I love to sing his songs too!
Cheers
Jenny

Hi, Jenny-
I posted the lyrics from the John McCutcheon Website, so one would think they would be correct - but they aren't. I'm surprised that the McCutcheon Website would have such a sloppy transcription. I'm glad you caught the problem and corrected it.

I'm still kicking myself for not taking the time to visit the Brown's Head Light

I completed my 10-year Atlantic Coast Lighthouse Tour in 2000*, long before I got a digital camera. Maybe I should do it all over again. I visited almost all the mainland lights on the Atlantic Coast from Halifax to Key West, but I missed a number of island lights, like Brown's Head.

-Joe-

*I drove the coast two weeks every year for ten years, stopping at every lighthouse I could find. The last year, 2000, I was retired and took 6 weeks for my travels.

Joe, if you ever get to Vinalhaven you should also visit Heron Neck on the south end of the island.

I can no longer sing the song, but I recite it as a poem and it never fails to move me.

Joe, did you ever get to see the Cuckold? interesting name for a lighthouse. Matinicus rock is a way out to sea, so kinda hard to get to.

There are few things on my "Bucket list", but sailing out to Vinalhaven, and saying goodbye to Brown's head light is on it.
My friend, Gordon Bok and I still talk about one more trip out there, but, the thought always makes me think of a line from a song I wrote years ago: "I tell myself it's an old man's dream; my youth is past and gone; and that ocean rolls as it always has, it doesn't care that I'm not home."

I gave this to Larry Kaplan, and if he makes a tune for it,it wouldn't surprise me at all.

Hi, Kendall -
I missed the question you asked in August. My log says I sighted the Cuckolds Light at sunset on October 25, 1995. I remember that visit to Booth Bay Harbor very well. I found a nice bed and breakfast and negotiated a good price for their smallest room. I was the only guest there. As the landlord took me up the stairs to show me my room, we passed a magnificent room with a great view. I said, "Wouldn't you like to give me that room for the same price?" And he did. The whole area was just lovely, and the lighthouse (one of several in the area) was very distinctive because of a round foghorn with a cone-shaped roof.

I really should repeat my Main lighthouse tour, now that I have a digital camera and can take pictures with wild abandon.

What is it about Lighthouses Joe, I can't pass one either. They seem to act like a magnet to me. If you ever get the opportunity try driving the Wild Atlantic Way around the coast of Ireland . There are some magnificent lighthouses along the route from the Hook lighthouse down in the south east round to Mizen Hall all up the coast to Malin Head up in the north.

Know what you mean, Raggytash. I've sampled a good number of lighthouses in Ireland and Scotland. Only a few in England so far, so I guess I'll have to go back.
But there is no lighthouse paradise in the entire world, like the State of Maine. My birth state of Michigan has more lighthouses than Maine, but Maine lighthouses are in more dramatic locations.
