I'm not being a spoil sport I shall enjoy watching your testicles floating down the humber while the rest of you languishes in a hell of your own creating! I tried to help you boy but some people are just too dumb to accept help!

See you in whitby (if you survive)?

Big Bird - that is such a shame. My intervention would have saved Deanie from a fate worse than death (a fate that has nothing to do with you as it comes from outside these mudcat walls). He knows what I am talking about. Oh well you can lead a horse to water etc.

Well Deanie I tried, but be it on your own head you poor poor man.

Small Piper I did as a child learn the bag ( big) pipes and actually love the pipes ( couldnt eat a whole set though) I am not a war monger I dont encourage people to fight - I dont lie!!

Big Bird - you will make a great daughter in law - you have my fickle nature!!

Sorry smallpiper, and MC Fat - Deanmeister wins out of sheer bloody persistence and if only to shut him up for a minute. It seems we will indeed be carrying suitcases for Kampervan and R&WR to some glorious paradise island........Skegness should do it. No more fighting please - the loss of any one of you to womankind would be a devastating blow indeed :o)

Do not let them confuse you Big Bird. Now that you have agreed to be mine, we can live in bliss and let these ijits squable amoungst themselves for the scraps from our table.

R&WR if you are not a warmonger then why are you encouraging people to fight for a lost cause? And the only reason that you insult all pipers can be only down to ignorance - for that you may be forgiven.

R&WR - if we are to be sisters-in-law at some time in the future, methinks you might be willing to give me some small indication of the loyalty which is bound to eventually grow amongst us and give me a bit of a clue as to who is the MCFat character with whom it has been suggested I could live happily ever after? ..... and more to the point - can he sing in harmony?

well shes hopping on another thread - I suggested she returns north for the jump - I might to see your demise DeanM but since you are still around I guess something went wrong with your calculations

Smallpiper I am not a warmonger - I am a peaceful soul who believes in love and peace - I didnt start the duels blame that on MCFAT - by the way MCFAT - old git wants to know are the rules still the same for the repeat duel?

this is very interesting - I am no expert in matters pertaining to flight and crashing into chariots - but surely DeanMeister you cannot accept that the BigBird whom you 'ave fought so valiantly for can be whisked off by him with the 'small parts'.
I cannot believe that you are thinking of ending it all and not having one last duel to fight for the hand of 'er what is to become my daughter in law. I would rather have lurve songs round the Sunday tea table than bits of drain pipe - come on DeanMeister - you can win the hand of the fair lady

Ah Mr Dean you giving me spelling lessons? Do you really feel up to it? really.... Also I happen to know that you will reach terminal velocity very quickly however your horizontal flight will be a mere 10 feet followed by a large splash! My chariot (and the trees) are safe. As is the hand of the beloved Big Bird.

And whats with the military stuff deanie you have gone daft havn't you?

Incidentally, you can't spell destruction. I don't converse with illiterate peasants. See you on the other side. Perhaps you will have received an education by then. Big Bird may have taught you to write the English language, since she is clearly your intellectual superior.

Now mr deanie do I detect a touch of angst? It is precisely these teanage antics that cause you to fail so spectacularararararilarilarily!

There is a terrible flaw to your self distruction plan (well actually it won't stop you from self distruction but my chariot will be safe)have you forgotten about the trees? Now stop dribbling, tuck your shirt in and behave - I'll talk to you latter.

As a slight twist, and in order that my demise may achieve something other than the destruction of said chariot, I have today purchased the strap-on wings that that fellow used recently to freefall across the English Channel. My plan is simple, but I think you'll agree, quite effective.

At precisely 8pm North Lincolnshire Meantime, I shall climb to the top of the south stanchion of the Humber Bridge watched by the assembled musicians of Barton upon Humber. KJ, Skipjack and Bloke in the corner can be my witnesses to ensure that the operation is carried out under sterile conditions, and my entry into the Barton Book of Records will be secured for all eternity. Oakley has supplied pyrotechnics as used by the Purple Helmets Bicycle Display Team to make the proceedings more spectacular.

At precisely 8.15pm, wind conditions prevailing, I shall leap fearlessly from the stanchion, and skillfully angle my descent northwards, across the Humber Estuary, trailing purple and green smoke, directly at the three foot target my trusty second will have painted on the side of Smallplonker's chariot, whilst hollering at the top of my voice "THIS ONE'S FOR BIG BIIIIIIIRD...I LUUUURVED YOOOOOOOOOOOU!!!!!!!" At 8.15 and 8 seconds, by my calculations, said chariot will be spread all over the car park, and I will be immortalised as the first man to fly unpowered across the Humber Estuary. I will finally have achieved something in my pitiful life, and all those who have belittled me in the past will have to eat their words.

So there. I hope you're proud of yourselves.

Well it would seem that the Meister and disappointment are indeed destined to be forever intertwined.

SP, I shall never speak to you again. Have a look out of your window at about 8 o'clock this evening. The hunched, dishevelled, pitiful figure on the bridge parapet about 200 feet above your car park will be me. Hope I don't make too much mess for your neighbours, but I will attempt to land head first on the chariot with which you intend to whisk away my one true love.

"Oh my love she won't have me, as I understand.
For she wants a freeholder, and I have no land.
I cannot maintain her, with the silver and gold,
or the other pretty fine things that my loves house can hold.

So farewell my dear mother, farewell sister too,
For I'm going to ramble this whole wide world through,
and when I get tired, oh I'll sit down and cry,
and think on pretty Big Bird with a tear in my eye"

Farewell.
DM.

By the way oldgit, I hope you're not taking all of this personally, it's just that there are some things that just transcend ordinary mortal relationships.

I was hoping that your duel with MC Fat would have saved me the angst of causing you any distress; I figured I could deal with him using more brutal means. I hold you no grudge and I wish you a long and happy life; it's just that RW&R and I are destined to be together; like folk and song; spliff and good time; DeanMeister and disappointment.

I hope we can all be friends.

Well now DeanM, you may be getting somewhere with that last suggestion. (Although I think that your previous contribution belonged to a different thread)

R&WR and I would just love to spend the next 50 years or so sipping Margheritas ( that's when we're not otherwise engaged of course); so if you fancy carrying our bags and generally making sure that we don't run out of any essentials, then you'd be welcome.
MCFat could pop along from time to time to sing a few songs, ( we'd let you listen so you could pick up a few tips on good singing); and as for BigBird, well I guess it's up to her to decide on whom she will bestow her favours but beware, she's a hard on those who don't live up to her expectations.

You'd love her R&WR, she's talented, pretty, and from much further south than you'd think; i.e. New Zealand.
Well she's from Grimsby actually but she's now one of the few upholders of the Tradition in Kiwiland.

Anyway, go for it sis. protect your niece from the evil machinations of the jump-lead wielding DeanMeister and support your bruv in his glorious quest to become R&WR's truest and forever love.
P.S. You'd love MCFat.

PPS Thanks for the use of the jump leads DeanMeister. I don't forget good deeds; I'll grant you an honourable and quick departure from this incarnation. I truly believe that you are close to Nirvana; there only remains .....HUMILITY

However, on looking back through this thread, I think Deanmeister should win on basis of sheer enthusiasm......! Alternatively the rematch could be set on the basis of songs that Jim has no knowledge of (if such a thing were possible) thus removing the unfair advantage he seems to wield at such events!

A conjugation of beauty and talent.
Humour and erudition.
Two voices in potential perfect harmony.

And it just happens to leave the way clear for R&WR & I to move on to the next stage of what I believe to be to millenium's greatest love story.

Ahhhh perfect bliss.

I dont think MCFAT wishes to withdraw - I merely suggestedthat the DeanMeister might possibly have won the hand of the fair lady BIGBIRD - however, the DeanMeisters appalling showing in the Burns Round when he failed to sing a note means that he should have forfeit the duel completely as the rules clearly said 'SING'the sculduggery and bribary were clearly acceptable in the rules therefore perhaps the DeinMeister wants to withdraw and leave the fair BIG BIRD to MCfat after all

The young lady playing the flute who has also been declared the winner is called Rosemary, I believe, not Abigail (unless we're talking about two different peeps).

The young man playing guitar and manfully following Skipjacks changes of key through Pinch of Snuff is Alex, DeanMeister mark 2.

Both added greatly to the session, talented musicians that they are.

I dispute the captions though: pictures 3&4 show Noreen refusing to be bribed by MCFat. I have witnesses! (Witnesses and the Deanmeister ate the bribe.)

My evidence is still in the industrial-age-technology camera.

The judge's decision is final! If MCFat's side wishes to withdraw and leave the field for you, O Meister, that's nothing to do with me...

(sorry small piper about the intruments - it was unintentional but the DeanMeister was too quick on the dodge

The result was declared by Noreen to be a dishonourable draw however, after discussions with the DeanMeister I declare him the winner - Big Bird MCFAT is more father figure for you - no Sooty I didnt say grandfather!

However I think most people declared Abigail the winner after her briliant flute playing!

Kampervan its time you made a trip up north so we can confrim wedding arrangements for next years Beverley - you realise after the nuptuals it means we have to sit and not talk to each other - but then who said anything about talking anyway!

Still I guess if you attend MCFATS weekend of 49 and 3/4 birthday revelries in November that would give you time to toughen up. Besides I dont think I can wait for a whole year before I am in your arms again - 'kamp' or not!

Its Beverley tomorrow and I am sure the proceedings will be fought honourably amongst some excellent singing from everyone else who dont have the distiction of being quite so mad as those of us who seem to have monopolised this thread - sorry guys/ girls rabbits and those who are not quite sure.

Well it had better be honourable as I might have mes petits lapins with moi!

Hang on here just a cotton pickin minute....................

This thread is taking a turn in a direction that is causing me some not insubstantial twitching in the trigger finger.
My sweet little sprog and thongs and mudfights in the same train of thought???????
Not to mention my darling wife-to-be, for whom the heavens be praised, and of whom only I am allowed to think wicked thoughts.

SO--------- lay off big bird and Red and white rabbit other wise I shall be forced to fight a duel with the WHOLE WORLD. And I will,if that's what it takes.
And it won't be a pretty sight, cos I might just have to resort to .......Daniel O'Donnel,Jim Reeves, or even the SPINNERS.

So, get back to your beer, Burns and breaking wind, and leave the loves of my life to sophisti-bleeding-cated moi

When are you sending the low cut thong photos so we can get them printed off?

I am not sure I should judge Mr MC since your are duelling for another I might have a vested interest!!! Besides I have always been fond of bribary and corruption!!

Bribery and scullduggery it is, then! Perhaps Noreen might oblige with the thong and low cut thingy??? Or will she be the Judge?

Aha, I have an idea, perhaps Big Bird can send us some photographs of her, suitably attired and holding up the relevant round numbers? We could have them blown up lifesize so they could be shown around the room like those John Smith cutouts...! This will also provide additional incentive to the combatants, assuming Jim's heart can hold out....

The rules of engagement as follows Pete. A toss of the coin to determine first or second (so what comes next may be reversed) Jim Round 1 Burns Songs v Pete Round 1 Lurve Songs; Jim Round 2 Lurve Songs v Pete Round 2 Burns Songs; Jim Round 3 Jim's Second v Pete Round 3 Pete's Second; Jim Round 4 Freestyle v Pete Round 4 Freestyle. There can be optional swimsuit and eveningwear rounds and a wet T-shirt competition. Perhaps Red & White Rabbit may judge or score.

As far as I know, neither Big Bird or her Kampervan will be in attendance due to the distance involved, so somebody bring a camera for the satellite uplink?

DeanMeister - is your challenge then Luurve songs? Have you a second since yours chickened out?

Big Bird will you be there to witness this duel for your honour/ hand what ever it was? Will we need a satellite link instead and will your Dad be there to discuss future wedding plans?

MCFAT -Old Git has been away on holiday and would accept a replay of the duel but hasnt had time to prepare for a new one - however, should the Lord Raggytash of Kirklees, West Yorkshire and Northern England not be available Old Git would be willing to act as your second. Beware, McFat. You're fishing for my catch...

On day fishing in a brook, with a worm upon my hook,
I turned round as in a dream, braces dangled in the stream.
Some old shark came passing by so proudly underneath,
Nipped my braces, winked his eye, then whispered through his teeth.

Never let your braces dangle dingle dingle dangle.
That old shark out for a lark I'll teach you to angle.
He give a tug, I was into his jaw, into is tum and I said Oh Lor!
As he pushed me out of his little back door.
Never let your braces dangle.

See you Sunday....if you dare.

Sharkey ;-)

Husband Number four glad you were finally able to say hi - was beginning to think that your fair daughter was keeping you from me since she is being fought over by husband number three and Deanmeister - I dont think I have heard the song

"Ball joint separators, nut splitters, impact screwdrivers, circlip pliers. They're the tools that I live amongst. "
looking forward to it. Are you actually coming to Beverley or not do they fight over your daughter in your absence?

Deanmeister - I am looking forward to meeting you again - if you need any inside information for the duel - just ask - since he's obviously after another wife I might as well help him be defeated then he can go back to being alone!!

Well hi folks.
Husband-to-be No4 here. I've been watching all this with the keen interest of a consumate tactician. (Coward). Duals are for losers,Gentlemen, fools. Stand there while someone takes a pot at you?
My plan is to let MC Fat tire himself out on all the other contenders, then just when his eyelids droop (more than usual that is)and he feels safe enough to expose himself ........ then I'll be waiting, possibly with amplification (cos I'm no purist).

It'll be all over before he's had time to think of a key.
Anyway, if I've been challenged then its my choice of weapons.
So there.
Ball joint separators, nut splitters, impact screwdrivers, circlip pliers. They're the tools that I live amongst. Just think on that you lily-livered guitar plucker.

Red and White Rabbit - looks like husband no.4 isn't taking up the challenge - what has happened to him? Maybe he's not suitable husband material..... Calling all Kampervans!
Who are the most eloquent Bassic and Hodgsons?? Isn't it against the law to non-participate in pre-duel banter?
Oh, and I only put my best duelling low cut top and shorts on for proper duels, and then only once a year - it takes the locals a while to recover. But, without casting aspersions on your stamina, MC Phat, I think that with so many duels to take up you'll have run out of steam by the time you get to faversham........!

Hey Big Bird - you should come up to Beverley for that session on Sunday Auf. 3rd - bring my prosective husband number 4 with you (dadio) and I will bring current husband number 3 ( MCFAT ) and then he will have two duels to fight -

The same rules apply

3 rounds each

1 specialist round - songs of a specific genre MCFAT favours Burns
1 away round - a song in the genre of your oponent
1 free style round - song of your choice (watch out for for sneakiness here)
bathing suits and evening wear optional

Big Bird you will have to dress in low cut top and shorts to carry the numbers round in full view of everyone ( well that was what MCFAT said)

For anybody who's interested, Sunday 3rd of August will be the 60th First Sunday of the Month Session/Singaround at the Sun Inn in Beverley. I started this session five years ago at Nellies following the Festival, with a view to continuing the Festival feel once a month throughout the year. It is, I believe, the best attended afternoon of song, music, and beer for many miles around, and has been visited by people from all over the UK.

It has been successful in it's aim, and I have thoroughly enjoyed it, indeed I'm very proud of it. I have decided that after the next one, I am retiring as m/c, to hand the mantle over to somebody else to keep it live for the next five years. I have suggested ossonflags, and he would be proud to, though we will discuss this with everybody who attends the next session.

I would be extremely happy and chuffed if my last afternoon as the gaffer could be attended by as many of you as possible to make it a memorable occasion. I have met many fine singers and musicians in the past at this session, indeed made many long lasting friends. I hope to see you there. Perhaps the McPhat Boy himself may fancy an appearance?

Keep the Music playing, my friends.

Pete.

Thoroughly enjoyed Beverley! First time - (which is practically criminal as I was born there!) Agree with comments re food tent - all we were looking for was a burger or like, but full cooked lunch- no ta! Enjoyed concerts - Saturday 'main event' didn't appeal, but 'Comedy Club' was BRILLIANT - pity about the hot&crowded conditions - my mum had to go out when she couldn't get a seat and missed Barachois. Reckon this would have filled the main hall. NB - Sound engineers at the Playhouse particularly good - and let's keep the venue alive. Main gripe is that I can't split myself into several people so I can go to afternoon concerts AND the sessions AND wander around the town!
Well done to all involved, hope to be back next year!

Morning!
Daughter of Kampervan here. Just got my act together to look at the conversation on Beverley. MC Fat - I thought you'd challenged my esteemed father to a duel - but can't find any sign of it! About time someone cut him down to size - are you the man for the job?

All sessions were great. For the people who felt left out - chill out, take your time and turn up a few years, once your face is recognised a couple of times it's easier for people to strike up conversations. People at Beverley are really friendly, I've been to far worse, cliquey festivals. Give them a chance - they really try hard to include people in singarounds (cheers to Jim, Pete and Les and Maggie) and are as welcoming as you get within the constraints of singaround etiquette and copious pint drinking. I only see these guys once a year, and its taken a couple of years to get talking to people but its worth it!

Blimey - thats far too much for a saturday morning! See ya!

No you are wrong SF. It happens accidentally along with the music but if it was a theme it would have to be planned with very serious attention to detail and done intentionally!

Smallpipes,I think it is a case of bad manners when singers or musicians talk through someone performing. These people above all should have an understanding of the behaviore expected.I also find it hard to understand how singers ,who must have some knowledge of traditional music, can fail to keep quite when some one is playing a slow air.Take your point Linda,I have had the same annoying experiance of musicians trying to talk/ play over me.

Here's an idea for a theme for the fringe,
LOTS OF HEAVY DRINKING!!!!!!.

Everybody's attitude to music has totally changed since piped music crept in everywhere. Music, whether live or piped, is now assumed to be spontaneously generated by the wallpaper, and the converation volume increases automatically when it starts. It's not for listening to, it's to provide an underscore for your speaking voice. Amplification makes it worse, but the unplugged variety is far from immune.
I really enjoyed the sessions at Nellies, especially Sunday, when I got to play with a fine didgeridoo-ist for the first time. Oombanjo did a great job of sorting it out. However I had to pack up my instruments and abandon ship for safety purposes about 9 pm on Saturday when they started dancing on the table.

Cheers

Points taken and acknowledged. Linda I am aware that not every singer does this but it still puzzels me. The particular session I am talking about consisted of myself, KJ and Colin, my mate Pete a couple of punters and the three ladies. so there were 4 singers and three musicians (I'm not saying that singers arn't musicians I'm making the distinction for the sake of clarity).Yet three of the singers insisted on holding loud conversations during both my own and solo colins slow airs. I am realy don't think that it is just a case of bad manners because I and many other musicians have experienced the same thing. I am wondering if it is the case that (some) singers just don't value musicians. We are all born with a voice but playing an instument does not come naturally. I don't know what do others think?

As for a theme for the fringe I don't think that is a good idea, it will polarise and seperate the events. However, I see nowt wrong with having a few themed events.

When we talk about sessions in the Sun, we are talking about a very rare thing. We have singers and tune players in the same room!

This very seldom happens. Much more often they choose to stay apart. Fortunately we have a number of participants who do both, and there's plenty of accompanied song that the 'tunists' can join in with. And we have some very skilled joiners-in! Some tune players will 'accompany' a song by playing the melody a bit louder than the singer.

We also have to remember that it's a pub, it's open to all, and some people are only there for the beer.

But it's right what has been said. We do owe it to each other to support each others' spots by listening, or at least not talking loudly. We also owe it to each other by being helpful to the MC, pointing out who might do something, or if anyone's getting missed out.

Les

Sorry to do this to you all, and bring you back to one or two of the objectives of the thread but,as Sir Roger wrote, we have spoken to, and received support from most of the pubs to support the Fringe, and advertise in the main programme next year. It was also agreed that the Fringe places on the fields were secured for next year. I like the idea of an 'Organised Mudcat' gathering (upstairs at Nellies maybe or in its courtyard if the sun is shining) and/or maybe have a different theme for the Fringe each year(SUGGESTIONS WELCOME).

Smallpiper, I have been thinking about your comments regarding singers talking through tunes and whilst I dont accept it to be true of all singers I do agree that it does happen (and visa versa I might add espcially a certain fiddle player who stood between me and Hazel once and had a conversation with someone behind us midsong) the only reasonable explanation I can think of is numbers- if you get a lot of musicians playing together people tend to talk assuming the volume will drown them out. equally if you have a number of singers singing you are more likely to hear people speaking. I think we have to live with it -it is particularly ignorant when there is solo work going on either a tune or a song but frankly we perform in public bars and I guess we have to accept it.

Running sessions/singarounds (particularly at festivals) is a pretty thankless task - why do you think I avoid doing it. Anyway, I would like to formally thank MCFat(Sun on Sat, Oddies most of the time), Deanmeister(Sun on Sun), Les & Maggie (Hodgson's on Fri, Sat and Sun), John & Christine(Oddies) and Tim(Oddies) for their sterling efforts in that department.

Also Ossonflags and Linda & Hazel for similar work in the folk club on the Saturday afternoon.

I do hope that they will all be willing to put their heads on the block again for us next year. If not, we are in deep trouble.

Peter, you asked for sume support (or otherwise) here it is.

My views on singarounds/playarounds are well known.Having loads of experiance both as a performer/participator and as some one who has had the pleasure of running a few singarounds/playarounds I know how very difficult it is to satisfy everyone who wants a "go".At festivals you have an even harder task as there are more people there and amongst them will be people who you are not aware can do anything. When you have a large gathering of people there will always be some people who feel that they are being excluded.Yes, I have heard the critism at the festival levelled at certain MCs.My answer to those people always is,if you feel you are being left out have a quiet word with the MC when he or she goes to the bar, or for a comfort break and say you would like to sing/play.Trust me it works!!!

Another idea is,why leave everthing to the poor old MC?It is your session, whats wrong with giving the poor person a drag out now and again by reminding him/her that some one hasnt been given a chance? That is something I do on a regular basis. And yes, that works as well!!

So I say poo to the begrudgers and lets have a little positive support for the vollunteers who make an excellant job of KEEPING MUSIC LIVE!!!!

Sunday afternoon sesh was great Pete. You ran it well. There are a number of schools of thought on ways of running a sin a round. Round the room in order certainly works and stops people being miffed at being left out the down side is sometimes you'll get a run on unacoompanied male shanty singers (or the like) and as well people arriving late. The method you used of 'cherrypicking' is betterer but harder to administer. One year at whitby I did the evenibg session that way for the first time round then reverted to the old method and I think it worked really well that time. You will Pete regardless always have miffed folks ,but hey being in charge means you can be a Benevolant Despot asort of nice Il Duce or Furher !!

I don't think you would leave anyone out, intentionally, Pete but then I wasn't there and don't sing anyway. If you did then it would have to have been down to the singers not identifying themselves as such.( but since you can read minds anyway that should not have been too much of a hinderence and you should have known better!).

I was in Nellies (small back room) on sunday afernoon with one or two others and I noticed something which always pisses me off. We were joined by 3 very tallented lady singers and we gave them time to sing and listened quietly and appreciativly to their singing. But both Colin Thompson and I (on seperate occasions) played solo slow airs during which these very tallented ladies talked loudly. So (and yes I know this has been discussed on other threads but I have as yet to recieve an understandable explaination)can somebody please tell me why singers (not all Ossonflags) expect silence yet don't give the same curtesy to musicians?

Thank you for your comments, Bassic and Raggytash.

I'm speaking as somebody who runs regular sessions in this area, and had the honour of hosting the singaround on Sunday afternoon in the Sun Inn. As the first time I have done this, I must say I found it a very difficult task, as anybody else who has run a festival singaround will know. It's not as easy as it looks.

Anyone who was there will know I spent the afternoon scanning the extremely busy pub to see who may want to sing, and even approaching and asking people. Its not so easy when you don't know most of the people in the room, and I am thankful to those people who helped me by pointing out known singers.

I tried extremely hard to ensure that nobody was left out, and everyone who wanted to sing got the chance, to the point where I became a little unpopular with some of my regular singers by making them wait too long.....(sorry Maggie!)

I certainly would hate to think that anybody felt left out, and if they did, perhaps it would help if in future they identified themselves as singers rather than hovering in the background hoping to be noticed. The accusation that people seemed to be in exclusive little cliques, I sincerely hope, did not apply at my Session?? I hope to be backed up on this one.

Comments Jim? From an expert in this field?

Thoroughly enjoyed it, even the thunder & lightening Sunday a.m. The session in the food tent Sat night was not dominated by anyone, there was a nice mix of songs & tunes unlike Friday night when it appeared to be an impromptu concert given by some YOUNG (we like to see that) very able musicians to the exclusion of everyone else!! The guitar thrashers were just being given a chance to see if they were going to do anything coherent! Mrs Duck, Noreen, Willa & Hazel? (scottish lady) were in very fine voice, there were some good fiddle players, nice dulcimer & box & lots of other nice people we didn't know. Unfortunately one can't please all of the people all of the time, but I very much enjoyed Sat night/Sun morning food tenting.
I agree with Noreen about Cara, such a shame this excellent band who write lovely tunes weren't appreciated in the Moulder's.

Oombanjo and I met with the BERFF organisers last night for a post mortem on how the fringe and the festival had worked in their first year together. Apart from a few obvious niggles (some of them aired here already)we were pretty happy that the spirit of PVFF had largely survived the transformation into the fringe and that both the festival proper and the fringe had fed each other pretty well in terms of people switiching between festival and fringe events quite freely.

We are now hopeful that the programme next year will contain all of the fringe evnts and will be free. As you know, this depended on advertising revenue from the pubs which, apart from the Sun, was not forthcoming this year. However, we have already signed up the Sun, Hodgson's, Nellies and Tiger and are expextant of getting Foresters& Beehive committed soon. We haven't approached Oddies and Moulders yet because of holidays but we are sure that they won't let us down.

It has been proposed that we try and organise a Mudcat get together as part of the fringe next year and Oombanjo is going to approach one or two people about that soon.

Another idea that has come out of the pubs is to look at a weekend "Celtic Festival" in the winter based mainly on sessions in a small number of pubs (Sun, hodgson's, Oddies?)and maybe a couple of booked acts in the evenings. Any thoughts on that?

Roger

Nah, Linda, the inference was that when people spot you (trainspotters/anoracky weirdo types) they'll run the other way...!

Sorry for not saying hello to everyone there- I did my best!

...you all apear to be in gangs to the exclusion of others... I'm sorry if that was the appearance that was given, but it was not the case. It was my first time at the Beverley festival and I took the opportunity of seeing as much as possible of the different venues, often on my own.

I certainly would have greeted an unknown mudcat t-shirt if I had seen it... I didn't get to the Oddfellow's session (apart from waving through the door), so maybe didn't get to see you, GUEST.

I promise to always wear my Mudcat badge in future (and/or t-shirt) and also promise to be nice to anyone who says hello. :0)

Feedback on the fringe:
I thought it was very good indeed, great concerts and singarounds in friendly pubs. I did wonder though about the pub which was the Friday venue for Cara (Moulder's Arms?). Cara played beautifully as ever, but I think there were only four people in the venue who were at all interested in them being there (including me and Mrs Duck!) The drinkers at the bar carried on talking regardless, except for shouting out requests for the Wild Rover...

I think that 'Guest' has a valid point. I know it's up to each and everyone of us to join in but sometimes at small venues like pubs and clubs you can feel a bit excluded. I certainly felt that at Beverley a few years ago, sometimes I felt that I was intruding, I know that's obviously not the case. The other thing is that although people may seem like 'good eggs' when on 'the net' they may be 'trainspotters/anoracks/strange weirdo's etc' when you meet them in the flesh. I think I'll buy a Mudcat tee shirt tho' and if you see me wearing it ... please don't talk to me ....(only kidding)

I think it is a little unfair to comment on the etiquette of sessions in this thread. Especially the informal and ad-hoc gatherings in the food tent!! A reminder to those organising programmed sessions about being inclusive, especially to those faces that are not so familiar, is always usefull, but please acknowlege that it is not an easy task in a regular weekly/monthly session (plenty of threads on that tipic!!) and VERY difficult to get it exactly rite in a busy and bustling festival. "Well done" I say to those who put themselfs forward to organise/lead sessions, those at Beverley that I know personally would, without exception, always do there best to be inclusive, (untill they fall over from beer poisonong that is:-)

I have to agree with some of 'guests' comments and with that in mind I feel I must add my comments. I was there with a dance team (My first time @ Beverley) and could only go to evening events.
Much of this thread has been about the fringe. I go to a fest to see the artists and maybe do a bit of singing and playing.
I would not have bought tickets to see the Line up at this years fest. On Fri I managed 10 mins of Chumbawumba, Then came out to wait for the late night event with Phil Cunningham & Aly Bain etc (Wonderful). The main Sat night 'World Music' concert was a big turn off for me, I went on a pub tour following a rapper side.
Late on, I went into a session in the food tent and having plucked up courage to have a go, I waited for a lull in the proceedings (there was a a couple of guitars being thrashed at the other end of the tent by people completely oblivious to what was going on), and started a tune, only to be told off for not waiting until the they ( The guitar thrashers) had finished. This from someone who had dominated the proceedings up until then

I was in most venues over that fantastic weekend (appearing with Pthe H,joint folk club running and at all the singarounds were everyone was given a chance to contribute,in particular at the Oddfellows session on the sunday, were Jim clearly asked several times was there any one who wanted to sing etc. I did not get the impression any one was getting ignored/excluded.

I enjoyed Beverley and met many mudcatters that I hadn't met before but must have missed Guest. If you are not willing to identify yourself online are you sure you want to be met?
I had only on complaint about the festival and that was the arrangements for the children's events on Sunday which had been on the field on the Saturday and appeared to be free. On Sunday they were put into the leisure centre hall due to rain even though it was hot and dry by mid morning - no notification so my kids sat for nearly an hour waiting. When we wen to the leisure centre to check times we were told of the move and that it would be £2.50 each (£7.50) for the remaining hour. Needless to say I didn't pay and had two very upset 3 year olds!

The good lady Duck and myself have too much to organise in general. We look forward to someting such as the Beverley Fringe as a chance to just chill-out. The field where we camped was an ideal play area for our twins. Having youngsters restricts what can be attended, for various reasons, including the fact that they can get restless in long sessions or concerts. It is a pain in the neck if you have to pay a lot of money to go to a concert, then are unable to stay in it because the Littlies are bored. Having a pub which opens onto an enclosed field is a godsend to us.
I certainly introduced myself to anyone who apeared to be a Mudcatter. And I met a few ones I had not previously crossed paths with.
Oombanjo - did you find the Blue Clicky to the Honking Duck, which I left somwhere ? If not - here it is again http://www.honkingduck.com/ . (Any news about the proposed occasional American Old-Time Music session at Nellies?)
Looking forward to a Fringe next year.
Quack!
Geoff the Duck.

Sorry spotted no-one in a Mudcat T Shirt except Mrs Duck -I didn't go around in a little gang with anyone!Food tent was appalling and overpriced. Some nice friendly fringe sessions in Hodgsons and Nellies which ,ask me think GUEST you were in the wrong place at the wrong time! -

Guest - sorry I didnt see an unhappy catter t-shirt walking around at Oddfellows else I would have said Hi
I dont know most catters only being new to this place but I have found them very friendly

I didnt go near the food tent - out of my price bracket but most people seem to have been disappointed and wanted the scouts back

I thought it was interesting on Saturday afternoon that I could have sat in the car park and enjoyed the sights and sounds of the concert in the festival hall thinggy without having to be hot and bothered inside. Got a bit cofused by the programme only having half the fringe events listed but I understand why that happened

basically had a great weekend but I am now really sorry that GUEST felt so excluded - sorry mate - will try harder next time (with a carnation and I promise I will say hi)

I was there Food Tent CRAP
Why was Eliza Carthy on late Sunday afternoon and Sunday nightI would have loved to see her but had to travel home this is not the first time Beverley Festival in my opinion has kept the Headline acts back.

I am not moaning I am observing
I am a frequent guest here and would have liked to meet some mudcatters but you all apear to be in gangs to the exclusion of others I was in the oddfellows in a mudcat T shirt and no one wanted to know me although I tried to strike up conversations.
Case in point the thread is about what did you enjoy at beverley and has developed onto a chums meeting place oomabanjo has asked for feedback and has been ignored.

Get the thread back on track and think sometimes people with a small voice do attend mudcat festivals

Nice to see what the 'proper' festival was like after my first visit to Beverley for the brilliant 'Peoples Voice' Fringe-only Folk Festival last year. Shame about the ghost walk not happening as there were about 15 of us waiting - maybe next year.

The only non-fringe event I attended was the final concert. Eliza Carthy etc very good, but I thought the sound was cranked up far too high for the Lindisfarne set. Stuffed rolled up balls of tissue paper in my ears but we gave it up as a bad job in the end as the hall was pretty hot too! Rest of concert good though.

Well we have so many Johns in our Tuesday and Sunday sessions that we are all thinking of changing our names to John for simplicity (there was a Monty Python sketch about Australia in which eveyone was called Bruce).

Sir Rog - mucchos apologeticos amigos - no good me multitasking - you got called John by mistake on my earlier missive - my daughter was talking to me at the time and you turned into the boy in her class who isnt as good at her at reading - I can imagine the scene you in a class of five year olds with a fringed hat trying to read real books instead of beer mats! Sorry again Rog. I guess its all the worry over MCFAT's forthcoming duel

New to Mudcat site but not new to Beverley. ...Fantastic Fringe! Such a shame we can't get to two places at one time (or 3 or 4). I enjoyed it wherever I was ... but gather I missed some excellent sessions where I wasn't!
Looking forward to seeing Rogers new HAT!. Thanx to PTH for 'fun on friday'. Thanx to The Sun Inn too.
Marquee sessions are a great way to START the day!
I'm off to Warwick, maybe I'll see you there... can't get a pass for Cleckheaton...do enjoy yourselves (no doubt about that)

I agree with bring back the venture scouts for a start Briony and her sis had nice lady bumps. Perhaps Paul you should have said sweat instead of sweet !! As for a divorce perhaps you should be challenged to a duel as well. Will try and get Ray & Johnny back by severely berating them at Whitby !!. Only complaint I have is perhaps there winae room for two sing a rounds on Friday but hey....lets not fight.

Well I thought this year was bloody fantastic too. And I got engaged to MC Fat's wife, I'm just waiting for her double divorce to come through.

Anyway, about the Festival.

Yup, brilliant follow up to last year's wonderful fringe weekend.

Only real complaints,
1. Some of the rooms at the pub venues were a bit small

2. The Sun couldn't get an extension on Sunday night.

3. The campsite tea tent.
Why cheap chemical-rich chicken in brown sauce? Why not bacon butties?
Really slow service at breakfast. Badly organised although the young guy serving on Sunday was working really hard.
No tomato ketchup on Sunday morning.
Shut early on Sunday night.

No-one has done it better than the scouts in their last few years before they driven out by the great god 'profit', and no,it really isn't rose-tinted specs.

So, pretty good all round, but let's keep it to a weekend. There are other really good week-long festivals; but Beverly's strength has always been that it's short, sweet and very very friendly.

And bring back the Barnsley boys.

Apologies for anyone who turned up to do the ghost walk on Saturday evening. The guy who runs it got mixed up.

He did, however, turn up to do the historical walk on Sunday as arranged and did apologise to those who had turned up in vain the previous evening.

does that mean my marriage to MCFAT is not legal?

oh well, it was good whilst it lasted Jim - btw glad I could help with the work problem

anyway - whoever I am married to I had a good weekends singing and some nice falling down water
(and for your information husbands numbers 1 & 3 I was genuinely ill on Saturday half my staff have been off this week so it wasnt a hangover or bad beer at the Odds or Sun Friday night.)

Sir J it was nice to put a face to a name and I realy enjoyed the fringe it was my first time in Beverley for 22 years - brought back a few memories - I might even come back if you'll let me!
