Money for? We're self financed, meaning I pay for everything. $250 for connectivity, $100 per month in electricity, and at least $500 associated with the move of Mudcat alone. Hardware costs, software costs, so on and so on. Sorry it its not clear that we just always need money, or if I was short, but I didn't have much time.

Sorcha - try deleting all your temporary internet files before logging in, and if that doesn't work, download and use a different browser THEN try to log in with your usual one.

Sorcha, there is 1 big drawback with the type of chat I set up and I would guess that is why its not used here. There are compatibily issues, e.g. Web TV's don't support Java, it can be harder for people behind firewalls to use, etc.

I'm not a fan of chats that use a HTTP (web) server and rely on the browser refreshing but you can guarantee that just about everyone will be able to use them. I would imagine that is why this type has been chosen for Mudcat.

A question though --

I didn't realize we were back online until I checked the trouble forum and found that taj was running. When I try to get in on www.mudcat.org, I still get the cryptic message that the Cat is down.
Will this be fixed, or is taj the only way to get in?

Giac, I think IP numbers were changed for the temp part of the move. It can take 48 and maybe even more hrs for the information needed to convert names like www.mudcat.org into the IP address (DNS) to filter through the system.

At the shanty sing/pub sing in Wheaton, Maryland USA (FSGW monthly event) Tuesday night, an announcement was made that Mudcat was down and a plea for money along with the mailing address were given out. It was noted that the "loss" of Mudcat would be a severe one for the folk world. And those of us for whom it's become a real home would most definately concur!

Go, MAX! You remain an amazing and incredibly dedicated crazy person and we love you for it. Thanks for keeping the dream alive. The Czeck is in the male...

When I last posted - not that many minutes back, I didn't have a cookie and the site wouldn't let me log on.
Now I have returned my identity is back to normal (if you can ever describe my identity as that). I didn't need to log on - my personal page just returned of its own accord! Is the mudcat like Little Bo Peep's sheep - leave it alone and it comes home, but its tail follows later?

Although I haven't posted in a while, I missed Mudcat when it was down. I've put one of my CD's up for auction and 100% of the proceeds go to Mudcat. I have contributed directly in the past but personal finances are rather tight right now. Hope that helps with the financial side of it.

After logging in, and landing at the page

Has the IP# in the url line, where as all the other URLs on the page (Lyrics & Knkowledge, "You ahve 4 Messages" and such) all point to www.mudcat.org... and clicking them either brings up the error message

Joe .... I am having the same problems as Clinton .... It won't let me reset my cookie but then I seem to remember never having had a cookie when I joined Mudcat this way.
I certainly was never able to access mudchat when I came in through the numbers so the problem may be solved when we can come in through the front door again.

I can get in using taj but then have to change ww to taj every time I follow a link. This works for just about everything except the door of the chatroom. I can get to the login page and see there are 3 people in there but I can't get through them doors!!!!!

Max said, in FolkInfo, that the address would take a while to propagate through the system. Www.mudcat.org was at another address during the move - where the "we're down - send money" message still is. Eventually the correct address will work its way through the internet to you - you just have to wait. Until then, looks like the Taj address is the best way to go if you want a cookie.

Cookies don't work with numbers. Not sure why, but I think it's in the way the cookies are written and what Mudcat looks for when it accesses them.

I cannot believe what an empty feeling I experienced when I clicked onto the 'cat and it was gone! And I got the "funding" message. And even though it said it's be back on the 10th, I kept checking each day to feed my denial and here its back! And money wasn't the issue (any more than usual).

Although a rare poster anymore, it certainly made me appreciate the resource and ability to pop in, check out the music threads, learn stuff and pop back out.

It made me sad to think this was a financial outage and I did nothing to help.

I know in the past, we've had financial issues and the community has come through. But is occurs to me, perhaps a more constant reminder of the need for donations to keep this thing running. How would it be if there was a simple note at the top where we could be reminded each day of the not-for-profit nature of this forum and the need to feed it? I know that wouls be helpful to me.

Max, I hope your move was blessedly uneventful.

Things seem to be running smoothly now so hopefully others will be able to get cookies sorted and meet up in the chatroom again. Last night I could only get in through Geoff's browser but all are working now and I've sorted the e mail Tig (well Geoff did) and it did just seem to be the size of the file that caused it - so you see size does matter;¬))
