Subject: ADDPOP: Flowers on the Wall From: Helen Date: 20 Jun 03 - 11:05 AM Hi pauljay, I did a search on Google.com using this search term, including the double quotes because it is a phrase: "smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo" and I got a lot of hits, like this one. Statler Brothers Flowers On The Wall I keep hearing you're concerned about my happiness But all that thought you're giving me is conscience, I guess If I were walking in your shoes I wouldn't worry none While you and your friends are worrying 'bout me, I'm having lots of fun Counting flowers on the wall That don't bother me at all Playing solitaire till dawn with a deck of 51 Smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo So don't tell me I've nothing to do Last night I dressed in tails pretended I was on the town As long as I can dream it's hard to slow this swinger down So please don't give a thought to me I'm really doing fine You can always find me here and having quite a time Counting flowers on the wall That don't bother me at all Playing solitaire till dawn with a deck of 51 Smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo So don't tell me I've nothing to do It's good to see you, I must go, I know I look a fright Anyway my eyes are not accustomed to this light And my shoes are not accustomed to this hard concrete So I must go back to my room and make my day complete Counting flowers on the wall That don't bother me at all Playing solitaire till dawn with a deck of 51 Smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo So don't tell me I've nothing to do http://www.thesonglyrics.com/s_song_lyrics/statlerbrothers_lyric1.html Helen For the record, words and music were by Lewis DeWitt, 1965. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: smokin cigaretts and watching Capt. K From: Helen Date: 20 Jun 03 - 06:55 PM Thanks, Joe. It was 3am & I couldn't sleep but should have been asleep so I only looked at the first site which came up. pauljay, it's surprising the difference in the search results with or without the double quotes. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Flowers on the Wall (Statler Brothers) From: GUEST,keberoxu Date: 26 Apr 20 - 12:08 PM I remember this hit record ... which dates me, I know. I remember the banjo that comes twanging in on the words "Counting Flowers On the Wall ..." and the bass voice that hits the downbeat, in front of the other voices' backbeat, with the single "KANG!" of "Kangaroo." That bass voice belonged to the founding Statler Brother named Harold Reid, and he has just died after a long illness. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Flowers on the Wall (Statler Brothers) From: clueless don Date: 27 Apr 20 - 07:33 AM In Helen's 20 Jun 03 - 11:05 AM posting of the lyrics, the second line is given as "But all that thought you're giving me is conscience, I guess" I'm not saying those aren't the words as written, and I'm not necessarily saying that that isn't what the Statler Brothers sang. But I distinctly remember the line as "But all that thought you're giving me is nonsense, I guess" Don |
