The Kingston Trio for years have sung a song called "I'm going Home".

"I'm Going Home"----as done by the Kingston Trio was written by FRED GEIS from Sacramento, California---early 1960s. The song climbed the charts to number ONE almost as soon as it came out. THEN it left the charts as quickly as it had arrived. Someone noticed that the tune for this song was the same as one Gounod had used in his opera FAUST. Later, it was used in a musical Broadway show about early Israel. It was the tune of the title song, "Land Of Milk And Honey".

I sang it on and off for about 40 years. FRED HOLSTEIN recorded it in the late 1960s on a very fine compilation album of Chicago folksingers who played at Earl Pionke's great Wells Street folk bar called The Earl Of Old Town.

Also on this album was Steve Goodman's first ever recording of his famous song "The City Of New Orleans".

I'm sure a remember the " time for the going home song" from a singer called Jim James who I used to catch at a folk club in New Brighton, near Liverpool back in the 70s. I thought Jim wrote the song. He did move to somewhere on the American East Coast. He was a fine blues/folk singer and a fine songwriter.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm sure it's the " time to going home song" that I'm trying to recall. I remember Jim James( mentioned by Joe Moran ), but don't recall him singing the song. He used to play a 12 string guitar made by Liverpool guitar maker Stan Francis, who also made one for Pete Seeger back in the 60s,

Jim James was a resident of the Bothy Folk Club in Southport, Lancs for some time until the late eighties. He now lives in New England (Maine, I think) and spends the summer as a deckhand and singer on a schooner.

He wrote Going Home Song as a going home song for the club, about some of the local natural sights - the fox on the dunes, the geese on the shore etc. On his periodic visits to the club since then he has been know to sing it. He has been amazed from time to time to hear it sung all over the place, no-one knowing that he wrote it!

I've got all the words at home somewhere, if anyone's interested. Hang on, let's see if I can remember them.....

In the night sky you can hear the geese cry
And it's time for the going home song
The fox on the dune crying up at the moon
And it's time for the going home song

Chorus:
Travellers the wide world all over
Let your star follow you through the night.
With the storm clouds at bay
At the end of the day
When it's time for the going home song.


There are two or three more verses. I'll try & remember to look 'em out,

It's not "Lord I feel I'm going home" is it? -everything I done was wrong an I feel like going home. I know Ive seen it recently, and sometime in the past I've sung it, but it's gone like smoke on the water. I have a feeling Eric Clapton did it.

Schantieman's got it, I think. This is a song that Cliff Haslam (of Connecticut)sings wonderfully (as he does MOST songs) as a closer at one of my favorite music gatherings. I've done some research in to Jim James. Here moved from the south of England up to Merseyside in the mid-60s and got involved in the local folk music scene. For a while he was teamed up with Raphael Callaghan and they appeared a number of times on Alexis Korner's BBC radio shows. In 1969, they recorded a couple of tracks for a Liberty blues compilation "Gasoline". In the early 90s Jim travelled the world and ended up settling in maine. The " Going Home " song reached there ahead of him via Ian Woods. There is a featured on Jim on www.mainewindjammercruises.com Just click on "The Company" and then on "store" and "music". There is a cd available which contains " Time for the going home song"

Here's my memory of Ian's version, but I haven't heard it for a long time (and I don't seem to have it anywhere), so it may not be exact. I also can't remember whether the ending I've labelled Last was only for the last chorus or whether it was for all. Perhaps all this can be resolved when the words are posted.

When posting the tune I should have added that "Not Last" and "Last" as repeat markers are non-standard. I think a repeat number is required by the standards (currently in flux but with hopes for a new version soon). abcm2ps accepts it as is and does what you'd like it to do (as it so often does), abcmidi shrieks when it gets to the first repeat.

The 'time we were getting home' bit is in all verses but we usually do it again in the last verse.

('We' being 'Gusto' who haven't sung together for about three years). I think Jim does it like that too, but he didn't do it on is visit this year or last so I really can't remember!

Hi folks: I've just had a phone call from a "Mudcatter" in OR who's introduced me to this website.
First off ... I am honored in your interest in The Going Home Song. Secondly, it was fun to see how the thread developed and to note the folk process in action via the internet! I still play the Stan Francis 12-string that was mentioned ( always known as Bertha ! ).... STILL sing the song when the times's right but usually on 6-string. For me the song wrote itself in basically one session ( which is unusual for me but magic when it happens )...and actually fullfilled an ambition of mine which was to have a song pass into the tradition and to hear it sung WITHOUT people knowing where it came from or who wrote it.....in other words, through the oral tradition. So the song was at least 15 years old before it was recorded... and then in Polish. The version on "WINDJAMMER DAYS" was done in '93 with Pam Taylor and David Dodson on 2nd guitar. I think the song works because of it's familiarity, repeat lines, and the opportunity for harmony. So the variations are out there to the extent that I'm happy to put down the version as she was conceived !
