Does anyone know the origins of a song that goes "When a cold winter shadow is cast on the ground and frost from the foot hills is creeping all around......

Not certain, but I have heard it on an old Irish Rovers album and I think Will Miller wrote it about life on the Canadian prairies.

Song is in the DT, in "The Hymns and Carols of Christmas" and several other websites, but no tune. Author listed as unknown.
Perhaps was in a deleted Irish Rovers album, "All Hung Up."
Interested, because the song is set in Alberta (Canada).

Will Miller at one time opened a pub in Calgary (The Unicorn).

Anyone have the tune? Or more information? It would be much appreciated.

I have the record and sang it a couple of times. I am not very good at writing down tunes by ear.

I just asked Dick if he would transcribe it. He agreed.

Thanks bunches, Susan. The music would be much appreciated.

Could you give me the data from the record (Date, number, publisher, etc.)? Maybe I can find a copy for myself somewhere.

Nice song
I'm looking for the writer as well- no sign of it anywhere I can find. The Irish Rovers "All Hung Up" album simply says "adapted by" Will Millar.
Anyone?

best- Julia

'The song "Cold Winter Shadow", apparently an old Appalachian folk song, contains a reference to Edmonton. It was recorded by a Canadian folk group The Irish Rovers and appears on their 1968 album, "All Hung Up". Many hearing the song, especially Canadians, assume that the song refers to Edmonton, Alberta.'

That is from a Wiki article at

Well, if the Irish Rovers All Hung Up album says "adapted by Will Millar, then I guess Millar is not the songwriter. Sure sounds like a 20th century composition, not something traditional.

HHere's another link with information about Will Millar:

Guest - you ask where the Mudcat Cafe is. I guess you could say it's a "virtual" tavern that lives on the Internet; but Mudcat Central is where the servers are, in State College, Pennsylvania.
