Subject: Scot./Engl. trad tunes for lute - help

I am an English lutenist in possession of some lovely Scottish (and English) tunes in the Balcarres lute book, c. 1700. Many of the tunes are known to me as traditional, but I have no information on some of those I'd like to perform. Can anyone shed any light on the following titles? Some may be from Playford's publications, as indicated in the foreword ('The Division Violin', 1685, 'Apollo's Banquet', 1670, 'Original Scotch-Tunes', 1700 and 1701), but as I don't have them, I can't check. Here they are: 'Celia, that once was blest'; 'Prince's Air'; 'Lads of Gallowater'. The latter is not the same tune as the Scottish song that goes, "Braw, braw lads o' Galla Water / Bonnie lads o' Galla Water / I'll kilt my coats abune my knee / And follow my love through the water / Braw, braw lads", but the tune in Balcarres may be an alternative tune I am unaware of. Are there two songs, 'Lads of Gallowater' and 'Braw Lads of Gallowater'? Seems unlikely to me. Help, please.

lutenist, you will probably get more and faster responses by posting a separate thread for each tune with the tune title in the thread title. I've started the first one for you, just click HERE for the one on "Celia, that once was blest."

Good luck and welcome to the Mudcat!
