Subject: Lyr Add: TOWSER JENKINS From: Bill D Date: 04 Jul 03 - 04:39 PM "...Once I had a yaller dog, his name was Towser Jenkins. The butcher cut his tail off with a cleaver... Towser had his trademark on every cat in town, And when he spotted one, he'd never leave her. He wore his legs off stumpy, chasin' milk carts 'round the country. Had bunions on his knees from jumpin' ditches. Had all the hair wore off his ribs From chasin' cats around the corn cribs... But empty is the doghouse, Towsers poisoned. No more he'll look for liver down beside the Suwanee River, No more will boys baptize him in the sewer.. No more homeward will he wail, with ten cans tied to his tail.. For empty is the doghouse...Towser's poisoned." ...from a Folk Legacy album by Harry Tufts. (I hope that right!) |

I got me a sow and several other things, The sow took the measles and she died in the spring. What do you think I made of her hide? The very best saddle that you ever did ride, Saddle or bridle or any such thing, The sow took the measles and she died in the spring. What do you think I made of her nose? The very best thimble that ever sewed clothes. Thimble or thread or any such thing, The sow took the measles and she died in the spring. What do you think I made of her tail? The very best whup that ever sot sail, Whup or whup or any such thing, The sow took the measles and she died in the spring. What do you think I made of her feet? The very best pickles that you ever did eat, Pickles or glue or any such thing, The sow took the measles and she died in the spring. There may have been other verses but these are all I remember. Subject: Lyr Add: OLD BROWN DOG From: songs2play Date: 05 Jul 03 - 02:52 AM OLD BROWN DOG Ralph McTell That old brown dog sleeps in the rain Unless the sun has shone. That old brown dog is all alone, Since Old Bill been gone. And sleeping in the rain Only gives a dog a bad name. If Bill were alive Well I know he would decide To have the same thing done. That old brown dog he smells so bad, Say the people from the town. That old brown dog is almost lame, Someone should put him down. It would be an act of kindness, You know it's for the best. You bring a rope, bring a gun, And it'll all be over Before the dog can guess. Could an old brown dog have become wise Guessed they were all after him. His hearing was failing, and his eyes Were fast growing dim. On the day they came to kill him He sensed a rabbit on a log. Did anybody see a rabbit Chased across the meadows By an old brown dog. That old brown dog, tail wagging, As he laid himself down. It did not seam to matter, That the rabbit had long gone to ground. And there in the summer heat, His old heart ceased to beat And high above the meadow The skylarks singing as the spark went out. |

Subject: RE: Dead animal songs From: GUEST,celtaddict Date: 05 Jul 03 - 02:23 PM My other favorite term for the flat red mess is "Road Pizza" which arose from a bizarre "cheer" at Boy Scout camp. B: (louder) Vroom, vroom. ...and so forth louder and faster until the leader clapped his hands together, and all yelled in unison, "Road pizza!" |

Subject: RE: Dead animal songs From: Mr Red Date: 05 Jul 03 - 07:11 PM Oh what was that one with a chorus that tallied the huntin 'n shooting ".... two game wardens and a cow" with the adjectival addition or "purte bred Jersey" for the bovine on the closing chorus. Sounds like a Tom Lehrer song or a Woody Allen story - probably an amalgum "in the style of". Seem to remember the line about game wardens not being in season. I have a rabbit roadkill song - all the usual jokes in there. Not on my web site thought Todd the Toad is there as a "as heard" version. |

Subject: Lyr Add: THE CAT GOT DEAD (Heywood Banks) From: Chief Chaos Date: 05 Jul 03 - 10:38 PM There's also
THE CAT GOT DEAD
Oh, the cat got dead; we put him in a box
But in the middle of the night, a dog started sniffin’.
Well, throughout the house she has cat curiosities,
When the woman saw the cat, there began the pandemonium:
From the floor to counter and all around the kitchen,
Old John Duke drives a delivery route [After a pause, softly:] Yuck!
Oh, the cat got dead; we put him in a box * * *
It carries on until we find that the cat wasn't really dead merely "catatonic" (groan) and he gets chased by a dog out into the street where he gets run over...Then we start over with "the cat got dead". |
Subject: Lyr Add: NOBODY'S MOGGY'S LAND (Bob Kanefsky) From: Blackcatter Date: 06 Jul 03 - 12:05 AM I ran across this one (pun intentional) in the DT a couple of years back: NOBODY'S MOGGY'S LAND (No Moggy's Land) (Bob Kanefsky) Well, how d'ya do, old Moggy the Cat? I just noticed you landed where I almost sat. D'ya mind if I push you a bit to the side? I've been driving all day on the road where you died. You've been squashed like some butterfly pressed between glass Were you hit by a truck that was moving too fast? Did he slam on the brake as he saw you go past? Or, Moggy the Cat, did he step on the gas? CHORUS Did he honk the horn loudly? Did you stand your ground proudly? Did a shadow fall o'er ya as the truck mowed you down? Did your eyes glow in that fleeting darkness? Did the birds come and pick at your carcass? The ground squirrels and mice all seem happy today, The butterflies frolic; the hummingbirds play. A mockingbird sits there composing a dirge Till he finally yields to his scavenger urge. The robins and sparrows all join in the feast In their joyous relief that the terror has ceased. And the birds dance around you, not sad in the least, Like the Munchkins danced over the Witch of the East. Old Moggy the Cat, I still wonder why You road-kill look so damned surprised when you die. Did you think that some animal spirit survives? Did you really believe that a cat has nine lives? Well, if that is true, this is life Number Ten Getting ever more flat, spinning round now and then, As the cars run you over again and again And again and again and again and again! Copyright 1989 Bob Kanefsky; reprinted with permission Tune "No Man's Land," by Eric Bogle |
Subject: Lyr Add: THE HUNTING SONG (Tom Lehrer) From: Nigel Parsons Date: 06 Jul 03 - 04:17 AM Mr Red: TOM LEHRER REVISITED 8. The Hunting Song Almost every day during the hunting season you see at least one item in the newspapers about somebody who has shot somebody else, under the impression that he was a deer with a red hat, perhaps. Maybe a large flesh-colored squirrel. At any rate, it seems to me that this marks an encouraging new trend in the field of blood sports, and deserves a new type of hunting song which I present herewith. I always will remember, 'Twas a year ago November, I went out to hunt some deer On a morning bright and clear. I went and shot the maximum the game laws would allow: Two game wardens, seven hunters, and a cow. I was in no mood to trifle, I took down my trusty rifle And went out to stalk my prey. What a haul I made that day! I tied them to my fender, and I drove them home somehow: Two game wardens, seven hunters, and a cow. The law was very firm, it Took away my permit, The worst punishment I ever endured. It turned out there was a reason, Cows were out of season, And one of the hunters wasn't insured. People ask me how I do it, And I say "There's nothin' to it, You just stand there lookin' cute, And when something moves, you shoot!" And there's ten stuffed heads in my trophy room right now: Two game wardens, seven hunters, and a pure-bred Guernsey cow. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes *In the orchestral version of this song, the last two stanzas are repeated. Taken fron This site which seems to have all Tom Lehrer's songs with MIDIs Nigel |

Subject: RE: Dead animal songs From: Genie Date: 06 Jul 03 - 07:23 AM The Fox - The goose, of course, gets eaten. Froggy Went A Courtin' - Most versions end with the wedding party being swallowed up by a snake, etc. Armadillos Waltz - One verse of this is about "armadillo stew" after the "armadillos waltz on the highway late at night" and a truck comes along. El Burro - (Spanish) A lament for the town burro, who has died. Gallo Del Cielo - Lyrics here in the forum. Gallo Del Cielo is a fighting cock that kills many an opponent but finally meets his match. The Last Leviathan - OK, it's more about species extinction (actual or threatened) than about individual dead animals, but... Barney - Ian Tyson sang this song about having to "put down" a beloved horse. The Roadkill Connection - parody of "The Rainbow Connection" Old Dog Tray - Stephen Foster - I can't remember if Tray dies in the song or not. But since it's a Civil War era song, he's no doubt dead by now. ;) Kitty Popcorn - This is another Civil War era song, a real tear-jerker, about a dear departed kitty cat. |

We're off to the boondocks to murder the duck!" One of the lines in one verse is: "We don't know who shot him but the bugger's sure dead." Subject: Lyr Add: THE WIFE OF LINCOLNSHIRE From: Emma B Date: 07 Jul 03 - 01:44 PM As requested, - just because it's you Joe but I warn you it's not for the squeamish! THE WIFE OF LINCOLNSHIRE, collected from Peter Bones of Harbury 2001 as sung? by Pete (The Melodian Repairer and dog lover) Grassby There was a wife from Lincolnshire to market she did go She took her dog for company, across the ice and snow Returning from the market they were drenched in freezing rain So she put her dog in the microwave to dry it out again So she put her dog in the microwave to dry it out again A passer-by saw the cloud of smoke and called the fire brigade The fireman said 'Now here I am, I'm here to give you aid No need to make a statement, we know what you will say You put your dog in the microwave, it's the second case today' A veterinary surgeon kept a practice down the street The wife begged him to resurrect the blackened lump of meat The surgeon started laughing and guffawed 'This dog is wrecked If you put your dog in a microwave what more do you expect?' Her husband came from work that night and said 'Here I am Your cooking smells delicious, is it chicken, pork or lamb?' The wife began to tremble and a tear came to her eye 'I put the dog in the microwave just like a slice of pie!' She went to see a medium who charged a hefty fee She said 'We must communicate, this dog was dear to me' An ectoplasm dog appeared and wailing like a ghost Said 'You put the dog in the microwave, and frazzled it to toast' The neighbours were inquisitive and tactlessly enquired 'We haven't seen your doggy, has he recently expired?' The wife she trembled terribly and then began to howl' No, I put the dog in the microwave, when I should have used a towel' She sued the manufacturers of the oven she had bought 'The oven is too dangerous' she said in open court 'You did not read the manual' the lawyer said 'just see If you put a dog in the microwave, it voids the guarantee' The whole affair was featured in the early evening news The RSPCA complained of 'Serious Dog Abuse' The Chinese correspondent sent a simple message back 'If you put a dog in a microwave, it makes a tasty snack' Definitely a very late night session (Moor and Coast tent) type song! |

Subject: RE: Dead animal songs From: rock chick Date: 09 Jul 03 - 06:22 PM wrote this when they were killing all those farm animals cos of the so called foot and mouth. They took the gun to the aminals head It looked them in the eyes They shot it dead Cry cry the animals die Cry cry the ammonals die The killing fields are thick with smoke No frolicking lambs, no carves to stroke Cry cry the animals die Cry cry the animals die Life should be cherished, Not taken with the gun Or the lethal injection, Watch the animals run Watch the animals run They took the gun to the animals head It looked them in the eyes They shot it dead Cry cry the animals die Cry cry the ammonals die The farmers cry, I wonder why Their animals are gone Is it money, is it greed Or maybe because there really was no need Can we learn to live as one? In peace and harmony Not by the gun Not by the gun They took the gun to the animals head It looked them in the eyes They shot it dead Cry cry the animals die Cry cry the ammonals die |
Subject: Lyr Add: LITTLE BUDDY (Hank Snow) From: Cluin Date: 10 Jul 03 - 01:30 AM There's Hank Snow's "Little Buddy". My Dad used to pull out the guitar and sing this one to us when we were kids and make my sisters cry every time (but not me though. Nope! No way! I defy you to prove it!) they heard that line "You're too late, sir, my doggy's dead". No Dad! Not that song!... Little Buddy by Hank Snow Broken hearted and so sad, golden curls all wet with tears Twas a picture of sorrow to see Kneeling close to the side of his pal and only pride A little lad these words he told me: He was such a lovely doggy and to me he was such fun But today as we played by the way A drunken man got mad at him because he barked in joy He beat him and he's dying here today Will you call the doctor please and tell him if he comes right now He'll save my precious doggie, 'cause I'll pray Then he stroked the fluffy head, but his little pal was dead Just a shiver and he slowly passed away (4th and 5th verse are spoken) He didn't know his dog had died, so I told him, as he cried "Come with me son, we'll get that doctor right away" "But I can't leave him here alone, I must get my doggy home So while you're gone I'll kneel beside him, sir, and pray" But when I returned he had his little pal upon his knee And the teardrops they were blinding his big blue eyes "You're too late, sir, my doggy's dead and no help can save him now But I'll meet my precious Buddy up in the sky" By a tiny narrow grave, where the willows sadly wave Are these words on a shingle of pine: "Little Buddy, rest in peace, God will watch you through the years 'Cause I told Him in my prayers that you were mine." |
Subject: RE: Dead animal songs From: GUEST,cookieless Blackcatter Date: 10 Jul 03 - 02:02 AM Ya know, it sounds like a song that touches on many of these songs woud be a possibly wonderful thing. Singin' the praises of dead animal songs, etc. Anyone up to the challenge, or all the "good" songwriters disgusted by this whole thread. Also - on another tack - How about songs where animals are having sex? We had a milk cow, no milk would it give, We had a milk cow, no milk would it give. My wife said honey, we're loosin' money, Because that milk cow won't give no milk. One day a rooster came into our yard, And knocked that milk cow, right off of her guard. She's givin' eggnog, just like she used to Since that rooster came into our yard. She's givin' eggnog, just like she used to Since that rooster came into our yard. |

Subject: Lyr Add: THE LAST OF THE GREAT WHALES (Andy Barnes From: JennyO Date: 13 Jul 03 - 11:20 AM Well there's this one: The Last Of The Great Whales Andy Barnes My soul has been torn from me and I am bleeding My heart it has been rent and I am crying All the beauty around me fades and I am screaming I am the last of the great whales and I am dying Last night I heard the cry of my last companion The roar of the harpoon gun and then I was alone I thought of the days gone by when we were thousands But I know that I soon must die, the last leviathan This morning the sun did rise Crimson in the north sky The ice was the colour of blood and the winds they did sigh I rose for to take a breath it was my last one From a gun came the roar of death and now I am done Oh now that we are all gone there's no more hunting The big fellow is no more it's no use lamenting What race will be next in line? All for the slaughter The elephant or the seal or your sons and daughters My soul has been torn from me and I am bleeding My heart it has been rent and I am crying All the beauty around me fades and I am screaming I am the last of the great whales and I am dying And so since time began we have been hunted Through oceans that were our home we have been haunted From Eskimos in canoes to mighty whalers Still you ignored our plea, none came to save us © 1986 Friendly Overtures Ltd. |
Subject: RE: Dead animal songs - especially cats From: Abby Sale Date: 14 Jul 03 - 11:09 AM Not a song, as far as I know, but derived from Egyptian folklore; a "Pocket Tale" as rendered by Peter Kohler First friend is sitting and whiling away the time. Second friend walks by carrying a cat. First friend calls out, lazily: "Where are you going?" Second friend answers, lazily: "To the river. To wash the cat." First friend observes: "It is very cold today. The cat will die." Second friend replies: "The cat will not die." A little later Second friend returns, without the cat. First friend asks: "Where's the cat?" Second friend mopes: "It's dead." First friend can't help it: "I told you that would happen. It is very cold today." Second friend, miserably: "It wasn't the cold." First friend: "Then what was it?" With much distress, Second friend holds up his fists and demonstrates: "It happened when I was wringing it dry!" |
Subject: Lyr Add: YOU SAY THAT THE BATTLE IS OVER (Mallett) From: GUEST,Chief Chaos Date: 14 Jul 03 - 07:17 PM How about nearly dead animals? YOU SAY THAT THE BATTLE IS OVER David Mallett And you say that the battle is over, and you say that the war is all done. Go tell it to those with the wind in their nose who run from the sound of the gun. And write it on the sides of the great whaling-ships, or on ice floes where conscience is tossed. With the wild in their eyes, it is they who must die, and it's we who must measure the loss. And you say that the battle is over, and finally the world is at peace. You mean no one is dying, and mothers don't weep, or it's not in the papers, at least. There are those who would deal in the dark side of life, there are those who would tear down the sun. And most men are ruthless, but some men will weep when the gifts we were given are gone. Now the blame cannot fall on the heads of a few, it's become such a part of the race. It's eternally tragic that that which is magic be killed at the end of the glorious chase. From young seals to great whales, from waters to wood, they will fall just like weeds in the wind. With fur coats and perfumes and trophies on walls, what a hell of a race to call men. And you say that the battle is over, and you say that the war is all done. Go tell it to those with the wind in their nose who run from the sound of the gun. And write it on the sides of the great whaling-ships, or on ice floes where conscience is tossed. With the wild in their eyes, it is they who must die, and it's we who must measure the loss. With the wild in their eyes, it is they who must die, and it's we who must measure the loss. |

Subject: RE: Dead animal songs From: GUEST,Grishka Date: 14 Nov 12 - 04:57 PM There must be thousands of songs about dead animals, even if we insist that the animal must be recognizable as an individual, and its death as such must be the subject. This excludes meat, ham, sausages, eggs, spam, gelatine, leather, fur coats, ... Let me propose a systematic approach. Each of the following topics will easily fill one or more threads:

Subject: RE: Dead animal songs From: GUEST,Grishka Date: 15 Nov 12 - 06:38 PM Mudcat gives me the welcome opportunity to pose as a scientist without doing the hard work. However, my list was not meant as a meagre parody of Francis J. Child, but rather to demonstrate the vastness of the topic. It has been mentioned that there are innumerable hunting songs (i.e. for fun and sport, which also includes Spanish bull fight songs), but for the other categories examples are easy to find as well. Taxation should depend on the degree of empathy for the animal, resp. emphasis on protection of animals, wildlife, and environment. Legal advice is recommended. |

Subject: Lyr Add: GOODBYE OLD PAL (Bill Monroe) From: Mark Clark Date: 21 Apr 15 - 06:55 PM Here is a song that's mentioned by name in a couple of threads but the lyrics have never been added… so here goes. My friend and former Blue Grass Boy, Bob Black, says it's the best song he's ever heard about a dead horse. GOODBYE OLD PAL by Bill Monroe Along about roundup time in Texas way out west, I lost a friend and a pal, boys, and laid him down to rest, I wept and mourned o'er his grave, to me, boys, it was sad, For I knew down beneath that mound lay the best pal I ever had. Yo-de-lay-ee-ay de-lay-ee-o de-lay-ee. My best pal was my old paint horse and now he's gone to rest, I laid him down beneath that mound in Texas way out west, Where the cactus blooms o'er his grave, and the coyotes cry, I know he sleeps in perfect peace beneath that Texas sky. Yo-de-lay-ee-ay de-lay-ee-o de-lay-ee. Dear old pal it breaks my heart to leave you here alone, Now I'm going to ride the range on the Texas roan, But my love for you, old pal, it will linger on, I will always think of you although you're dead and gone. Yo-de-lay-ee-ay de-lay-ee-o de-lay-ee. |
Subject: RE: Dead animal songs From: PHJim Date: 21 Apr 15 - 11:53 PM Fred Eaglesmith wrote a song called "I Shot Your Dog": Well, hello, neighbor. I been meaning to talk to you. I been putting it off. It's something I gotta do. I been living with a secret. Been keeping me awake. There's just something I gotta say: I shot your dog. He was on my property. I thought he was a coyote, on the run. I been missing some chickens, so I pulled the trigger. I feel so bad 'bout what I done. He also wrote one called "He's A Good Dog" which, although the dog is alive, he predicts his end: He's a good dog, but one of these days I'm gonna have to drive him into town and have him put away 'Cause he don't hear that good no more and he can't hardly walk But until then I'll look at him and say He's a good dog |

Subject: Lyr Add: THREE DRUNK NEWTS (Barnes & Barnes) From: Jim Dixon Date: 21 May 21 - 02:16 PM Blackcat2 mentioned this song back on 23 Dec 99, in a different thread: Animal Songs. Since this song involves the death of the animals, I thought it more appropriate to post the lyrics here. THREE DRUNK NEWTS As recorded by Barnes & Barnes on “Voobaha” (1980) (Tune: Three Blind Mice) Three drunk newts, three drunk newts. See how they crawl; see how they crawl, Creeping down your legs and feet, Looking for a snack to eat. They can’t even keep the beat, Three drunk newts, three drunk newts. Three stoned newts, three stoned newts, High as kites, yes, high as kites, They rumble in the parking lot. They scored a lid of seedless pot Really hope they don’t get caught, Three stoned newts, three stoned newts. Three wild newts, three wild newts, Causing a scene, they’re rowdy and mean. They licky sticky loopy juice. They’re off to punish and abuse. Look out, ‘cause they’re on the loose: Three wild newts, three wild newts. Look at their tails; aren’t they pretty? Look at their tails; itty-bitty. Wish I had a tail, But I don’t. [spoken] Let me tell you a tale about a trio of hot newts on parade. They had Saturday newt fever, and they was burning. They got a little too hot, dig? Three dead newts, three dead newts, See how they rot, see how they rot, Left out in the noonday sun, Dry and stiff and too well done. That’s the end of their newt fun, Three dead newts, three dead newts, Three dead newts. [spoken] They’re gone now, Lived life too hard. Yeah, g’bye, newts. G’bye. Sleep good. Pleasant dreams. Yeah! |
