Bruce Whiteside, Gold Coast, Australia. For some strange reason I burst out singing this song recently, that just came out the blue. I'm 80 and in the late 1940's I recall Napier closing down at 10.30pm with it. In those day I lived in Whakatane. They also closed down on Sunday nights with a piece of music that haunted me for years. When I was old enough I wrote to the station and found out it was called Dancing to Heaven with you. Someone mentioned 3ZB. Remember Gracie and Jacko (Grace Green and Jack Maybury); they did the kids programme. Wonderful days beautiful memories

...Thank you Jim Dixon,    I live in Melbourne,   but was born in Palmerston North and I left there in 1968. I well remember that song being played every night at the close down of the Radio Station. It was only a couple of weeks ago that I was telling folk over here about it, but of course could not remember all the words.    Tonight I typed in the phrase and up came the song.   Thanks again.    IAN DRINKWATER

"dibs" or "dibbs" is a slang term with several meanings - the oldest of which, I think, is "money". (The more common sense is "first choice", I reckon). Partridge's slang dictionary has it.

Thanks to Max Cryer, who conveyed the necessary information to me via Gordon McLauchlan and George Andrews, I have been able to locate and purchase this Radio NZ "sign off" song. Its called "Goodnight, Everyone" by Henry Hall and his BBC Orchestra and it can be heard on U-tube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3Ri1KVLZJE
Max advised that Billy T James and the Radio Times Cast recorded a version of this song in 1981 and its on an EMI Music NZ CD (2004) called "Don Linden Presents - My Kind of Music" (track 24) which I have now purchased from Marbecks for $25. The Billy T version is remarkably close in Vaudeville sound to the original Henry Hall version. See Marbecks link below for this CD. Cheers Colin Taylor

I've been trying to track down this song for years! When I was a kid in Melbourne in the 1950s,it was sometimes played in the late afternoon on 3KZ.

I know this song. Somewhere my parents have it (a bit gargled) on open reel tape. I love it but have never been able to track down a copy.

Another verse goes:

I am 99% sure that the policeman verse went:

Goodnight to all the policemen, as on the beat they creep,
We hope you find a cosy spot in which to have a sleep

One day I hope to get hold of a good recording of this - or at least my parents reception-affected one. I have the worlds copied out somewhere if only I could find them :(

I acquired a wireless after some time. A Gulbransen or Philipps and modified it to take my earphones and to switch off the main speaker so as not to disturb the others. Many a time I woke with the earphones around my head.

Yes Robyn. I am from ChCh. I spent many hours of my youth listening to my home made crystal set after everyone else went to bed. I was hooked on "Richard Diamond" private detective serieswhich came on about 10pm. I also listened to Radio Hilversum and AAFRTS (American Armed Forces Radio Transmission Services) Which I think emanated from The Philippines at that time or maybe Guam. There really was not much to listen to after 12 with the NZBC.

Do any Madcutters remember "Goodnight Everyone"? In the 50's it was the close-off song for one of our NZ wireless stations.
