It's official..the date of this year's Sunnycamp will be October 3, 4 and 5 2003. It will be at the same location in Nahcotta, Washington (USA)on the Long Beach Peninsula. It is a smaller camp than many..last year we had 25 people and I think this year it will be around 50..and that is probably around the upper limit. It is just an old camp, and cabins are unheated. The main lodge/dining/kitchen building is heated with fireplace...but it stays pretty warm. There is a motel right nearby for those who don't like too much togetherness etc...Food will be omniverous, with hopefully, if salmon are running, a nice salmon dinner like last year. Workshops will be in the main lodge, an unheated boathouse, or a little tiny tea house (or unheated cabins).

The scenery there is just beautiful..it is right on Willapa Bay by the Port..very historic area of Washington where the oystering takes place..you will see oyster boats, oyster processing plants etc...There is a famous restaurant, the ARK, right next to it if you don't like our camp food (which should be reasonably good).

Cost is going to be $50 at first but then I might just raise the price later..all depends...so register early..doesn't have to be this early but mid-August or so, if you want the cheaper rate.

We had a great time last year and hope to again this year.

Whatever you and other honored attendees come up with....plus probably a couple of standards...I think some emphasis on local stuff such as Jon Pfaff has been assembling at Folklife etc.

sounds good to me..the early bird catches the worm!!!

Plus we are going to buy a steam cleaner...a steam buggy in fact..the kitchen is not spotless...I personally didn't find it bad but a good steaming won't hurt it...

First of all, where do you live? There is an excellent camp in Mission, B.C. put on by the Vancouver Folk Song Society later this month...I probably can't make it but wish I could.

There are a number of these camps in the PNW (USA).....they tend to follow a similar pattern...arrive Friday afternoon to set up, or Friday evening after work. There is usually a potluck, sometimes all chocolate dessert and sometimes all tremendously healthy stuff. There is usually a large song circle then, sometimes way way late. Saturday morning would be breakfast, usually uncommonly early it seems to me, either put on by campers who sign up for chores, or some camps have a paid cook (Sunnycamp probably won't). Then there are usually workshops in the morning..maybe 2 sets of them..some are set up in advance and some just arise....lunch..time for walks etc.., then another set of workshops in the evenings. Then there is often a concert followed by a dance. It depends on the size and how many buildings you have. People usually break off into smaller groups it seems on Saturday after the concert/dance. Sunday is breakfast, followed by a workshop or two, cleanup, usually lunch, and then more cleanup and farewells.

We'll pretty much be following that pattern...Food is often pretty good..standard breakfast stuff, soup and sandwiches, or tacos, etc. for lunch. Usually a pretty nice dinner. Sunday lunch tends to be leftovers. Camps with a cook have fewer chores to assign, and most camps will offer free attendance in exchange for cleanup chores.

So I hope you can make it. If you have more time than money, you can make it from Seattle by public transport really cheaply if you can find buses to get to Olympia by 9 or so..then you take the Olympia to Aberdeen bus and from Aberdeen you take Pacific Transit all the way. Going back you would have to leave on Monday though.
Some of the camps might have 80 to 100 people...Rainycamp in February near Monroe WA has that many. Sunnycamp will be smaller because (a) we aren't near large folk groups and (b) the camp itself is small...so it's a lot more informal and cozy...overlooks the oysterbeds of Willapa Bay.

Thank you for your reply. I would like to attend. I like the fall dates as I work weekends all summer. I have been playing mandolin for about three months. I don't think I have much talent but I have a lot of enthusiasm. I started late I'm almost fifty but better late than never. Who would I contact and how; to register.

I really am only putting the word out now, rather than September 31, because unlike me, who doesn't need advance notice (some people say get a life) lots of people like rather a lot of notice because they ..just do...and there are a lot of conflicts I know with other things ...both Portland and Seattle have conflicts with either of the dates that were possible..I forget which was which..and I am tied up the second week of October with a camp for girls in difficult circumstances (and any women who are interested in volunteering please b.c. me) and thought it would be easier to have SC all over and done with before the other camp.

But you need absolutely no talent, beauty, social skills etc. to come...a mania for scrubbing kitchens and/or bathrooms would be an asset though. Oh...I called about Steam Buggy and they are sold out...I'll keep looking though...mg

what a great idea...I think it is 3.5 hours from Seattle about..going the back way through Olympia, Montesano, Raymond..a bit longer but easier drive to Longview/Astoria....

Renting a van would be a great idea...share the driving...it is really a beautiful place...the physical structure of the camp is ok but a bit funky...not bad, not beautiful..but it is right on the bay and you can watch the oyster boats..that is after you have watched the cranberry fields get flooded for harvesting and perhaps caught a few salmon for dinner....

so add I guess 2.5 hours B.C. to Seattle..asssuming a straight shot through the border...and have a nice lunch somewhere and be back on the road...

NO NOT SAME PLACE AS 2003. Nearby but on the bay rather than the ocean. In nahcotta, not ocean park.
