Who would you sooner believe: a man who's been on the telly or a woman who worked in adverstising?

Morse may have been rusticated, but in Lord Peter Whimsy's day, one was sent down!

There's no contradiction, Liz: you don't get sent down from Oxford, you get rusticated. (I read Inspector Morse as well!)

I must admit, when I lived in Yorkshire, as a youngest, I couldn't wait to hit the bright lights of the South, especially London. I suppose it is a sign of increasing age that, 30 years on, I find life on the Yorkshire borders far more exciting and infinitely more pleasurable.

If the up direction from Carlisle station is to London or Newcastle, and the up direction at Newcastle is to London or Carlisle, which is up and which down at Hexham? Answers on a postcard to somebody else, please.

If you think of Up as implying superior, I think that explains the motivation behind all the usages. Up North and Down South, that feels right. As for Oxford, that's an internal Southern matter, so only Southerners care.

As Mick has pointed out it depends on where you start from. Not sure where Rodesia is but I regard RHodesia as being north.

Interesting to see you looked it up though ...

So what happens when you go up to Oxford from London? If you get sent down from Oxford, how do you do it, because it's actually sideways?

We go up to London from railway practice. There are up and down lines, with up and down platforms on stations. The up line is the one going towards London.

It seems odd to me too. A bit like the famous road sign on the A1: Hatfield and the North. What - all of it?

I still consider anything foreign if it's further north than Blandford, Dorset... and as that's only about 20 odd miles from the south coast, it doesn't leave a lot.....

To add insult to injury, I'm considered a northerner because I don't live sarf o'da riva Taymes

Funny enough

our local co-op is a south midlands branch

so perhaps Bedfordshire people or up tut up north

Why do we go up smoke (London) when it's down?

The Antonine Wall is NORTH of Hadrian's. It is in what is currently Scotland but hopefully will someday be restored to be rightfully part of Northumbria. Lowland Scotland is of course English-speaking (well, sort of) as opposed to the Celtic fringes, and has more in common with Northern England than either have with the Highland Celts or Southerners.

This posting has been brought to you by the Northumbrian Liberation Front...but it is still true. Especially that bit about the Antonine Wall.

Incidentally, it has been argued that the Vallum, or ditch, south of Hadrian's Wall was put there to stop the Geordies stealing the lead from the roofs.

The Romans also built another wall to the south of Hadrians Wall just to make sure, it also kept the Geordies out as well. It was/is known as the Antonine Wall and is shown on the Matthew Paris map of England c.1250

And there's an "event" at Linslade (Leightion Buzzrd) on Sunday 8 June: there wil be a marquee for the musos, with "tune sessions" from 1-2 and 3-4 in the afternoon. Don't be put off by the word "tne", as I shall be singing (unless I'm asked not to, but I don't usually do requests!)

Oh, and there's Folk on the Green at Stony Stratford soon -- anyone got details?

Lidy, it's a long way off yet, but here's a weekend event in Hertfordshire that promises to be very good:
The Eighth Winter Sing at The Crown Inn, Buntingford, 14th to 16th November. Indoor camping.
Contact e-mail on their flyer is: RSteveRolt@aol.com

I went to a one-day event in Hitchin organised by the same people earlier in the year and it was excellent. A lovely crowd and great singing.

And if you dare to venture into Essex, there's Moreton Midsummer Festival (near Ongar) coming up on 14th-15th June.

Cheers!

Er.... don't let the Scots hear you calling them English.... Hadrian was on THIS side of the wall, and it was built as a psychological barrier at the end of the Roman Empire rather than any defensive or offensive feature.

Call the Scots, English and we could have Bannockburn all over again!

Round here (5 miles south of Watford), the north-south divide is the Thames. But depending where you are in Bucks you might even make Herga on a Monday (although, admittedly, Chesham is in Bucks and Wealdstone isn't).

There's enough middle there for us all to smack, Liz -- or is it just a well-padded jumper?

Talking of divides, when you get Oop North you find its actually an East-West divide, conspicuously marked out with a chain of mountains. Without it, nobody would be able to tell the Lanckies fromthe Yorkies; althogh I suppose they can tell each other apart.

Well, a lot of the Mudcatters down South are from the West Midlands, doing sterling missionary work. The Bucks and Beds crowd post here quite often,Julie B, Steve Parkes and others. Leadfingers usually has the skinny on folk things in Berks, King Street Smith on the skiffle scene and I've tried to interest people in the blues scene hereabouts to a deafening silence.... they are out there....

Ok, there seems to be an awful lot going on "oop narth" (i'm not ridiculing, my family are Hull-based and I love them dearly!). And there seems to be a bit going on "dahn sahth", mostly represented by the good folks of southern hampshire. I live in Bucks and spend a lot of time in London. Anyone else reckon this area is seriously lacking in decent goings on music wise? Or do I just not know where it's happening? It seems that all the festivals I'm off to are a good two hour's drive from me etc.
Anyone got any triad secrets (beds bucks herts; not some weird shanghai links)?!
Would love to hear abou them.
Cheers
Lidy
