Eric Bogle will be appearing at The Trinity Arts Centre, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, at 8pm on 31st July, 2003. A fantastic songwriter and excellent performer, he's definitely not to be missed. TICKETS ARE A SNIP AT A MERE £8 EACH - the TAC is a lovely 200-seat theatre in a converted church and well worth a visit.

Come on people, lets make Eric's 12,000-mile journey from Adelaide worthwhile!

Johnny

He'll also be at Saddleworth festival on the 18th July (sorry to take over the thread!!) - this will be his 1st gig of his UK tour.

Although the tickets are a bit more (£10), on the concert there's also Jim McDonald, Stanley Accrington, Waite Collective, Copper Kettle, and LocTup Together.

I can't wait to see him - I am definitely not going to be on the Festival Office at that time!

I was hoping to catch Eric in Watford on 24th July (my birthday) but I'm now going to be in Ireland.

Fortunately we've booked to catch him in Listowel in early August. We're running a minibus 35 miles from my village.

Can't wait.

Thanks for hi-jacking my thread guys!

Shambles - Dorset's a long (like 250-mile) drive from Lincolnshire, maybe us Yellow-Belly Sheep-Shaggers would be better off going to Gainsborough to see him! Also, he's not an Australian singer-songwriter, he's Scottish. Just lives in Adelaide! I agree, however, that he's Legendary!

Fionn - try the Trinity Arts Centre Box Office, 01427-676655. Debit/Credit Cards accepted.

Everybody - Eric's a superstar and whichever venue you choose to go see him he's worth every penny (especially the Freebie one - lucky buggers!). He's a nice guy for a chat, and he answers his fan-mail in his own fair hand. Go see him - I insist.

Johnny.

Good night at Alford last night (apart from the backwards-playing record of course!).

Linda, you're a lucky lass. He's a really nice guy and a great performer. It'll be a hoot.

We need to sell 200 to fill the theatre, and Gainsborough folks are notoriously tight-arsed, but we've got a lot of nice friends from Lincoln, Louth, Kiveton and other nether-regions so hopefully we'll do OK.

Have a great night - I know you will.

Fantastic, Wonderful, Amazing, Thoughtful! Cottingham was treated to an ace performance by Eric and John Munro, (security, CD Sales and all other support tasks). All those who can MUST take the chance to see and hear the superb delivery of original songs by the touring Scots. Cottingham has already had enquiries for 2006!

I had mixed feelings about his flat-picking accomplice, whom I'd not seen before. His vocal harmonising was not always well judged and though he plays a mean guitar (and mandolin) I thought it was sometimes intrusive. He did however have his moments, and looked to do a roaring trade selling CDs in the interval.

Surely a better job could have been done promoting the event? It's a fairly small venue (so ideally matched to Bogle's low-key style), yet many of the seats were empty. For my daughter and me it was an hour's journey and well worth it; there must have been hundreds more who would have thought the same.

My daughter got the great man's signature on the only piece of paper she had handy - a print-out of the DigiTrad lyrics for "The band played Waltzing Matilda."

Oh, and by the way, SJ, how did that "h" creep into "he"?

Fionn, like you, many people had driven 40 - 50 miles each way last night. Far more fell into that category than could describe themselves as local. That is an abiding problem around here! The Arts Centre have a mailing list of several thousand and anyone who has booked a ticket for a folk event ever before would have been sent a brochure. (Actually, there weren't that many empty seats, only about 50, I think))
I'm with you about John Munroe - his instrumental work was good (albeit a bit country for my taste) but his harmonies were hard work!

I suppose there are no easy answers Sooz. And for all that Bogle's stature in the folk community is beyond argument, he does have a bit a reputation for being only fair-to-middlin as a performer of his own songs. As far as I'm concerned, he could be the worst singer/performer on earth, and I'd still want to catch any opportunity to see the guy who wrote those songs.

Fionn - oops, sorry about the 'h' in 'he'!! Must be my Grammer Skool Edgercayshun creeping in!

You're so right about the empty seats. Very frustrating. Sooz is right in that the vast majority of attendees at any event in Gainsborough are from out-of-town, even out-of-county (thanks to you for making the effort!). It's even more off-urinating because the most common moan we hear from Gainsborough's Finest is that there's "nowt to do in this effin' town". None are so blind as they who will not see.

However, if the 140-or-so who came enjoyed the concert, that's good. I know I did.

Just a comment about John campbell Munro - I'd lay my pension on his excess volume problem, (both instrumental and vocal) lying firmly in the hands of the gentlemen in the sound-booth. Perhaps if they'd concentrated more and talked less.............
