The Lass of Swansea Town is no.1416 in the Roud Folk Song Index; beside Phil Tanner's set (words and music are in Roy Palmer, The Rambling Soldier, 1977, 262-3), one is listed from John Maguire, Co. Fermanagh (The Lass From Glasgow Town, and one from Harry Curtis, Newfoundland (also The Lass of Swansea Town; so no cigar for Bert Lloyd this time). Also listed is a broadside edition, The Lass of - Town; evidently localisation was expected. Copies can be seen at  Bodleian Library Broadside Ballads:

The Lass of - Town.  The Birt edition indicates Irish Molly O as tune.

The Flower of Corby Mill is in Sam Henry but although it has the line "She's the blooming Rose of Antrim and the flower of Corby Mill" there is no connection between it and The Lass of Swansea Town. That is a song which turns up in several places and on ballad sheets with a first line "It was down by ----- barracks,"

The myth that the two songs were connected was started in the notes to the Caedmon/Topic Folksongs of Britain Ceries of LPs.

Mick Bracken posted a tune in Lyr. Req: The Hat My Father Wore, which reminds me of The Lass of Swansea Town as sung by Phil Tanner and later Mike Waterson. On Gary Gillards Watersons site, he says that The Lass of Swansea Town is based on an Irish song The Blooming Rose of Antrim.

A Google search finds the lyrics, but no tune, on Mudcatter Susanne (skw)'s website with the alternate title of The Flower Of Corby's Mill as sung by Kevin Mitchell ("Another song from the Inishowen tradition").

Anybody know if Kevin uses the Tanner/Waterson tune, the Johnny Paterson tune or an entirely different one? Have the words and music appeared in print anywhere?
