Subject: IAN DURY From: GUEST,JC1GIBBS@HOTMAIL.COM Date: 26 Jun 03 - 05:16 AM Very tenuous link to folksong words, I know, but does anyone know a site where you can see ID'S (NOT Ian Duncan-Smith) lyrics? Somebody out there other than me may like Ian as well as folk; and, besides, weren't Chas and Dave once considered suitable for the Cambridge folk featival? |

Subject: RE: IAN DURY From: GUEST,jc1g Date: 26 Jun 03 - 10:46 AM Thanks, Ms Morticia. I have been after that for ages. I expected it to appear, eventually, on ID's website, but it never did. If you're interested, the sax player who replaced Davey Payne has made some great modern jazz records, which even folkies might like. I do, anyway. |
Subject: RE: IAN DURY From: Helen Date: 27 Jun 03 - 03:10 AM There are quite a few Dury fans here. We had a thread about him after he died. Try doing a Forum search in the box labelled "Lyrics & Knowledge Search" on the top right of this page. Just type [Ian Dury] with the square brackets in the search field. Helen |

Subject: RE: IAN DURY From: C-flat Date: 27 Jun 03 - 12:28 PM I seem to remember reading about The Blockheads recently. Have they just released a new C.D.? Ian Dury was a favourite of mine and I thought his band were overlooked sometimes because of Durys presence. |

Subject: RE: IAN DURY From: GUEST,Betty woz 'ere Date: 11 Apr 07 - 04:18 AM I grew up in the folk world and always thought the reason for Ian Dury and the Blockheads acceptance in it was down to his love of music hall. The folk music hall link is strong and why I visited this site.. I am however above all a Blockheads fan and I can't help wanting to promote them. The Blocks are still going strong and are bringing out there second album this year to coincide with their 30th Anniversay!!Check their web site www.theblockheads.com ! Happy music making people. |

Subject: RE: IAN DURY From: HipflaskAndy Date: 11 Apr 07 - 09:24 AM Here's a folk 'connection' Ian was one of Nic Jones fave artists.... ...he's especially fond of 'Hit me with your rhythm stick' One of his top tracks of all time... ...says his guitar style was influenced by it! I just love that notion. - cheers - Dunc |
Subject: RE: IAN DURY From: Grimmy Date: 11 Apr 07 - 09:35 AM Sometime in the 70's I heard a band playing in a park in Hull (can't remember the occasion). As I got closer, I could hear the singer going on about girls showing their knickers. Guess who! I hadn't heard of them at that time so presumably it was before they were famous. I loved them then and I've loved them ever since. |
Subject: RE: IAN DURY From: Big Al Whittle Date: 12 Apr 07 - 09:15 AM There is wonderful strand of showman/performance poets in rock music, and I believe it is very similar in spirit to folk music. The late Alex Harvey had something of this about him and maybe John Otway. The Liverpool poets and John Cooper Clarke. Nic Toczek of Bradford is also in this tradition. A fantastic talent. |
Subject: RE: IAN DURY From: Betsy Date: 12 Apr 07 - 11:24 AM I must second those in this thread who have praised the Blockheads . I went to see Ian and the Blockheads in Rotterdam (no not Rotherham ),and as good as Ian was, the BH's were sensational - what a sound. I don't care for Jazz and music without roots, as opposed to constructive melodies, but the blockheads bridged the genres perfectly to give a sound all of their own, delivered by obviously first-class musicians enjoying themselves, at the same time as punching it out to the audience. RIP Ian - Roll on Blockheads |
