Subject: Local folk From: GUEST,Jacqui c Date: 18 Jun 03 - 03:43 PM I'm looking for singaround folk venues within striking distance of Hertford. I know of Bennington and Green Tye and Bishops Stortford but have drawn a blank around the rest of the area. I'm interested in traditional folk and tend to specialise in English for the main part. Can anyone give me any other venues outside of Hertford, where there's a singaround on Mondays at the Hertford Club and once a month at the Great Eastern. |
Subject: RE: Local folk near Hertford From: GUEST,Keith A o Hertford Date: 19 Jun 03 - 03:28 AM Breezy will be cross that I haven't told you about his sessions in St. Albans. Sorry to you both. See you Monday, keith. |
Subject: RE: Local folk near Hertford From: IanC Date: 19 Jun 03 - 05:31 AM jacqui Do you know about the 3rd Sunday session at The White Horse Hertford Castle Street (opposite the castle gates)? Closed for July and August but has been going over 15 years. Phone Alan Muhr on 01992 587753 for details. Mostly trad. music and singing. If you feel like going a little further afield, there's my session at The Rose & Crown, Ashwell on the 1st Monday of the month. Tel. 01462 743091. We're eclectic (i.e. traditional in the sense that we do everything including The Kinks) but we do a lot of trad. songs too. Kevin's "Moving Finger" site has a whole lot more, and you should get hold of a copy of Unicorn. Both have quite extensive session listings and there's a whole lot more they don't list. :-) Ian |
Subject: RE: Local folk near Hertford From: GUEST Date: 19 Jun 03 - 12:20 PM Herga may not be all that near Hertford, but given the M25 it's not that far, and we meet on Mondays at The Royal Oak, Peel Road, Wealdstone, Middx. Herga is renowned as a singers club with strong traditional leanings. We have guests once a month or so but the rest of the time we have singers nights, which, by tradition, we call 'Open Evenings. More details, including a location map/directions are available on our web site www.hergafolk.org or email me at info@hergafolk.org Look forward to seeing you there. |
Subject: RE: Local folk near Hertford From: GUEST,Hovering Bob Date: 19 Jun 03 - 12:25 PM The last posting about Herga Folk Club was from me but my cookie needed re-setting, (I hate unsigned posts) |
Subject: RE: Local folk near Hertford From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 19 Jun 03 - 02:10 PM Check about the White Horse on third Sundays, because it's likely moved to the Great Eastern now. My "Moving Finger" site badly needs updating - I'll do it soon as I can. But there is a fair amount of live music within striking distance. |
Subject: RE: Local folk near Hertford From: GUEST,Peter from Essex Date: 19 Jun 03 - 02:57 PM For venues east of the Stort click here. As Kevin says, there is a lot of live music in the area. I hate to say it but maybe a little too much as some sessions do seem a bit thin. |
Subject: RE: Local folk near Hertford From: Bugsy Date: 19 Jun 03 - 10:32 PM try this link matey. http://www.folkandroots.co.uk/Venues.html Then click on "Hertfordshire". Hope it's of some help, though it's 34 years since I left Hertfordshire to live in Aussie. Cheers Bugsy |
Subject: RE: Local folk near Hertford From: GUEST,Keith A Date: 20 Jun 03 - 03:25 AM No Kevin, the Sunday White Horse session has not moved. (The Monday one did to the Hertford Club in Bull Plain) Keith. |
Subject: RE: Local folk near Hertford From: IanC Date: 20 Jun 03 - 05:47 AM Kevin The White Horse hasn't moved to the Great Eastern, though it hasn't been getting too much support of late ... perhaps it's because somebody's telling people it's moved to the Great Eastern!!! :-) |
Subject: RE: Local folk near Hertford From: Nessie Date: 20 Jun 03 - 07:39 AM St Albans, Comfort Hotel, on Friday nights. Tonight's guest is Harvey Andrews, Mudcatter extraordinaire and a cracking singer/songwriter with at least 35 years under his belt (of songwriting, that is!). Be there or be square |
Subject: RE: Local folk near Hertford From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 20 Jun 03 - 01:05 PM Are you getting all this Jaqui? |
Subject: RE: Local folk near Hertford From: jacqui.c Date: 24 Jun 03 - 03:49 AM Hi Keith, and everyone else who replied Thanks for all the info - I'll be trying to get to some of the venues in the very near future. I came into the folk music rather late but it is addictive, isn't it. |
Subject: RE: Local folk near Hertford From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 24 Jun 03 - 05:16 AM Welcome, new member Jacqui! |
Subject: RE: Local folk near Hertford From: Dave Bryant Date: 24 Jun 03 - 05:58 AM Has something happened to Breezy ? - it's quite remarkable that he hasn't posted to this thread yet - he'll ususually plug his sessions on the weakest pretext. |
Subject: RE: Local folk near Hertford From: My guru always said Date: 24 Jun 03 - 06:08 AM Breezy is OK Dave - his net connection has been down for a while. I'll pass on your concern shall I? :-) |
Subject: RE: Local folk near Hertford From: Doktor Doktor Date: 24 Jun 03 - 06:29 AM Sawbridgeworth has two regular sessions - but they tend not to be FITEF - more anything goes - The Bell (oddly enough in Bell Street) Alt Mondays starting yesterday (23rd June) George IV - Knight Street / Station road Alt Wednesdays - from next week (2nd July). All the others are on the EFN page - unless the Eastwick session's taken off (A414 near Harlow) - McGrath will know! |
Subject: RE: Local folk near Hertford From: Dave Bryant Date: 24 Jun 03 - 10:48 AM Yes Guru, please tell my old mate John that I'm glad he's OK and that if his PC needs repairing that he should insist on a really thorough job - the sort that takes a year or two ! |
Subject: RE: Local folk near Hertford From: My guru always said Date: 24 Jun 03 - 01:53 PM LOL Dave!! Hil |
Subject: RE: Local folk near Hertford From: jacqui.c Date: 27 Jun 03 - 08:22 AM Thanks for the welcome Keith. Now I'll have to find time to visit the site regularly! Haven't had time to get into the EFN page yet - when is the Eastwick session? That would be an easy one for me. Is that all folk as well? |
Subject: RE: Local folk near Hertford From: GUEST,Peter from Essex Date: 27 Jun 03 - 05:01 PM From Kevin's site Eastwick First Tuesday of every month in The Lion, Eastwick (just off the A414 on the North edge of Harlow), courtesy of Bill landlord, a largely Irish session with Bob Williams, Derek Brown, and me. Among others.. (And on the third Tuesdays there's a more Old Timey/bluegrass/country session). Very nice pub. |
Subject: RE: Local folk near Hertford From: jacqui c Date: 27 Jun 03 - 06:27 PM Thanks Peter I might just get there this week, if things go right. Could you put up with some English folk in amongst the Irish? |
Subject: RE: Local folk near Hertford From: GUEST,Peter from Essex Date: 28 Jun 03 - 05:08 AM Non stop diddly-diddly is not my scene so I won't be there. Better ask Kevin. If you want a strong English music (strictly instrumental) session then get a travel card on the 1st Sunday and get down to the Lord Clyde The Friday sessions in Essex are mostly English and primarily, but not exclusively, instrumental. First Friday is White Hart, Moreton. Second Friday is peripatetic, details will be posted here when available (go to the bottom of the page to be added to the mailing list). Third and fourth are in Writtle and Tollesbury so probably a bit far for you. |
Subject: RE: Local folk near Hertford From: Dave Bryant Date: 28 Jun 03 - 05:50 AM Peter/Jaqui, The session at Eastwick is only music only when there's no-one who wants to sing. Derek Brown is usually quite keen to have singers english or otherwise - Linda and I have sung there quite a few times. |
Subject: RE: Local folk near Hertford From: harlowpoet Date: 28 Jun 03 - 08:53 AM We have a weekly singaround at Waltham Abbey every Monday with guests once a month. It is a friendly club and quite a few traditional singers attend, It is based at the British Legion, Brooker Road, Waltham Abbey. Essex. Singers musicians and poets all welcome. Check out our website for more information. www.geocities.com/walthamabbeyfolkclub, or just go in google and key in waltham abbey folk club. |
Subject: RE: Local folk near Hertford From: jacqui c Date: 29 Jun 03 - 03:34 PM Thanks for the info Peter - I actually work in the City so wouldn't even need the travel card - however, I don't play an instrument so am looking for venues where I can sing. I might just try that one sometime though. It's nice to get together with like-minded idiots and enjoy something other than the tele! I'm definitely going to try to get to Eastwick this week, sounds good. I do go to the Hertford Club on a Monday night, but it has become rather a mix of music and, being a bit of a 'folk fogey' now, I find some of the turns not really up my street. Maybe it's time to look for pastures new occasionally, although I wouldn't like to lose touch with the friends I've made there. That's the problem when things change, isn't it? Waltham Abbey wouldn't be difficult for me - I live virtually on top of the A10! |
Subject: RE: Local folk near Hertford From: Dave Bryant Date: 02 Jul 03 - 04:44 AM Harlowpoet - is that Simon ? |
Subject: RE: Local folk near Hertford From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 02 Jul 03 - 05:13 AM The Lion yesterday got pulled, because of holidays and that - but probably next Tuesday (July 8th). |
Subject: RE: Local folk near Hertford From: harlowpoet Date: 02 Jul 03 - 11:50 AM Dave Who else? Get along again sometime. |
Subject: RE: Local folk near Hertford From: jacqui.c Date: 03 Jul 03 - 03:30 AM There was some music in the Lion on Tuesday, I'm glad to say, as I would have felt a complete idiot going out there with a friend to find nothing happening! Had a good time and my non-singing, non driving friend enjoyed it so much that I'm going to have to take her again. (What am I talking about - I want to go again anyway) Is it a sure thing for Tuesday next? |
