I'm running lunchtime singarounds (with festival guests, including Keith Donnelly, the Alan Bell Band, Anne Lennox-Martin)at Chippenham next weekend - in the Cause centre (non-smoking venue).   Hope to see some Catters - even though it coincides with the Admiral's big sing a few yards down the road.

Apologies, as I will be singing at the Leith Harbour, Edinburgh Maritime Festival this year.
Good luck. Enjoy!
See you soon.

I tried to find a thread about Chippenham but nothing came up. I must have been doing that around the same time as you put this one up! Great minds eh?

Please come and buy my lemonade...I have little mouths to feed.

I'll be there too, and will sing whenever I'm not helping with the lemonade! And possibly at the same time. That should drive away a few customers!

Any chance of a let up in the rain?

Hey what about a 'singaround the lemonade'(that's got a nice ring to it) trailer. That'd be fun, especially as I'll probably have few customers 'cos of the dreary weather. Bring a blanket or a chair...we can pinch 'em from Chez Nous! I've got a couple of big brollies. I'm getting excited already.

Chippenham weather forecast from a website is now offering Showers, Light Rain, Scattered Showers, and Showers, for Fri through Monday. I'm just wondering how we will know when the Showers stop and the Scattered Showers or the Light Rain begins?

Anyway, it all sounds decidedly damp. Just as well there are plenty of nice warm halls and pubs for us to congregate in!

Showers tend to be heavyish and shortish lived. Light rain can go on all day. It did yesterday.   And the heavy showers. Crosby was mentioned in the national weather reports yesterday as the wettest place in the country. Apparently we had half an inch in an hour or something.   Most of it seems to be in my car. :-(

That'll be Crosby as in Merchant Taylors then... yes I do remember you coming to Herga!

Apparently I'm compering an event entitled "Of Islands and Oceans" on Sunday. Do the Berry's know something we don't? Will there be an ark?

Comments on Chippenham Festival 2003?

I went, danced, played, sang, ate, drank, met lots of nice people and had a really great time.

Weather was dampish - but tolerable. Narrower range of entertainment than Sidmouth - but then, who who else has that much? Fish and chips not as good as Whitby - but Cornish pasties far better. some excellent real ales at reasonable prices (for Southern England.)

Highlights?

Excellent programme of concerts (had to miss some favourite performers because of other commitments, but those I did hear were all first-rate)

Lots of good street dancing to watch

Great crack in the Old Road Tavern (particularly the French music & dance session in the barn on Sunday night).

Super late ceilidh with Heckety and Gordon Potts

Wonderfully anarchic late-night singaround/session in the campsite ablutions block

Would recommend it to anyone as a first class festival.

Wassail!

Well I didn't go but I got a shaky eggplant from it... Manitas spent the weekend apparently either in the Old Road Tavern or scouring shops for ladies clothing.....

Should I start legal proceedings now or wait for dementia to set in fully?

Super weekend, as ever. What I like about Chippenham is there is so much going on there is always something to do. OK there's so much you have to compromise but it's all advertised and listed in the programme. You don't have to have private knowledege to know where things are happening.

Well, I went, I saw, I did and I came home!

I did in the rain, I did it the sun, I did it in the swimming pool, and then to cap it all (unexpectedly) I did it at the final Celidh (although I cocked up a bit doing at that one, 'cos it was unexpected)

Barring all that doing and me being very unwell I would say 'You all missed a damnably good weekend chaps and chapesses!'

This weekend, better health and Dusseldorf.....

Well, Debbie and I did a spot of backing vocals with Geoff and Caroline Walton in the Singaround at the Cause Hall - the first time that four members of Greensward have actually performed together when we're not gigging. Hopefully, just the first of many such occasions!

Cllr

I really enjoyed the weekend, and heard some great singing (including Mrs Lemon and Schantieman). Of Islands and Oceans was very like a Voices concert at Bedworth, MC'd by Johnny Collins, with other vocal contributions from John Connolly, Dave and Anni, Steve Jordan, Roy Clinging and me. (Venue fantastic acoustically, but hard on the bum on account of the seats being pews.)

Thank you James, Debbie, Geoff and Caroline (and Caroline's sister) for your spot in the Cause Centre singaround on Sunday.

Sorry I didn't manage to catch up with Mike of Northumbria (or Hexham Morris). When the sun shone on Monday morning I watched the percussive dancing near Butter Cross, and was really impressed by Footnotes.

LTS - there was an impressive range of shaky fruit and veg on offer. I thought the aubergine and carrot were just weird though.

Hovering Bob's right though - there was just loads of good stuff. I just hope, Cllr, you and Carol can make it next year.

Ms Lemon - I sampled your product on several occasions. It was always pleasant, but a real life-saver after dancing in the parade. Incidentally, it was me who obtained a Swiss Army knife for emergency repairs to your lemon-crushing machine. I trust it's fully recovered now - hope to see you again at Sidmouth, and/or Whitby.

Wassail!

My competition (The Lemonade Factory) does Sidmouth, Whitby is too far from the W/borders I'm afraid. I will be at Alcester, Warwick, Bridgnorth and Bromyard tho'. I do remember the swiss army knife, thank you for that... turned out to be a nut underneath the contraption after all.

Ah well, off to the bank with the hard earned dosh and back to the real world, now that the Schantieman has sailed off into the sunset.

I think it has something to do with the Banks being on holiday. So why was the National a week before Easter?

Can't everyone work-out when the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox is? ***BG***

Mr Red

Sometimes the National is a week after Easter, sometimes a week before. And very occasionally, when there's FMD, not either.

Some of the guests at Chippenham (eg Boden and Spiers and Roy Clinging)performed at Chester as well. Not quite as daft as the year that Collins and Mageean performed at Chippenham, then Cleethorpes, then back at Chippenham.

Next year's Chippenham will be 28-31 May 2004 (and the National will be 26-28 March).

hello folks

This is Julian, currently the displays organiser at Chippenham.

Thanks for all the good comments about the festival, I will pass them on at our wash-up meeting.

Generally the weather was good, it was just Sunday afternoon that was slightly disrupted by a bad shower but compared to '77 a mere drop in the ocean.

Old Pull and Push hold the record for distance over the weekend a few years back now though. They did Chippenham, Chester, Cleethorpes and then back to Chippenham for Monday evening. Now that is either stamina or sheer stupidity. I'll let you all decide.

I'll see some of you at ALcester and at Bromyard. And I hope to see all of you at Chippenham 2004.

Cheers

Julian

They have a 2 dance writing workshops with Pete Coe and Paul Wier (I think). One playing the other running and vice versa.

That's where I will be if I am not busy at the Island Park Arena on Sat morning.

it's better than cream for your whiskers,

it makes your coat shine,

after a night on the wine,

and also makes you feel friskers.

Went down for the day yesterday with mairi. A good lunchtime sing with the Admiral and Pearl, then did unusual (for me) things like watching dance displays, strolling round the town, eating, drinking Ms Lemon's lemonade, etc.

The evening sing at the Three Crowns seems well established now. I heard it ran till 3am Friday, and yesterday's was still going strong when we left at 12.30. Lots of Mudcatters there - alanww, my guru always said, Richard Atkins, Merrick (without Dairy), JudeL, John Henry.

Wish I could go back today & tomorrow

It rained (a little) early on Friday evening and again (heavy) about 4 pm on the Monday. By that time it did not matter too much, so it did rain but did not really affect anything too badly. And anyway, I was in the pub.

I did get to see Hexham Morris dance this year - it was damp on Saturday norning but the rain dried up before the dancing started.

I didn't have to look for Jeff Warner, because he was one of the booked guests in my Sunday singaround - the others were Hanging Johnny.

I had a really good time (and so did the bar staff at the Cause, I'm pleased to say).

Back next year!
