Local folk near Hertford

I'm looking for singaround folk venues within striking distance of Hertford. I know of Bennington and Green Tye and Bishops Stortford but have drawn a blank around the rest of the area. I'm interested in traditional folk and tend to specialise in English for the main part. Can anyone give me any other venues outside of Hertford, where there's a singaround on Mondays at the Hertford Club and once a month at the Great Eastern.

Do you know about the 3rd Sunday session at The White Horse Hertford Castle Street (opposite the castle gates)? Closed for July and August but has been going over 15 years. Phone Alan Muhr on 01992 587753 for details. Mostly trad. music and singing.

If you feel like going a little further afield, there's my session at The Rose & Crown, Ashwell on the 1st Monday of the month. Tel. [phone]. We're eclectic (i.e. traditional in the sense that we do everything including The Kinks) but we do a lot of trad. songs too.

Kevin's "Moving Finger" site has a whole lot more, and you should get hold of a copy of Unicorn. Both have quite extensive session listings and there's a whole lot more they don't list.

Herga may not be all that near Hertford, but given the M25 it's not
that far, and we meet on Mondays at The Royal Oak, Peel Road,
Wealdstone, Middx. Herga is renowned as a singers club with strong traditional leanings. We have guests once a month or so but the rest of the time we have singers nights, which, by tradition, we call 'Open Evenings.

Check about the White Horse on third Sundays, because it's likely moved to the Great Eastern now.

My "Moving Finger" site badly needs updating - I'll do it soon as I can.

But there is a fair amount of live music within striking distance.

For venues east of the Stort click here. As Kevin says, there is a lot of live music in the area. I hate to say it but maybe a little too much as some sessions do seem a bit thin.

The White Horse hasn't moved to the Great Eastern, though it hasn't been getting too much support of late ... perhaps it's because somebody's telling people it's moved to the Great Eastern!!!

Sawbridgeworth has two regular sessions - but they tend not to be FITEF - more anything goes -

The Bell (oddly enough in Bell Street) Alt Mondays starting yesterday (23rd June)

George IV - Knight Street / Station road Alt Wednesdays - from next week (2nd July).

All the others are on the EFN page - unless the Eastwick session's taken off (A414 near Harlow) - McGrath will know!

Eastwick First Tuesday of every month in The Lion, Eastwick (just off the A414 on the North edge of Harlow), courtesy of Bill landlord, a largely Irish session with Bob Williams, Derek Brown, and me. Among others.. (And on the third Tuesdays there's a more Old Timey/bluegrass/country session). Very nice pub.

Non stop diddly-diddly is not my scene so I won't be there. Better ask Kevin.

If you want a strong English music (strictly instrumental) session then get a travel card on the 1st Sunday and get down to the Lord Clyde

The Friday sessions in Essex are mostly English and primarily, but not exclusively, instrumental. First Friday is White Hart, Moreton. Second Friday is peripatetic, details will be posted here when available (go to the bottom of the page to be added to the mailing list). Third and fourth are in Writtle and Tollesbury so probably a bit far for you.

The session at Eastwick is only music only when there's no-one who wants to sing. Derek Brown is usually quite keen to have singers english or otherwise - Linda and I have sung there quite a few times.

We have a weekly singaround at Waltham Abbey every Monday with guests once a month. It is a friendly club and quite a few traditional singers attend, It is based at the British Legion, Brooker Road, Waltham Abbey. Essex. Singers musicians and poets all welcome. Thanks for the info Peter - I actually work in the City so wouldn't even need the travel card - however, I don't play an instrument so am looking for venues where I can sing. I might just try that one sometime though. It's nice to get together with like-minded idiots and enjoy something other than the tele!

I'm definitely going to try to get to Eastwick this week, sounds good.

I do go to the Hertford Club on a Monday night, but it has become rather a mix of music and, being a bit of a 'folk fogey' now, I find some of the turns not really up my street. Maybe it's time to look for pastures new occasionally, although I wouldn't like to lose touch with the friends I've made there. That's the problem when things change, isn't it? Waltham Abbey wouldn't be difficult for me - I live virtually on top of the A10!

There was some music in the Lion on Tuesday, I'm glad to say, as I would have felt a complete idiot going out there with a friend to find nothing happening! Had a good time and my non-singing, non driving friend enjoyed it so much that I'm going to have to take her again. (What am I talking about - I want to go again anyway)

Is it a sure thing for Tuesday next?
