Subject: Lyr Req: & Tune ID: Whittle/McGranahan Hymn
From: Haruo

Sunday morning at Japanese Baptist, we sang a song in the Nichigo service, #506 in the 1954 Sambika hymnal, that purports to be a translation of a hymn that starts "For God so loved! O wondrous thought" by Daniel Webster Whittle, to a tune called GLORY TO GOD ascribed to James McGranahan. Both Whittle and McGranahan are well-known late-19th-century American hymnists, but The Cyber Hymnal (with its 4100+ hymns) and Google (with its billion-and-one webpages) are at a loss to supply me with the text in English.

Anybody have it?

FWIW I've scanned the hymn from the Sambika and posted it so maybe somebody can recognize it and say, "Oh, yeah, that's blah-buh-dee-blah..."! Taenaru ai kana.

Haruo: try "for God so loved o wonderful thought"(not "wondrous"). My cabletv internet is not working properly and I couldnt get into the site, but a search for this phrase with yahoo took me to what you are looking for, I'm sure the text is in there somewhere.

The English title in Sanbika is incorrect. The first line should be: "'For God so loved!' Oh, wondrous theme!" Google search by "for God so loved o wonderful thought" leads to this midi page of Japanese hymns (also No. 506), the title being doubly incorrect. I can find this hymn in Sankey, McGranaham and Stebbins' Gospel Hymns Nos. 1 to 6 Complete (Biglow & Main, 1895, No. 329); and also in their Gospel Hymns Nos. 5 and 6 Combined (Biglow & Main, 1892, No. 63). The author's name given is El. Nathan (Whittle's pen name)

       GLORY TO GOD THE FATHER
      (El. Nathan / James McGranahan)

1. "For God so loved!" Oh, wondrous theme!
      Oh! wondrous key to wondrous scheme!
      A Saviour sent to sinful men
      Glory to God the Father!

    CHORUS:
    Glory to God the Father!
    Glory to God the Father!
    Glory, Glory,
    Glory to God the Father!

2. In love God gave, in love Christ came,
      That man might know the Father's name,
      And in the Son salvation claim
      Glory to God the Father!

3. As man He tarried here below
      The pow'r and love of God to show;
      To help and heal all human woe
      Glory to God the Father!

4. Upon the cross His life He gave,
      His people from their sins to save;
      For them descended to the grave
      Glory to God the Father!

5. By God exalted from the dead,
      He reigns on high the living head
      Of ev'ry soul for whom He bled
      Glory to God the Father!

"Glory to God the Father" is on the list at The Hymns of Daniel W. Whittle.

BTW Greg, the link you provided is to a MIDI of the tune, and the "wonderful" is a typo for "wondrous". Thanks, though, I'll listen to it.

Haruo,

Have you put your head around the door on this thread of Masato's?

English (?) Song ID Req: Ryohaku

At this stage we are investigating hymn tunes as a possible source, so you may be able to help.
