Subject: Lyr Req: Days of my childhood ways From: GUEST,Adam Date: 22 Jun 03 - 06:39 PM I am wanting to flesh out my memory a song containing the following refrain If I could only find my way back to the days of my childhood ways One verse begins: My mother, so pretty, her hair not half so white I have no reference - (I heard someone sing it years ago and it stuck in my head) Any help would be appreciated. -Adam |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Days of my childhood ways From: Jim Dixon Date: 23 Jun 03 - 08:42 PM Refresh. (I'm not sure, but I think weekends may be a bad time to ask for lyrics. Maybe more people will see this request if we give them a second chance.) |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Days of my childhood ways From: GUEST,Dale Date: 23 Jun 03 - 11:13 PM I've got it ~~ two versions, actually. Years ago I heard it by Doc Watson who said he learned it from an old 78 recording by Alfred G. Karnes. Years went by, and I kept looking for the Karnes version. Finally bought it last year, it's on Kentucky Gospel, Document 8013. I just dug out Doc's version. It's on Home Again! Vanguard VRS 9239 I'll get to work on them tonight, it's a favorite of mine. |
Subject: Lyr Add: CHILDHOOD PLAY (from Doc Watson) From: GUEST,Dale Date: 23 Jun 03 - 11:42 PM First, I did NOT hit the submit. It did it by itself. Another ghostly thing just like the self-starting CD player, I think. Someday the machines will take over. Here is Doc's version. I'll get right to the source version next to determine what differences there may be. From the notes: Alfred Karnes, a powerful singer from Corbin, eastern Kentucky, made a commercial record of this in the '30s. Doc Watson learnt it off the record. It's a reflection of the vain nostalgia that seems to haunt so many hillbilly singers whose minds turn to a Never-never land of golden childhood, school-house on hilltop, meadow in bloom, bird-song in the willows; a land untroubled by guilt and remorse. Some smile, others weep at such sentimental pieces; but they're all part of the scene. Childhood Play as sung by Doc Watson 1967 Could I only find the way back to the yesterdays To the golden days of my childhood play My life would be different, my enemies would be friends My leisures not wasted nor my life so full of sins. If I could only find the way back to the days of my childhood play Could I only find those days as they were then The golden days to live all over again My paths would not be empty, I'd make a mark in light My mother so happy and her hair not near so white If I could only find the way back to the days of my childhood play Could I only find the days as they were seen And childish joys not speed away like dreams The schoolhouse on the hilltop and the meadows all in bloom The birdsong in the willow and the world not so full of gloom If I could only find the way back to the days of my childhood play |
Subject: Lyr Add: DAYS OF MY CHILDHOOD PLAYS From: GUEST,Dale Date: 24 Jun 03 - 12:09 AM Irritating, but I THINK I know what is happening. It is possible that it happens because I accidently hit the enter key after typing my name. It's a theory anyway. The notes to the Document CD pretty much ignore this recording, other than the recording data. They DO mention that Karnes bought his harp-guitar in 1927 for the princely, no KINGLY sum of $375. There are not a lot of differences, just a few subtle changes. Doc done good at remembering it. Now I just need Stewie to stop by and see how well I did. I don't hear the playS of the title as given in the notes. It was fun, a song that I have intended to add for a long time, but never got a round tuit. The Days Of My Childhood Plays Alfred G. Karnes, Bristol, TN, October 28, 1928 Could I only find the way back to yesterday To the golden days of my childhood play My life would be different, my enemies would be friends My leisures not wasted, my life so full of sins. If I could only find the way back to the days of my childhood play harp-guitar break! If I could only find the way back to the days of my childhood play Could I only find the days as they were then The golden days to live all over again My path would not be empty, I'd make a mark in light My mother so happy, her hair not near so white If I could only find the way back to the days of my childhood play Could I only find the days as they once seemed And childish joys not speed away like dreams The schoolhouse on the hilltop and the meadows all in bloom The birdsong in the willow, not a world not so full of gloom If I could only find the way back to the days of my childhood play harp-guitar break! If I could only find the way back to the days of my childhood play |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Days of my childhood ways From: GUEST,Dale Date: 24 Jun 03 - 12:24 AM And of course, since the elves are at work removing stupid mistakes, it seems that I am talking about nothing, which is what I sometimes do anyway. Correction to Watson version: and not a world so full of gloom Correction to Karnes version: He MAY be saying yesterdayS and playS in the first two lines, can't tell for sure. Remove not after world in last verse. Don't know why that line gave me trouble in both versions. Easy enough, really. Alfred Karnes was a magical singer and Baptist minister. I'll bet he could have converted some of us, even. He died in 1958. It is so unfortunate that the record companies only saw fit to leave us with eight songs, but at least we have those treasures to remember him by. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Days of my childhood ways From: GUEST,Dale Date: 26 Aug 03 - 09:55 PM I have hunted all over for versions of this song, but these seem to be the only two. It's too good a song to remain unsung. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Days of my childhood ways From: GUEST,Dale Date: 26 Aug 03 - 10:10 PM OK, three! I have virtually all of the NLCR albums, but that one escaped me. Mike Seeger is here just about every year. I surely would have asked him to do it if I had known that. Thanks. I'll try to remember that when he is here next. |
