In Brussels, on October 15,2003 through Feb 15, 2004 there will be an exhibition of Le Banjo Americain, American Roots. The five-string banjo and some others will be featured with information about players and instruments. It will be held at the MIM (Musical Instrument Museum). Information can be obtained from:

La Mediatheque
Place de Amitie, 6 - 1160 Bruselles
or by E mailing: lamediatheque@lamediatheque.be

Gerald De Smaele is a 5-string banjo player who is interested in spreading 5-string banjo music in Europe and has studied the mountain music of the US South. He is now doing field work by filming with Patrick Ferryn in North Carolina and Virginia.

I understand that Bob Carlin will be at the opening. This should be of interest to those Mucatters in the Brussels area.

...and the current issue of the superb American magazine of old-timey music, THE OLD TIME HERALD, has a feature article on DERROLL ADAMS by Gerard De Smaele, Patrick Ferryn and Tucker Zimmerman. Derroll Adams is arguably the one who brought the 5-string banjo to Belgium. Things are definitely coming "full circle" as stated eloquently in another article in that same issue. It is titled FULL CIRCLE--Snapshots Of The Early Days Of The Folk Revival.

One of these days I will obtain and learn to use a SLIDE SCANNER. Then you all will see some truly amazing photos I took all around this nation on the folk scene for 35 years. How about Bill Monroe and Ike Everly doing a duet at the U. Of Chicago Folk Festival--circa 1964. Rev. Gary Davis at Andy Cohen's apartment in Chicago about that same time. Bukka White playing his guitar behind his head at that same festival; and others of Bukka at the Old Town School. I only kept the GOOD ONES, and tossed out at least 10 for every one I kept. Anbd I still have four or five hundred.

Until then,

Art Thieme
