Looking for a song called "The Battle of Decata Near Atlanta July 20, 1864" written by private in Hooker's 20th Army Corps, sung to the tune of Bonnie Blue Flag would like to find lyrics/music for book about the history of DeKalb County, Ga.

I can't resist renewing this, which I think is the first message on the mudcat, having used Max's new feature to search for older threads.

Anyway, it seems unfair to leave the first posting to this fair conference with no answer. Is there any new information out there?

I cannot find a "Decata" Georgia around Atlanta in the atlases I have. Any chance that this is really "Decatur" which is in DeKalb Cty just east of Atlanta. Dropping the final "r" is quite common in a lot of dialects and it si a short step to start spelling it the way it may be pronounced. There is also a Decatur, Alabama that was the site of a Civil War skirmish in July of 1864.

The city of Decatur was named for Stephen Decatur, who was a Naval hero in his day. It was incorporated on December 10, 1823. When the Western and Atlantic Railroad wanted to make Decatur a major stop on its line in the early 1830's, the people of Decatur didn't want all that would accompany the rail line and vetoed the proposal. The stop was moved about 7 miles down the road to a small area called Terminus. Later, that area was renamed Marthasville. Then two years after that was named Atlanta. During the Civil War, the Union troops moved into Decatur in July of 1864 which finally ended in the Battle of Decatur. It turned out to be one of the few victories for Confederate troops during the Battle of Atlanta time frame.

Hmmm. I see that the Battle of Decatur was also called the Battle of Bald Hill and there is at least a poem online about a fellow killed at the Battle of Bald Hill.

It's 73 F today in Decatur, Alabama, pop. 55,000. Grainger faced Hood in the battle of Decarur, 605 casualties, mostly Confederate.

Black troops who fought there belonged to the U. S. 14th Colored Infantry Regiment.

Still looking for this. The link cited by Amos is for the Battle at Decatur, Alabama, Oct 28, 1864. The South lost that one. Hood led the South in both cities. So far, it may be that there is no particular The Battle of Decatur, as such - just a skirmish od the The Battle of Atlanta, a few miles away.
