Gee, do we know any Mudcatters worth visiting in Maine? Hmmm. I just can't think of anyone. Oh well. I'm going to be in Belfast Maine next week. Am I within spitting distance of anything cool?

Doug Coffin, slate carver and cartoonist, is in Belfast, but he's not a Mudcatter. (Just the inspiration for one -- moi.)

Belfast is -- hey, how far up the coast (Rte. 1) from Bath/Brunswick? Winterbright -- anything going on other than on the weekend?

And, again heading down the coast, is Portland -- and in the general vicinity is Sinsull, Kendall, Charley Noble, Brîan, Uncle Jaque, who am I forgetting?

Hey, Max, if you are around on Friday, we (Curmudgeon & me) hold down the session at The Press Room in Portsmouth, NH -- just across the Piscataqua from Maine -- starting around 4 and lasting until 9 p.m. Jeri will be there, fiddle in hand, and maybe NH Dave who mostly listens.

Is there a chance we might get to meet?

Linn

Max-

You miss our 3rd friday coffeehouse in Brunswick by one day. This is a real shame because there are some fine blues people involved with this coffeehouse, and one of my old Michigan friends is joining us for the open mike portion. Maybe you can give us more lead-time next year. We do aim to please, given more notice.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Jeri's gonna be at Old Songs starting on the 27th. Charley, Max didn't say what dates he was gonna be up there. Maybe he CAN make it!?

Max, depending on when you go back, maybe I can meet you somewhere on the NYS Thruway. I'm probably heading back on the 29th or 30th.

Just across the bridge from Belfast is Searsport, which has a lovely maritime museum, if you're into that sort of thing. About an hour away is the Bath Maritime Museum.

Belfast is a nice little town. There's a great health food store there, if you are into alternative foods. They even have a deli and take-out.

I'm pretty sure Barry, who at least lives in the U.S., is gonna be at Old Songs too.

Max, you ought to just go to Old Songs, if just for one day, because a gazillion catters will be there, and there will be great music and lots of it at almost all hours. Not to mention that I and others would probably love the chance to see Emily (again) and meet the kid(s) if they're coming!

There is a Summer Solstice Night on in Rockland (very near Belfast) on the 21st Max. Music ect. A Street event.
If you are feeling energetic, on Monday's at the American Legion Hall in Belfast they have Scottish Country Dances and you may be of nibble footing and already know your Strathspey's from your Reels:>) but it might be a fun thing to do either way! Novice or Expert.
If the notion to head North hits you, you would be most Welcome here in the Backwoods, Im near to Fort Kent, just say the word, our door is open:>)
I hope you have Fun no matter what you do.

Mount Desert Island is a fairly easy drive from Belfast, and well worth the time spent there if you've got a day or two available for exploring.

I'll be at the Hudson River Revival this weekend & I'll be at Old Songs the following weekend with family in tow. Sorry I won't see you this far north Max but hopefully I'll see down south in Oct at the Getaway?

OK, I think I'm going to leave Belfast on the 27th and head South. I'll try to run into anyone that'll have me. I figure I'll stop everywhere on the way down to get to Boston just in time for bed. I'll probably stay with a Friend in Boston Friday night. Then perhaps I'll drive to Old Songs Saturday. Then maybe through NE PA on the way to get home by Sunday night. So who can I run into? Who's gonna be at Old Songs? Who's gonna be in the Portland Maine area on Friday, then NH and MA. Where should I go? I have 2 or 3 days to see Mudcatters in New England and no time to plan. Help.

Hey Max.....breathe!!! lol

Not pretending to be your "social secretary" BUT........

Your itinerary:

Leave Belfast and visits in time to arrive in Boston for dinner;

Josh White Jr. is playing at Passim's in Cambridge Friday at 8pm;

Meet Boston area Mudcatters before or after the concert;

Sleep;

Up EARLY Sat. to drive to Old Songs;
ENJOY meeting and playing with lots of New England Mudcatters;
Relax for the day, jam, and soak up Mudcatter's warmth and talents;

Stay overnight at Old Songs (see above);

Leave Sun. after the fog lifts.....bg

If none of the above works, you know you have a standing invitation here.

The 'Cat is BACK!; Whoooo-Peeeee!!! {8^}D~

It seems that your humble correspondent has not been lurking the 'Cat nearly as much as I used to, but we sure do miss it (and some of the rowdys who inhabit it) when it's down!

That data base sure comes in handy, too, when we're looking for the lyrics to some off-the-wall old song that nobody in fashionable circles these days would likely want anything to do with.

I'd love t' meet ye, Max, given the opportunity. Press room gatherings have been kind of problematical what with competing domestic agendae, etc. (our only Daughter is getting married July 19), and our Fife-and-Drum Corps has rehearsal fri. night, but I can try to wheedle "Management" into considering it.

"Aunt Mah'thah" (AKA "RAFG", or "Responsible Adult Female Guardian" is highly allergic to smoke - particulary cigarette smoke, and if anyone is smoking in the building, she will in all likelyhood experience acute dyspnea, if not an asthma attack, and we'll be out of there inside of 15 minutes.
Even on those occasions when I get the urge to fire up my Pappy's old briar with a load of black cavendish, it's OUTDOORS only - usually around the campfire after she's gone to bed.

If you come down I-95, you'll go right through Yarmouth. Somewhere between Exits #17 and 16 give yore ol' "Uncle" a wave, won't ye?

And Godspeed throughout your journey.

Since the Wedding is on the same day as the 3rd Maine Field Musics' big gig at Ft. Knox in Bucksport, I don't suppose it'll hurt much if I miss rehearsal.

Daughter Shearon considered having me fife her down the isle (a "deck", actually, as she is getting married on Moosehead Lake aboard the restored Steamer "Khatadin"), but then thought better of it.

Has someone posted directions from Maine / Rt. 95-South to the Press Room somewhere? I have recieved them several times in the past but forgot where I put 'em.

Should the Angels facilitate our transport to said Press Room, I'll be the fella wearing a cravat on my head. Not too many chaps do that any more - for the past Century or so anyway.

Directions to the Press Room From Points Nawth!

Please be advised to get there between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m. in order to find a seat. The session lasts until around 9 p.m. It's in the back of the room in a usually crowded pub and situated in between the kitchen and the waitresses who are trying valiantly to save everyone from dying of thirst.

The address is 77 Daniel Street and it is located between the Piscataqua River (and the bridge to Maine) and Market Square, the heart of downtown. It's across the street from the Post Office/Federal Building. Daniel St. (which becomes Congress St. which becomes Islington St. in not too many blocks) is one way, as is State St. and Congress St. Parking either involves going around in circles for awhile looking for an available spot or taking a berth at the Parking Garage (3 blocks away). The phone number is 431-5186.

Oh, Daniel St. is Rte 1 south and State St. is Rte 1 north, if that helps clarify anything.

Jeri posted these directions from Yahoo Maps:

Take exit number 7, towards PORTSMOUTH/NEWINGTON. (0.2 miles)
Turn LEFT onto MARKET ST. (0.2 miles)
MARKET ST becomes MARKET ST. 0.7 miles)
You'll come to a stop sign. Right after the stop, turn LEFT onto BOW ST. (0.1 miles)
Turn SLIGHT RIGHT onto CHAPEL ST. (0.1 miles)
Turn RIGHT onto DANIEL ST.

Parking Polka:

Despite our political predilections, 'Mudge and I usually do the right hand turn loop: Daniel St. South, right on Penhallow, right on Bow, right on Chapel, right again on Daniel Street.

OR you can do left hand turns: Daniel St. South, through Market Square, left on the alley between the church and Eagle Photo, through next cross street, left on State St. next to the old Custom House, State St. to just before the bridge to Maine, left over to Daniel St. south and start over again.

Does any of this make sense?

Those of you who have been before will have a better idea.

Hope this turns into the Second Great Mudcat Convergence at the Press Room!!! (See the pictures from the First Great Mudcat Convergence at Events Photos -- Press Room, Portsmouth, NH, Friday, July 27, 2001)

In agreement, one should always say it on the INhale. Hard for non natives to master. It is also a mild insult, like when someone does something stupid, such as, a foreigner trying to talk native.

Just arrived home from The Press Room -- Max picked a great day to show up. Just about everybody was late (arriving a little after 4 instead of about 3:45) due to a massive thunderstorm that had roads flooded (I was coming from work from Hampton in the south and didn't have much in the line of brakes left when I got through one flooded intersection getting into Portsmouth), lightning smashing into Great Bay on both sides of the Sullivan Bridge (that Tom was driving over from work in Dover), most of the traffic lights in Portsmouth were out, so traffic was backed up halfway to Newington, etcet, etcet. Not to mention tree debris, NO visibility and half the water in the world dumped on the windshield.

And, unfortunately, he could only stay until about 5. We were just getting warmed up when he had to get on his way. But he got a meal in, and a break on his drive to Boston, and some tunes and songs and we got to finally meet The Max-ter. He missed Jeri, who was on her way to Old Songs, but he'll prolly see her there, as that was on his itinerary tomorrow.
