Subject: RE: From Max: Mudcat Going Down From: Joe Offer Date: 05 Jun 03 - 12:27 PM So, anybody want to make bets about whether Art Thieme is going to be a father in nine months? I dunno. I keep thinking I'm going to become a grandfather some day soon, and I'd swear Art's older than I am. He talks a good game, though... -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: From Max: Mudcat Going Down From: Don Firth Date: 05 Jun 03 - 12:04 PM Well, open mike, I was heard to moan softly a number of times, but going on the idea that Mudcat would be down until June 10th, I didn't even try it for a couple of days. I found out just now! Got a whole chapter on the book finished, and a draft for a magazine article written, though! And the sun is shining!! Don Firth |

Subject: RE: From Max: Mudcat Going Down From: open mike Date: 31 May 03 - 07:31 PM would Linus stand at the dryer and watch his blankie going 'round til it was done? Subject: RE: From Max: Mudcat Going Down From: GUEST,Jon Date: 31 May 03 - 06:50 PM Joe, it may not be needed but yes we would do that on both sites Pip and I operate. Either post yourself or email me and any information needed to access a temp MC site will be there. |

Subject: RE: From Max: Mudcat Going Down From: Art Thieme Date: 31 May 03 - 04:25 PM I only mentioned HANK SNOW above to give my post a MUSIC aspect so it could be included both as music and as B.S. ;-) Art |
Subject: RE: From Max: Mudcat Going Down From: Art Thieme Date: 31 May 03 - 04:22 PM MAX... Nine months later after this little hiatus of yours---mark my words--------here comes the Mudcat's own Baby Boom generation!!! (We were all so bored that sex was all that could placate us while you were "Moving On", as hank Snow used to say.)---------- And twenty years f-u-r-t-h-e-r down the road, they come of age and, like we remnants of the 60s generation, they challenge Emperor George W. Bush. For the first time since his coup put him in as dictator of the U.S.A., there is, finally, a group capable of possibly deposing the man. A genetically engineered Al Gore clone (one with balls and a will to live) will lead them in the revolution that will restore Socialism. It will be a democracy and everyone will, by then, be fully able see the validity of Socialism. It will be freely chosen in an election, and put back on the front burner where it has always belonged. --- And then, fianlly, health care for all in the world can and will become a reality. Dick Cheney will recieve his THIRTIETH artificial heart and retire to the Smithsonian Institution as an exhibit in their famous tribute to Madame Toussaud's Wax Museum as an example of a human being turned into an artform. He will replace their "PORTRAIT OF DORIAN GRAY". (The original artist, Ivan Albright's heirs will protest---but to no avail.) Art Thieme |

Subject: RE: From Max: Mudcat Going Down From: Don Firth Date: 31 May 03 - 03:20 PM There I'll be, like Linus, when his happiness and security blanket is in the laundry. . . . But then, if I'm not composing one of my long dissertations to post on one thread or another, I may actually get some work done on my book. Or get in some practice on the guitar. Or learn a couple of new songs. Or go out and blink in the sunlight. Or. . . . Good luck on the move, Max. And I'll see y'all later. Don Firth |
Subject: RE: From Max: Mudcat Going Down From: artbrooks Date: 31 May 03 - 03:01 PM Like Jerry R., this is a good time for me personally, since I'll be out of town and electronically deprived for the next week. Hope it all goes well, and we'll see you in the ether. |
Subject: RE: From Max: Mudcat Going Down From: GUEST,Jeri Date: 31 May 03 - 02:57 PM Joe, I suspect the temp site will work with www.mudcat.org whenever they put www.mudcat.org ON it. That's what's happening to me - I get sent there (IP starts with 199.239...) but they haven't put stuff on it yet. One thing I remember Max had to do when he moved Mudcat into his apartment was get the place wired, so maybe that's part of the delay. He's also got a whole fambly to move instead of just himself, and maybe he doesn't know people with trucks. |
Subject: RE: From Max: Mudcat Going Down From: Joe Offer Date: 31 May 03 - 02:35 PM Hi, SRS - I'm sure Max could use a little financial aid to assist in moving Mudcat and setting up a temporary site. Mudcat's mailing address is a post office box, so that won't be moving (at least not just now): The Mudcat Café PO Box 3006 West Chester, PA 19381 Max and Jeff are trying to set up a temporary Mudcat Website. I don't know if they will be able to use the usual Mudcat address, www.mudcat.org - or it it will be another one. If there is a temporary address, I'll make sure it gets posted at rec.music.folk. I'm sure Jon Freeman will post information about a temporary Mudcat site, if there is one. Jon runs two sites, http://www.folkinfo.org/, and The Annexe, http://www.jonbanjo.com/forum. You may want to check out rec.music.folk while Mudcat is down. Go to www.google.com and select "groups." Then enter rec.music.folk. To post, you have to register with Google. Oh, and I doubt that it will take Max ten days to move himself and his family - but it will take at least that much time to set Mudcat up in a new location, with a new Internet line and all that. Think about the challenge of moving Mudcat, PLUS all the effort and time it takes to move a family. I hope it all goes smoothly, Max. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: From Max: Mudcat Going Down From: Barbara Date: 31 May 03 - 02:06 PM Ah, Max, good of you to worry about us in the middle of your chaos. Take your time, and do it right, meatspace family first, and then us, the rest of your huge, fractious, difficult and endearing family. Hope you have a good, solid, long-term place to go to this time. In the words of Guy Clark: "Pack up all the dirty dishes, Make a note of all good wishes, Say goodbye to the landlord for me, Sons a bitches always bore me.." (from L.A.Freeway) Blessings, Barbara |

Subject: RE: From Max: Mudcat Going Down From: GUEST,Jon Date: 31 May 03 - 12:27 PM Jenny, you don't need to (and please don't) re-register but you would need to log on there. One thing to note is that the Annexe shares the cookie with the "emergency folkinfo site". This could have an impact for example to anyone who uses the Annexe and Folkinfo but has a different username or password on each site. At the moment, the main folkinfo site seems to be doing OK and I'd prefer it, except when it is impossible to get to folkinfo that people use that one - jonbanjo.com/The Annexe is a much smaller site - a £50 per year cf £200 a year site... Any problems, email me at jon@folkinfo.org and I'll try to sort out ASAP. |
Subject: RE: From Max: Mudcat Going Down From: Geoff the Duck Date: 31 May 03 - 12:10 PM Of Course, if you get major withdrawal symptoms, there is always the WAYBACK MACHINE... For those who haven't already been there, you can find old versions of Mudcat archived for posterity. You can get to old Mudcat by following this link http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.mudcat.org. It may not be the same as a real-time argument with Catspaw, but a lot better than a visit to the NYCFTTS. See you all online when we return!# Quack! Geoff the Duck. |

Subject: RE: From Max: Mudcat Going Down From: JennyO Date: 31 May 03 - 11:58 AM Good grief. I might have to get a LIFE! Well, at least I'll get some sleep. Actually, for the last four days of the ten, I'll be at a folk festival, and Mudcat should just be coming back on about the time I get back. Nice timing! Jon, I had a look at your alternative site, and noticed I'm a guest.Do I have to register all over as a new member to get my name up there? Anyway, good luck with the move, Max. You'll have to sing some of the moving shanties on the Moving thread! Jenny |

Subject: RE: From Max: Mudcat Going Down From: Stilly River Sage Date: 31 May 03 - 11:45 AM Maybe I need to take a page from Max's book (and Mark's song!) and do a little packing up around here while the 'Cat is down. It might only move clutter to boxes, then to shelves or closets, but a little late spring cleaning wouldn't be amiss. A question: if this move is taking 10 days, is travel of some distance implied, or just waiting for the new place to become available? Will the mailing address change? I know Max said he didn't have time for details, but if this would be a good time to send along a smallish check to help, is the address we've been using the best place to send it? SRS |

Subject: RE: From Max: Mudcat Going Down From: GUEST Date: 31 May 03 - 11:12 AM Is this the reason why I couldn't reach the mudcat by clicking on my bookmark? So why than could I make it by using altavista supersearch? Anyway it worked and now I know*sniff*
All my best wishes for your move, just take it slowly, don't hurry with the mudcat.... ok..a little bit...I'm shure we'll all survive, hm, at least the most of us. All my best wishes to you and your family - hope you'll soon get warm in your new surrounding. menzze |

Subject: RE: From Max: Mudcat Going Down From: GUEST,Jon Date: 31 May 03 - 06:18 AM Good luck with the move and McGrath, thanks for the mention. Just a short note re. folkinfo. The server it runs on has had periods of trouble lately. I'm pretty sure it's nothing to do with my code (more likely someone else on the same server - eg. on the "Annexe server", we had some genius managing to keep 12 active db connections per page open - it killed us) and I'm only using fractions of my 500MB/ 7GB disk/bandwith limits but I'm not sure what would happen if I got much extra traffic. As a just in case, and for emergencies only, Pip allows me to use a "backdoor" at http://www.jonbanjo.com/folkinfo/. I can't provide everything from there but at least the fourm and song database work - no tunes though. |
Subject: RE: From Max: Mudcat Going Down From: MudGuard Date: 31 May 03 - 05:56 AM Max, thanks for the warning. And I hope everything (not only the Mudcat) will survive the move! Good Luck!
