Hi, Richard - I visited the page successfully on 27 September, so I'm guessing/hoping that it's only a temporary outage. It has been a bad day for the Internet.

I've just tried to access https://www.linnrecords.com/ and I get
"502 ERROR
The request could not be satisfied.
CloudFront wasn't able to connect to the origin. (etc)"

Anyone know anything about that?

Wow! That’s a useful list, Joe! I have the whole set, but finding a specific song in a hurry can be tricky, so this will definitely help!

As an aside to this Fred Freeman went on to produce the Complete Works of Robert Tannahill, another of Scotland’s fine poets/songwriters. This comes in 4 volumes and is available from various sources including Brechin-all-records.com. Some of the same singers involved as in the Burns albums (though sadly we have lost a good number of those who recorded the Burns songs.)

Thanks for the Discography link!

Does anyone know the BETTY SANDERS Lp recording on RIVERSIDE ??
That was my first encounter with some of these songs. I still
greatly enjoy her interpretations.

Also the Ewan MacColl Dionysus album.

Cheers, Thomas.

Still my favourite album of Burns songs - The Merry Muses of Caledonia' by Ewan MacColl, issued by Dionysus Records some time in the 1960s.
I believe Ken Goldstein set up the company, presumably so such salacious material wouldn't fall into the wrong hands, is was marked something like, "only to be sold to the serious student"!
Beautifully sensitive singing, miles ahead of much of the "nudge, nudge, know what I mean?" stuff that was doing the rounds at the time.
Jim Carroll

Wha'll Mow Me Nou?
O, I hae tint my rosy cheek,
Likewice my waste sae sma';
O wae gae by the sodger lown,
The sodger did it a'.

O wha'll mowe me nou, my jo,
An wha'll mowe me nou:
A sodger wi his bandileers
Haes banged my belly fou.

Nou I maun thole the scornfu sneer
O mony a saucy quine;
When, curse upon her godly face!
Her cunt's as merry's mine.

Oor dame hauds up her wanton tail,
As due as she gaes lie;
An she misca's a young thing,
The trade if she but try.

Oor dame can lae her ain guidman,
An mowe for glutton greed;
An yet misca' a puir thing,
That's mowin for its breid.

Alake! sac sweet a tree as love,
Sic bitter fruit should bear!
Alake, that e'er a merry erse,
Should draw a sauty teir.

But deevil damn the lousy loon,
Denies the bairn he got!
Or lea's the merry erse he loe'd,
To wier a ragged coat!

Joe, Linn Records still sells all volumes on CD and in three different digital download formats.

And, by the way, do you know Thomas Keith's Discography of Robert Burns 1948 to 2002?

I wasn't particularly interested in Robert Burns when this collection came out in 2003, but I've gradually come to love his songs - especially after I visited Scotland in 2013. But by then, this collection was out of print and available only for outrageous prices.

I happened to come across the collection at emusic today, and at least part of it is now available for MP3 download. I got volumes 1, 2, 8, 9. 10, 11, and 12. I see that some volumes are also available at Amazon as MP3 or CD. I hope they reissue all 12 volumes.

In fact, one might say that Reader's album is nicely timed to compete with this box, as the box release has been planned since volume 1 came out seven years ago!

You can order it from Linn, or from CAMSCO. CaAMSCO is considerably less expensive. The 800/548-FOLK (3655) number works in th US and Canada; if it doesn't, you can call 203/531-3355. Or send an EMail to dick@camsco.com

Or send me a PM here at Mudcat

I think the timing clash is accidental, as Fred Freeman started recording and releasing this series in 1996. The last volume came out at the end of last year, and the set is now released in a box.
What I would like to see is a book of Fred's settings with notes.

Eddi's album is linked to her performance at a Burns Festival in Ayrshire earlier this year. I remember her performing in the folk clubs around Ayrshire in the late 70s and early 80's along with Dave Dick as Pigmeat, singing blues and folk. (She was Edwena then).
Folk songs,(including Burns),even turned up as bonus tracks on the Fairground Attraction 12" singles.

Well, you know, I would like to own both the Eddi Reader and ALL the Kompleat Burns CD's AND all the Jean Redpaths as well, oh yeah and Dick Gaughan does a fab version of "When Westlin Winds" - (now theres poetry and music for you, it breaks your heart,) - but where does it end ? And who can afford to buy all this ? If only Rab could have collected the royalties that have accrued after his death: books, readings, TV, T-shirts, CD's, radio, kilts, shortbread, etc. For 200 years a lot of people have got rich buying into his genius, but you know, he had vision that guy and part of his gift to us is that he is always open to to re-interpretation -andd his work is big enough to handle it.

Yea, pity about that, but Eddi Reader is a brilliant, fresh, feministic interpreter of Burns (nothing too overt, but at the back, or maybe even near the front, of her own mind). Carol Laula ain't bad either! I have Eddi on video singing "Auld Lang Syne" and it's like no other version you've ever heard. Not for the traditionalists! Same goes for Carol doing "My Tocher's the Jewel", spine tingling! Thanks for bringing the E.R. album to attention.

I'll second Dick's recommendation. It's an amazing achievement. Also, as an added incentive, Volume 11 is actually a double CD, so it's 13 CDs for the price of 12...

You can check out the individual tracks at Linn Records website. I don't have the URL offhand, but it's a quick google!

I'd been hoping to acquire this set. How would one go about ordering it here in Canada?

My favourite track is Bobby Eaglesham's version of "Raving Winds" on volume 7: also saw Bobby doing it live at a Burns' Night about 3 years ago: a thing of great beauty (the performance, not Bobby!).

For Burns fans everywhere (and for those who've found Burn's songs recordings too "arty"), Linn Records has released a superb set of 12 CDs of the Complete Songs of Robert Burns, performed by an all star cast of Scottish singers. The presentations are "folk" rather than concert hall, and when done by the likes of Tony Cuffe, Christine Kydd, Ian Bruce, Gordeanna McCulloch, Rod Paterson, Janet Russell, Alan Reid, Billy Ross, Sandy Brechin, Tony McManus, Ed Miller, Pete Clark....and many, many others. It's a huge cast, and they sing and play with skill, knowledge and enthusiasm
   CAMSCO is proud to offer them for $120 the set (individual CDs are available on special order.)A good price for some magnificent recordings!
