Subject: Old Sogs 03 coming up!
From: AllisonA(Animaterra)
Date: 23 Jun 03 - 06:45 AM

Not a typo- I'm a-feared that Old Songs is going to be pretty soggy this year! I've tried in vain to rent or borrow a small camper van to keep my aging bones off the ground, but it looks like mud-camping again! I guess a Mud-catter oughta be able to take it, but I'm tempted to get a motel room just for sleeping. My 14-yr old doesn't wanna, so probably I'll just tough it out.

AT, I encourage you to think positively and expect the best.

In the meantime, I have picked up a couple of folding cots at a yard sale. If there's standing water inside the tent, it probably won't come up to the level of the cots. If there isn't, maybe they'll keep us away from that root or rock that always emerges from the ground just where your spine is about 2:00 am.

There is an interesting geological process involved in camping out. The ground is getting harder every year.

I think I've got enough guitars, and it's time to start putting my gig money into a fund for a truck camper. With a toilet. Maybe even a shower.

Peter.

No camping for me this year. A friend has me booked in to share a room in a B&B.

I will bring the rain gear along.

Cots are fine in warm climates, but in the cooler climes, they are a positive nightmare. They are meant for camping in tropical conditions where you need to be off the floor and the air can circulate beneath you. Use them in more temperate zones and the body just expends energy in trying to warm all that empty moving air beneath you, rather than resting. Get a cot with a valance (sheet that hangs down all the way round, but make sure it's a waterproof one or the damp will just use capillary action and soak upwards) or a solid waterproofed foam block to put underneath it.

I've never been so cold as the year I took a camp bed/cot to Towersey, even with all my bags underneath it and all my warmest clothes on me or over me.

I hear you talkin', Liz. I tried sleeping in a hammock once, on a cool night, in my youth. Woke up in the middle of the night, freezing, got out and slept on the ground.

But we have foam pads that we can put on the cots. Should take care of it.

I think the whole month of July may also be a wet one at Brushwood (western NY near Chattauqua), which is where I am headed after Old Songs to camp for a whole month!

I usualy camp under plenty of tree cover and have tarps there; but at Old Songs I will just have my tent...and minimal gear since I am having to carry it all myself before I hook up with my ride...guess I better bring something wool.

Every day recently that has had rain in the forecast, here in Boston, has been sunny! Except yesterday. So maybe we will get lucky by the weekend. Think sunny thoughts, everyone...

(I don't know the answer myself, I've only been going 8 or 10 years.)

I'm so excited: my family has a place in the Catskills that we go to every summer for Irish Arts Week in mid-July, and this year I convinced my dad that we need to go earlier so I can go to Old Songs too! Yay! Unfortunately, the possibility of going to two festivals in the rain is not so very cheerful. But it's better than not going.

Animaterra - I was wondering what you were referring to when you mentioned the typo - in this context, sogs makes more sense!

Ron- If the storms don't add ambience, they do add closeness! - I think it was two years ago that there was a deluge right before the Saturday evening concert and the entire concert was moved into the Sheep Barn. It was quite packed in there. The music was great, of course. And I also seem to remember that, as always, things were so well run at Old Songs that this went off without any or at least not much)delay. However, I won't be too upset if this downpour does not make a repeat performance this year.

I was in the sheep barn that night, or just outside under an awning across from the stage! It was an outstanding night!   The intimacy was perfect for artists like Joel Mabus. I also remember Karan Casey's performance that night - you could hear a pin drop in that barn. Of course it would have landed on mud and straw and not made much noise anyway, but you get the point!

Rain or shine, it will be a memorable festival! I can't wait!

Ron, I have always admired your postings here at Mudcat. You're wittier than anyone else and your IQ must be around 300. You're also extremely handsome, even though I haven't actually met you, and I'll bet your sweaty armpits smell like the finest French perfume. If it rains at Old Songs, you'll probably just trip lightly over the surface of the puddle. I admire you, nay, I WORSHIP you.

I'm really not that bad of a shower slut. I either get into the one at the campsite or people stand upwind. This year, they'll have a contractor provide a set-up where we can get a 5-minute shower for $5. I still look forward to meeting you, though. (I think we missed each other last year.)

Ron, I have a strong memory of Karen Casey's performance too. I was squished in right smack in the front. I usually loathe situations as crowded as that, but there was a very warm, friendly feel to that crowd and everyone remained polite despite the cramming.

The latest Yahoo forecast for Altamont is just partly cloudy, partly sunny weather all the way through, with highs in the mid-eighties Friday and the high seventies Saturday and Sunday; and no mention of any precipitation.

Never happen. Too good to be true. But it would be nice.

The other unofficial Mudcat meeting place is in the "100s" camping section, designated thus.

Every weather site I've checked has a different forecast. The only thing they seem to agree on is no rain on Saturday. Showers on Friday might be early or might be late, depends on where you look. Showers forecast again on Sunday.

It will be hot. It will cool off in the evening. Don't forget the jackets for the evening concerts!

Thanks for cluing me in. I'll check both the Folk Legacy Booth and the Chateau Woodchuck. (great photo!)

The last forecast I saw showed a slight possibility of showers on Friday afternoon (early, but hopefully not when any campers are setting up) and that's it. Pleasantly warm and often sunny the rest of the weekend. Keep your fingers crossed. (When not playing!)

Now I have to continue doing triage on the daytime schedules and try to get my choices down to a manageable number...

Gee; I've heard rumors of this "Old Songs" thing, and it certainly sounds interesting enough.

Duuuuhh... just where the heck is it happening, anyway?

It sounds like something I ought to take our old '81 27' motor-home to some time! Next year I'll have to get back in the loop and plan ahead.

How much does it cost to get in, just out of curiosity?

Aunt Mah'tha & I went to a Bluegrass Festival up heah in Brunswick last year, but when we found out that it was going to cost about $80 just for the Evening's events, we decided that that would be enough Bluegrass for us and depatred forthwith, unlikely to return ever again.
I noticed on the way out that the parking lot was full of shiney, brand new pickups, SUV's, Volvos, Saabs, Caddys, Jaguars & etc.. - I could only find two beat-up old pickups like the Locals might own, and I figured that they were probably called in to fix the toilets.

Hopefully this thing is a little more accessable to us common folk.

Have fun, all!

Words from a less-than-tough camper.
Airbeds float. Campbeds are very cold, 'cos your body squashes all the air out of the bedding, and the same problem with deck-chairs.
All of the above are improved greatly by being overlaid with camping-pads, which are 10mm thick closed-cell foam sheets.
Buy three each, two for the bed, (they don't slip on each other) and one to cut down for the chair. Maybe US$4 each, judging by our prices.
Camping is damp anyway, but cold and damp is miserable.
An 8x10 tarp and a few bamboo poles can make a real difference.
Hope you have a nice time.

The "congrats" fromm bbc are because Vixen was the Mudcatter who won the Taylor this year. It was a Baby Taylor, but still, it wasn't me. Hey Vixen -- YEEHAAAAA!

Not one drop of rain.   Hotter than Heck. Assigned camping wasn't bad. I got a spot, there weren't any tent-stake-murdering rocks, and I believe the Chucks, Barry, Hollowfox and I were in hollering distance from each other. Kendall was in the trailer park with his wimp-mobile and I believe he was planning to follow someone home.

Music was great - maybe I'll recover enough by tomorrow to post some about it. I left before the end, and I'd LOVE someone to say how it ended because I heard what was planned and it was gonna kick some serious ass.

Now, I'm gonna go take a shower and fall over...

Well, for those of you who might be curious, it drizzled a bit this afternoon, but the weather fairy smiled on Old Songs, and for the most part, it was pretty dry. I wasn't at the festival, but I am in New York right now and I went to the concert last night to hear Fairport Convention, and it was excellent!

I had a great time, after an assigned-campsite near-disaster! It wasn't clear to me or to certain others that the campsites were to be shared- I got there noonish on Saturday to find that one of my site-mates had taken over the entire site, corner-to-corner, and left the premises. I was given a teeny spot on someone else's site, which was fine since the emergency backup tent I had scrounged was a 2-person tent. Still, Peg and I agreed that a group of us should get a site together next year.
I had a great time visiting, didn't see enough of anyone, since I had to leave early Sunday to sing at a wedding. But since the wedding included lots of acappella group songs, as well as contra dancing and waltzes, I hardly felt I had left Old Songs at all!

Well, the grin hasn't worn off yet...I had a VERY hard time leaving the Baby this morning! Played it all day yesterday (though it sounds MUCH better when Reynaud plays it!)

I started a thread back in May sometime, seeking opinions about getting some work done on my Alvarez; but I haven't sent it out yet, because I didn't have a guitar to play while it was gone. Several folks who replied to that thread thought I should get a new guitar--this was not how I thought I'd get it though! HEY KENDALL--I got a Taylor!!! (yours is safe from me now!)

What a delight! It's so comfortable to play, and it sounds terrific!

Aside from winning a Taylor, Old Songs, for two newbies, was WONDERFUL! We saw a mess of Mudcats--Jeri, Animaterra, DuaneD, Sandy and Caroline, Dick and Susan, Barbara and Frank Shaw, Charlie Baum, and I can't remember who-all else. We only day-tripped on Saturday, because we're camping at Mineral Springs Bluegrass Festival next weekend, and we thought camping two weekends in a row might not be real relaxing. NEXT YEAR, we'll be camping for sure. We managed to get to a bunch of workshops and performances, and had a blast. Reynaud thanks Barbara Shaw for the use of her fiddle!

What a great weekend!!!

V (grinning whenever she thinks of the Baby!)

I had a great time! I almost wished it rained a bit, the dust storms were brutal at times!

Musically it was terrific to see some of my favorites - including Christopher Shaw & Bridget Ball, Magpie, Scott Ainslie, Hot Soup, Faith Petric, and John McCutcheon.   If I had the opportunity to put together a festival, these artists would be on my "A" list. I'm glad someone at Old Songs feels the same way.

Danny Spooner was wonderful. He did an excellent set at Mystic a few weeks back and he was equally wonderful at Old Songs. I hope he comes back to the U.S. soon!

Some "new" favorites - Steve Tilston, I've loved his recordings and it was great to finally see him; Old New England (Bob McQuillen is a legend and this was the first chance I've had to see him); Brian McNamara (I loved the CD that he did "Leitrim's Hidden Treasure" and it was great to finally watch him in person); and Little Johnny England.   Actually I saw Little Johnny England a year ago and was less then impressed. Perhaps I caught them on a bad day, because this year they were excellent. A nice blend of traditional and contemporary.

I had mixed feelings about Fairport Convention. At times I felt they were out of their element at a festival like Old Songs.   At times they came across as too slick and rehearsed, something that seems out of place for a festival that oozes spontaneity.   On the other hand they are superb craftsman. Watching them at work in some of the workshops that Simon & Dave participated in realy showcased the artistry and heritage that are the core of the group. Overall it was a pleasant experience.

I love the Arrogant Worms!   Why don't they play the U.S. more often?

My favorite part of Old Songs remains the post concert sings. I always lurk in the back, croaking along with my voice in the chorus. (I couldn't carry a tune even if it had a handle on it!). Barry, you were in excellent form!    Jeri, I did hear you sing on Saturday - a nice song and good voice.    Who was that woman sitting next to you? She had a powerful voice and I was very impressed.

I've marked my calendar for next year!

Ron, thanks. There are some folks who are 'lurkers' on the internet, and I'm convinced you're a festival lurker. I STILL haven't met you! The little bitty woman with big voice was Barbara Benn from Portsmouth NH. She often comes to our Friday night Press Room sessions. I'll let her know you mentioned her.

Fairport...I was wondering if I'd like them since I've heard mixed reviews. I loved them. You pretty much know to expect loud and somewhat slick. They've been doing the songs for ages and they probably have the arrangements down solid in their brains. Wonder what they play when they go back to the hotel, though.

I also loved the Arrogant Worms. The Celine Dion song, the pirate song, and the one about the kid who keeps getting parts bitten off by an alligator (or was it a crocodile?). Who else could get an entire (blood) shed full of people - mostly adults - to make jaws out of their arms and chomp each other?!

Steve Tilston - I hadn't seen him before, but what an incredible guitar player!

Afro-Contra Sound System...OK, so that's MY name for them. Fennig's All Stars played a workshop with the Fode Sissoko trio (Senegal) and it was just incredible! Fode and group would start a song and the Fennig's musicians would improvise around them. I couldn't tell they hadn't practiced at all, except for the fact the music had that soaring quality that happens when a bunch of accomplished and creative musicians give the spirit of the music free rein. I'd heard this was going to be involved in the finale, and I wonder how it turned out.

Jeri - I may be a bit shy, but I'm not really a lurker. The problem is I don't know many of the Mudcatters by sight! I ran into a few dozen people that I know, but there were hundreds of people who I don't know. I did stop by the Folk-Legacy booth a few times and met whoever was there. I recognized some of you at the sings, only because I heard names mentioned. I didn't think it was appropriate to bother people during the sing. Forgive me, next time we should make a specific time and place to gather - just to give those of us who don't know everyone the opportunity to say hello. I still enjoyed watching you! (I feel almost like a stalker!!)

Please tell Barbara how impressed I was. If she ever records anything, I would love to share her music with my radio listeners.

I did enjoy Fairport, but I thought they were a bit out of their element on Saturday night. I noticed a number of people left early. I've seen them before and they are an amazing band to experience, I just thought the audience reaction was a bit subdued and that definetly affects the performance.

Ron - s'ok. I was just kidding about the lurker thing. You could've 'bothered' me, but I understand why you didn't. I wouldn't have either. Personally, I often get so tired at festivals that I don't have the attention span or energy to be as sociable as is considered normal by others, and find myself gravitating to situations where I don't have to focus on anything or BE the focus. Doesn't stop me from giving others some crap about it though.

Not gripping. Stating facts. Old Songs was great. Peg is an outstanding travel companion, hell of a good cook, beautiful singer and, a very competent debater!

As usual, I spent most of the time at the Woodchuck's Revenge tent. (They always have Jamisons whiskey) All I can afford is Black Velvet. And a fun time was had by all.I finally met my match in the Limericks department, Peter Cady, but I put up a hell of a fight! Havn't laughed that much in years.

Jeri picked on me, as usual, but I have a thick hide.
Got to meet John McCutcheon; sang his song The Old Brown's Head Light at the open mike. Nice song about a lighthouse I have sailed by countless times back when it was manned by a real person instead of a bank of batteries.

The Folk Legacy booth was crowded, as usual. Sandy is looking good for a man twice his age! Seriously, I noticed right away that he looks better than the last time I saw him.

Too many Mudcatters to list, and sure as hell I will leave someone out, so wont even try.
Someone mentioned all camping together next year in the trees across the field. Nice cool spot, no dust and quiet.

All in all, it was just great. By the way, I didn't just "follow someone home" I was invited! After such a weekend, I always get post festival depression, and to combine that with driving across Massachusettes alone was too much to face, so, I returned through Vermont, staying over Sunday night at the Cady place. It was then that Peter slammed a book down in front of me, titled THE LIMERICK! No wonder he is so good with these things. It's such a kick to see him interact with Chris and Andrea. What a fun family. My thanks to everyone who put up with me.

Is that good enough, bbc?

The Arrogant Worms were absolutely hilarious! Trees and rocks and rocks and trees and trees and rocks and rocks and trees and...water! Really makes you want to visit Canada, doesn't it?

A lot of people did leave early when Fairport Convention was performing. I was one of them, and in my case it was because they started half an hour later than they were supposed to. I was planning on leaving when they were done, which was supposed to be at 11pm, because I was tired and had to drive an hour to get home. I also had my dad with me, who doesn't like to stay out too late. If they had started anything resembling on time, I would have been there for the finish. But I know that musicians, especially folk musicians, can't really be expected to abide by schedules.

What I did hear of Fairport Convention was great, except that the instruments were louder than the singing and I couldn't understand any of the lyrics, and I couldn't understand anything that was said in introducing the songs because whoever happened to be talking was mumbling (which is another annoying habit of folk musicians...can't they be a bit more courteous to the people who came to listen?). Ah, well. The music was great.

Anyone for Old Songs, the Reality Show?

We also had a great time, (as you probably gathered from Kendall)although I probably should have gone to more workshops and concerts, since I'd paid for them. But it was so pleasant under the big tarp in the shade, picking and singing and beering...

Here is the text that I printed on the back of my feedback sheet (in a very small font, obviously):

Gripes and Whines: (NOTE: These are gripes and whines from people who think Old Songs is the best festival anywhere in the Northeast, and intend to continue going indefinitely, unless it goes to hell. But we'd just as soon it didn't go to hell, so we feel we should point out what we perceive as weaknesses.

1) We got camping in the "noisy at night" area so that we could sit around and sing and play in the evening. But "noisy at night," before, always meant noisy because of the campers themselves. The sound levels at the evening concerts were so high, and there was so little separation between the yellow camping area and the main stage, that, a lot of the time, you couldn't do your own music in the camping area because the evening concerts drowned it out.

2) While I think of it, what IS this thing with old English "folk"-rock? If I wanted to be deefened, I'd have gone to a rock festival and have done with it. Can we have folk music next year? (Yes, you had Chris and Bridget and Mike Seager and some others who were great. But I bet I know where you blew most of the budget. Trying to get "names" that were supposed to attract more people than the folk music community, in hopes of making more money, nearly wiped out the Champlain festival, a few years ago. Be afraid.)

3) "Mosquitoes was bitin' my nose, and crawdads was nibblin' my toes...." Well, okay, there weren't any crawdads. But there were so many mosquitoes that crawdads were completely unneccessary. I don't remember really serious bug problems at night at any previous Old Songs. This could mean either that there were prior bug problems, but I've blocked them out of my memory; that this year was a fluke of weather conditions, etc.; or (I think most likely) that the field where they set up the new camping area is low enough ground that it breeds a great deal more bugs than the infield ever could. I don't know what you can do about this. If you spray the area with anything toxic enough to do any good, the folkies will panic and run in all directions. Repellant is a BAD idea if you play a wooden instrument with any kind of finish on it. But you ought to warn people who camp there. Some of 'em might be more sensitive to bug bites than average.

4) How come the people with the RVs got all the shady spots in the trees? Did they pay a lot more?

It's the same the 'ole world over, It's the poor as gets the sun. While the rich has all the shady spots. It ain't no f***in' fun!

5) Lose the wristbands. It's too much like being in a concentration camp, and a lot of us who pick find anything confining the wrists and hands to be a nuisance. Or if you just use them instead of buttons because they're cheaper, give them to people and let them display them as they wish, rather than telling the gate people to force them onto peoples' wrists. I much prefer the buttons you've used a lot of years. They're great souvenirs, too. Sure, a few people will hand them around in order to sneak in without paying. But I'm sure it won't be enough to seriously impact your cash flow. The great majority of folk music people are sickeningly honest as long as they're treated honestly. Haven't you ever been in a music store with the rock CDs in locked cases and the folk CDs in open ones?

6) Every year, the main bathroom seems to close just when it's most needed. If you always have enough people to crash the septic system, why not have the honeydippers on call for Saturday evening or so. Sure, they'd charge extra for coming out on a weekend, but if you have the kind of attendance to cause you to need them, you should have enough cash flow to pay.

Good Points:

1) The expansion of the camping areas out into the field, and the use of reserved designated camping spaces, was, IMO, a good idea, even if the State forced it on the organizers. There was no need to rush to be there when the gates opened, in order to get a good space, and there was room to move around without tripping over your neighbors' tent stakes. And you could sleep without being kept awake by the snoring, or the children fighting (with each other or their parents) in the tent three feet from you.

2) There were porta-potties within a reasonable distance of the camping. For this, every male over 50 with the slightest hint of BPH (which means almost every male over 50) thanked you at 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning.

3) The annual rainstorm never happened. But I don't know if the management can claim credit for this - unless they're willing to accept blame for the rainstorms in all the prior years.

Peter.

Phil, so that was YOU whose hands I was staring at! Nice guitar, nice playing!

Peter, I got the distinct impression that they didn't spray for bugs beforehand this year. I think they usually do. The count in the women's bathroom late at night was such that one got really exhausted doing the bug-avoidance/massacre dance while trying to wash one's face.

I also liked the proximity of the porta-potties even if I don't even own a prostate. The main bathroom crew was also outstanding this year - there was always soap, paper towels and TP. I DO wish they'd go out and buy a decent friggin' hot water heater! There's nothing quite like getting one's relatively long hair full of shampoo right about the time the water temperature drops from lukewarm to icewater in the space of about 10 seconds. What with the bug dance and the shower dance/screaming session, I slept really well. At least my tent didn't fall over until I was out of it on Sunday morning and I made it home before I did.

So they did have showers! That is the only thing that keeps me from camping - I need my shower in the morning!

The bugs were brutal this year. I even had bug spray. My arms which were uncovered and pretty well sprayed did well, as did my face. Stupid me, I didn't bother to spray my shirt or pants and somehow they managed to get under my shirt and do a number on my back.

I'm with Midchuck on the buttons.   Those wristbands made me feel like a hospital patient.

As I said previously, I do enjoy Fairport Convention. I agree though, they were a bit out of place for some.

Yes, that was me. Nice to see you in person. My singing partner, Margaret was there in her puppet making guise. I came to help with the driving (long way from Chicago) and to hang out, while she was hard at work. We decided years ago to pop for motels after the old canvas tent self-destructed. The main problem with hotelling it, as I see it, is that there's no place to crash at 4:00 Saturday afternoon when you've been singing and playing and listening and dancing and trudging across the hot tracks back and forth and around and around- even my 14 year old took a nap! I did, too, and it made a huge difference to my evening.
I'm still really sorry I had to leave, and I really missed the evening sings, so as usual I'm looking ahead already to Next Year!

actually, yes, it DID rain! On Monday around 4 am...my tent was flattened (practically with me in it, as i was standing half out the door tyring to hold down the rain fly which was threatening to blow away). The wind was so strong it destroyed one of my tent poles...ripped the aluminum fitting in half...

I was soaked and homeless but, having moved my tent over into the shady RV spot eveyone is crowing about (Mudcatters, we WILL request this spot as a group next year, yes??? If one of us has an RV they can't refuse us; it has electric and water hookups), I stole into an unlocked (thank gods) truck which happily contained a pillow and blanket in the back of the seats...I left a thank you note to the unwitting Samaritans who, like their neighbors in the shady Yuppie compound, did not stir from their rigs until well after I had left the next morning...

I waited out the storm, then slept a bit nad groggily watched the honeywagon guys take the portapotties and portable sinks away...at least the fairgrounds bathrooms were fixed by then!

Very thankful I did not have to spend the night in a wet tent....

(where I come from, when a strom hits in the middle of the night, you check on those poor souls in tents to see if they're okay, but that's just me I guess)...

I tent to get "peopled out" at these things so was thankful for the fine hospitality at the Chucks' humble abode...they let kendall and i come cook dinner with then so we did not have to eat alone on the hot dusty field (we got assigned the crappiest camping spot ever--"quiet area" my ass; it was right next to the entrance of the vending area!)

I attended a number of dance workshops (more accessible showers would have come in handy but I managed okay) and enjoyed them immensely. I got frienly (somewhat)with one of the musicians in le Vent du Nord, a very fun and excellent Quebecois band...they are playing Summerfest in New Bedford next week so check them out!

Looking forward to next year, if all goes well...

Well, Peg, you certainly paid admission, by sharing food, sharing songs, and confronting Todd head-on when he went into Rant Mode. The rest of us sort of considered it something you work around like rainstorms or bugs....

Next year we put Kendall's camper in the lower area with the shade trees and put a canopy up next to it.

Kendall, there's a llama farm less than a mile up the road from me. I'd rent one for you, but I don't think she'd fit in my car.

Peter, being dead can require a whole lot of planning if you're really into it. Look at all those Egyptian pharoes - their whole lives were focused on being dead. I had a great aunt that was like that. Well, she didn't build any pyramids. It was more along the lines of "Life sucks and I can't wait to get the Hell out of here and you can all just piss off." (I'm paraphrasing here.) Her life did NOT suck but she managed to elevate passive-aggressiveness at the world to an art form. Me, I think being dead requires too MUCH planning. I'd have to clean the house.

Kendall, I wish I had a wimpmobile! Of course, judging by your RV Talking Blues, there was nothing wimpish in getting the thing ready to roll! (Did you write that?)

Yes, Jeri, I did, and every word was true.

Folks, I was being funny! No one picked up on the similarity between being in love and being dead!

Of course I'll be there, alone or with someone. No way would I waste time on a woman (or a sheep, Llama, chicken etc) who doesn't like our kind of music.
