Subject: RE: Concert Hall Named in Art Thieme's honor-6 June! From: katlaughing Date: 05 Jun 03 - 12:38 PM Oh, I should have said to click on "Concerts" when you get there. However, I'll just paste the concert info and blurb here, so ya don't have to go looking for it. This is really wonderful! From World Folk Music Company: Friday Evening June 6th 7:30 p.m. Art Thieme is one of the most prominent figures in American Folk music today. In 1997 Art was diagnosed with MS which eventually forced him to retire from performing. When we began our concert series Art was the first act to grace our stage and for a good reason. His show was one of the most engaging and entertaining in the business, and if Thieme played our room everyone would want to. Not only is Art one of the most important song collectors and story tellers of our time he has penned some great tunes and told some great lies as well. He has influenced countless numbers of singers and entertainers offering assistance and guidance throughout his career. So when it was suggested it would be a good idea to name our concert hall he came instantly to mind. Other names were suggested because that's what you do when you go about naming a concert hall. But, there was never a serious second choice. So Art Thieme Hall it shall be. To help us celebrate Art and steal his songs and puns will be a real nice list of performers who will include: Michael Smith, Barbara Barrow, Ed Holstein, Eric Lugosch, Michael Miles, Tricia Alexander, Rick Neeley and Chris McNamara, Anna Stange, Dyed In The Wool And more... All proceeds to Art. Tickets $20.00 |

Subject: RE: Concert Hall Named in Art Thieme's honor-6 June! From: Art Thieme Date: 07 Jun 03 - 09:01 PM Friends, it was just a fine night !!! It startewd with Chris and I driving in to Chi and getting lost three times on highways we both know pretty well. Then the ongoing construction on I-57 did us in. The exit for 111th street was shut down---son we had to try the next exit. Somehow we went south on I-55 and were half way to St. Louis before we both realized it. ---------- This is what comes of a father and son getting together in an auto for the always mesmerizing conversation that has been on hold, maybe, since the last time we went on a trip together. I guess you might say it was quality time----but it completely distracted us from the task (trip) at hand. Well, we DID finally get to our destination---the World Folk Music Company on Chicago's south side. The room now named for me was full. Wonderful songs were sung by Ed Holstein, Anna Stang, Fred Campeau, Jim Craig, Rick Neely, Chris McNamara, Eric Lugosch (an amazing fingerpicker)----and finally Tom Dundee closed out the evening. Chris got me home by 3:00 AM---and then he had to head home to drive Shannon to Rockford, Illinois for a final exam. I do suspect they are home by now---and asleep. Chloe Moon Thieme, our grandaughter, stayed home with Carol while I was reveling in all those good wishes, vibes and pre-humous accolades. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and huge thanks go out from old Art to ALL the great folks who put this together. John Devens is de man at the World Folk Music Company. It reminds me of the Old Town School Of Folk Music -- circa 1960. The room feels intimate and rather small---about 115 or so pretty much fills it. And it feels just the way I used to like the best rooms I worked in to feel. Naturally, I thanked John Devens and everyone connected to the place, but if you missed my saying those things, consider yourselves told. Strange, when I walked into our apartment on arriving home, my head had to be squeezed through that space I had easily passed within only a few hours earlier. But no matter, tonight it seems to be smaller again. Just as well. Very few here know anything about that other life I once lived. Here in cyberspace, though, we're keeping the old songs alive. I may not be able to walk the walk, but we sure do talk the talk here. Thanks to you all !!! Art |

Subject: RE: Concert Hall Named in Art Thieme's honor-6 Jun From: georgeward Date: 08 Jun 03 - 02:11 PM As much as I honor donors (and, believe me, I do), it sure is nice to see venues named for the artists whose lifework justifies their existence. 'Specially this one. Congratulations, Art! And thanks to World Folk Music Company for the choice and the example. And ain't it grand that the 'cat was back up in time for us to join a virtual celebration! Thanks to Max, too. |
