The Watersons literally brought tears to my eyes.....such was the charge of emotion in the atmosphere.
The other thing that brought tears to my eyes on Sunday was Linda Kelly singing the "Peridot" in the maritime session. Thanks Linda. Beautiful!!

Hi alio and all at the Saddleworth super drome
I was shanghied by her indoors for a work detail so didn't make it.
I was so glad that the weekend went well and look forward to coming to visit next year.
The Poms had a great time thank's from them as well ( they are talking about a visit again next year)
I must remember to bring cheese for the cheese orgy and hide my sun glasses in case the blue meanies are watching.

Thanks so much all of you - I've had yet ANOTHER weep reading all your messages!! (My first one was when Strawhead sang my favourite song "The Lass That Loves A Sailor") It was an amazing weekend - lots of special moments, as Noreen says, which we won't forget in a hurry.

Re the Hiring Fair, John Prentice has already had a call from a punter wanting to book a spot at next years!! And I agree that we need folk club / feastival organisers etc to turn up - I always make a point of going to Whitby's, and I did book someone following that (Duncan McFarlane)

And thanks for coming along - the best organisation in the world is no use without all of you coming along to make the weekend for us.

Thanks AliO (and the committee) for all your hard work. In preparation for my 3 hour journey home, my final act on leaving the camp site at 11am this morning was to have a pee in the gents toilet of the rugby club changing room. Who should I meet there mopping it out? None other than Geoff, AliO's partner! Now, that's commitment!
Well done everyone, enjoyed it all and missed loads of it I would have enjoyed if I hadn't been double-booked. I cannot say better than that! See you again next year.

Wonderful weekend!

Singing Together workshop went very well, I thought. Had just the right number of people, enjoyed reliving old songs (though several in our booklet had interesting verses that must have been excised from school versions of the songs!!!). Can we do it again next year, Ali please?

Weather beautiful all weekend until it came time to put tent down this morning and the heavens opened- ah well. Makes one realise what a beautiful part of the world Saddleworth is, when you can see the view and not hurry from venue to venue with head down wrapped in waterproofs *grin*

Stayed over Sunday night to enjoy the Survivors' Sing at the Cross Keys- that was a night and a half. Such singing!! Agreed, Bob, When all Men Sing sung by the whole room, followed by Scowie saying that it wasn't his song, it is our song...
A very special moment.

great hiring fair. found it after all ....at the museum on saturday .what a line up those who were not there missed a great show and FREE at that. John prentice did a great job as always and poor Dia could have done with a bit of help but that did not stop me have a great time.
the mev cameron band ..should go far
brass tacks good but wanted to liven up a bit .
the whisle set brilll ..helped by having a few encouraging friends in the audiencecertainly livened the audience
half of taggart and wright ..well if the other half is as good cant wait for more.
john and ailsa .classical voice seemed out of place and happier singing the blues.
jan fielding ..needs to smile soory jan but you did not look happy
the wood works spent too long getting sorted and not enough playing.
es and chris .. good for clubs i think but chris needs to project more and not let es dominate she has a good voice so use it more.
the others well good singer..the bloke with the guitar at the start .probably would have done better had he been second on.

Would I go back for more damn right I would.
Do it again next year but get some agents/club promoters in to book the acts after all thats what they are there for. thats why its called a hiring fair.

As far as I am aware there is not a Hiring Fair at Saddlworth, I may be wrong but I've not heard of one. However that should not put you off coming, Alio and the gang are very eager to promote new talent and some of the guests are fairly new to the scene. If you make yourself know to them I am sure they will listen with interest to you perform at one of the folk club sessions or singarounds.

Hmmmmmmmm What cheese do I like ............ Well Cows cheese, sheeps cheese, goats cheese, Buffalo cheese, smoked, blue, hard, soft ..........any cheese basically, except cheese with bits of fruit stuck in it. I've got some Welsh Goats cheese and some Dovedale and I'll see today id I can get some Lincolnshire Poacher, possibly the best English Cheese there is (except Poachers Imp, what you can't get round here)

Tell Daddiekins it's a cracking little festival, big enough to get sone top turns, (have you seen the line up this year) but still small enough to be intimate. We have been from the start and if it's possible it just gets better and better (pay me later Alio).
Daddiekins just need to follow the M62 out of Hull unbtil he reaches Junc 22, down the hill to Denshaw, follow the signs to Delph and then to Uppermill about 4-5 miles off the motorway.

It's very much as Sue says - there's also the Young Poets workshop, more facepainting (in the Craft Fair) and a stilt walker (in the Park). Littlies are welcomed everywhere, so you won't have any probelms in that respect.

At least the weather sounds a little better than last year - could it be any worse?

Mrs Duck I am doing some stories and singing for kids on Saturday morning from I think 11.00 and thats followed by John and I doing music for kids with the instruments out and about for them to have a try with its in a room in the museum - both sessions were popular last year ( sorry young quack I dont have a banjo so you cant pretend to be your dad!)

I will probably bring my face paints and books and maybe some playdough/ colouring sheets if I know you are coming so you can be sure there will be something for yours to do.Dont know if my kids will be there or not. I am not running a creche though as there is only me there for my session and I am not sure who is stewarding

we're not doing anything Sunday this year as we only had one child turn up on the Sunday last year

Been in Leicester on business a couple of days, so not been able to read the messages recently.

8 Pints - there may be some one over the weekend who could give you more information - possibll Mick, one of our committee, or John Howarth (of the Tinkers).

Sorry about any wrong info - blame it on the gammy leg / wine / work / stress / festival (please delete whichever!!) the Workshop is definitely on Saturday, and as far as my memory seves me it is in the festival lounge, at the back of the Craft Fair.


We can't say if the Bogle concert will be sold out or not, although it's looking that way. But with all the comps for artists, stewards etc. it's very hard to get actual numbers in advance.

Does anyone know what the weather forecast is, or don't I need to know?

Saturday is far better, of course.

R&WR, if you wish to bring along your Singing Together books we'd love to see them- I'm bringing Sue vG's collection, and there will be others there too.

The cute Ms Theresa Tooley has put together a booklet for use at the workshop, so no excuse for not joining in!

Mrs Duck and anyone else who doesn't know, Singing Together and Time and Tune were (still are?) put together by the BBC for use of primary schools; a radio programme accompanied by booklets of songs. You learn the songs and sing along with the people on the radio :0)

Interesting to us because traditional/folk songs were heavily represented; it's where I learned such songs as Ye Banks and Braes and The Keeper (which I've since learned is not really about hunting deer at all!)

The vanGaalenvan was a haven (havan?!) of cheese and late night jollity when the 4 Fools powers-that-be intended us to go to bed at midnight- no jollity in case the neighbours complained...

However, Saddleworth has the excellent Moor & Coast facility (with or without boating lake) for late night revelry and bacon butties- room for more participants than even the vGs hotel on wheels!

Get there early on Friday folks (pitch your tent later if need be!) for our:

Singing Together Workshop at 5.30 - 7.00 in the Festival Lounge (back of the Civic Hall).

A group of us around the kitchen table at last year's Whitby festival gathered together a long list of songs we had learned at school from the Singing Together and Time and Tune schemes. Lots of happy memories... and Ali suggested that others might like to travel down memory lane with us, so has given us space for a workshop.

Come along and join in- or suggest ones we've forgotten!

I was discussing the source of a song 'A-begging I will go' last night with friends, and learnt that the version I was intereseted in was collected from Becket Whitehead, Delph.

A google search identified a number of other songs he was associated with (Gallant Poacher & Four Loom Weaver).

Nick - can't get access to the Civic unfortunately until Friday morning - it costs us an arm, a leg, and other various important bits of the anatomy as it is!!

Wiggy - I can't promise anything I'm afraid. Saddleworth isn't a huge festival by any means - we don't even have enough venues now for what we want to do! However, we may have spots on 2 concerts owing to one artist possibly having to dry off because of family illness. Do you want to give me a call on 01457 870391. Alio - its the last run down to the festival now - I am really looking forward to trudging through the mud and rain and swimming on the newly formed campsite pool whilst watching the Moor and Coast Rowing team practice in the early morning

Ali,
I've obtained a domestic CCTV survellience type camera with sound and will bring a small TV but it will be practical to set it up before hand to see a)if it functions, b) we can find somwhere to install it, c) consider the H & S implications, wires etc.
As I said it may not be practical to set one up, do we have access to the civic centre on Thursday night, if so we can give it a trial run, it may be that it only picks up sound from the back of the room. If someone else has a TV I can let you have the camera before then

Yes Ali, there will definitely be the Sunday evening sing again at the Keys - we daren't NOT have it (we even got calls following the weekend last year thanking us for the wonderful singing!!) I think Geoff's hoping to get it going around 7.30.

Nick - of course you have my permission! Re. the video link - that sounds far too technical for me - are you serious? Hopefully you'll be on the doors - or someone like you who knows what they're doing. We're expecting to be sold out for Eric's concert - that's a lot of people to control (400)!!!

Any chance at this late stage of a video link from the main stage to where the stewards are just outside the door, that way I get to see Eric Bogle too ! I would also assist in preventing people from trying to get through the doors when artistes are still singing. Oh by the way have I got your permission to sit on the sound guy who last year was up and down like a brides nightie.

it's one of my favourite festivals too
never thought I would ever recommend a conservative club but its a great and friendly venue
if you've never been make this the first year and you'll definitely go back
of course it wouldn't be the same without Ali......

8 Pints - I'll see you in the Festival Office when you pick up your camping pass. I think we have a really good campsite - I go to loads of festivals, and I hope I'm not biased when I compare ours pretty favourably.It's really pretty, with a river running through it (the alternative showers!!), a proper toilet and shower block, Moor and Coast late night food and song tent, and very close to all the venues.

Re. me leaving.....watch this space!!! Seriously though, we do need more people - any suggestions?

Mrs Rabbit, Alio announced her retirement from the chair some time ago, she has put an awful lot of work in over the years from when she and others took over the reins from Moggy Moger. I think she is quite adamant that she is going to cede the chair, however knowing Ali I think she will find it hard not to get involved in some capacity.
As for being second I was unaware that she was about to duel, please enlighted me Bulstrode has been teaching me a greta deal lately

The camp site is about a 1 mile drive from the festivals venues and about a 5 minute walk back. This is because you have to go "round the houses" to get to it, but the pathway leads directly back to the village. I too have been there from the start and as Vince says the organisers have gone away each year and somehow manage to improve upon things, and this is from a great start.
I know a great deal of effort is put in by a relatively small team, thank you one and all we do appreciate it

Most of the info you need is on www.safra.org.uk (there is a mention of the camp-site). The local sports ground is used as the camp/caravan site which i'm sure will fit your 'monster' home. The site is near the centre of town (more-or-less) with a food tent aswell! It's a grand festival (bin to everyone and it gets better each year - in my 'umble opinion!)

Can anyone offer guidance on parking the motorcaravan during the festival?

Is there a campsite, and if so is it suitable for my 25' 'Leviathan'?

The map published on the festival web-site relates to the performance venues rather than campsite I think.
