there's this song that's been plaguing me...real sharp,
clever lyrics on the subject of (i assume) a truly wretched
hangover. i heard it at an a capella sing at gottagetgon,
and a fellow at old songs told me the title of it was "roll
the old chariot along", but i know that can't be right, that's
the drop of nelson's blood song. totally different lyrics on
the DT. oy vey. can anybody help me? the only line that stayed
in my mind was:
"i couldn't eat my breakfast
i know because i tried"
sorry i know this is typical GUEST behavior, but i figure if you folks can't help me, nobody can.
danke

You may have heard Greg Clarke sing this at the Gottagetgon. I have a recording of him live at Cafe Lena, and the words are as follows. He calls it "Roll the Old Chariot Along."

A little bit of whisky won't do me any harm (3x)
And we'll all hang on behind

We'll roll the old chariot along (3x)
And we'll all hang on behind

Now the wages of sin they tell me is death
Like the grim retribution that fell on Macbeth
but the wages of gin is a terrible breath
Won't someone take me home

We'll roll the old chariot along (3x)
And we'll all hang on behind

I feel like a fish that has recently died
Or like the rind of a melon left at low tide
I can't eat my breakfast -- I know 'cause I've tried
Won't someone take me home

We'll roll the old chariot along (3x)
And we'll all hang on behind

A nip for the dog that bit you won't do you any harm (3x)
And we'll all hang on behind

We'll roll the old chariot along (3x)
And we'll all hang on behind

There may be a verse missing that I remember him singing n the past -- something about temples bulging. But it's a great song!

I think I might have remembered the last verse:

My head feels like lead, my temples they bulge
My tongue tastes like something I dare not divulge
It's always this way when I over-indulge
Won't someone take me home?

The poem is called "Hangover" by Phillip Rhinelander and I just adapted it to the song "Roll the Old Chariot" aka "Nelson's Blood".
