It's a hymn in the gospel tradition; almost sounds like a spiritual but I know it's composed. Who wrote it?

Now I know why it sounds traditional. Cyberhymnal says it was composed by Charles A. Tindley in 1905. This page will give you a list of all the familiar songs we've heard from him - Stand by Me, Leave It There, We'll Understand It Better By and By, and one called "I'll Overcome Some Day."

Bob Franke might have been influenced by this, but his song is "Hallelujah, the Great Storm is Over" (Lift up your wings and fly) and is different though equally powerful. Here is the link: The Great Storm is Over

In the 70s a black gospel group called the Twenty-First Century Singers recorded a more contemporary version of this song. The words are the same. I haven't thought of this song in years.

It's a great one, and has been a staple for my group for, well, over 10 years! We sing the first, second and last verse as posted above.

I love this song.

I first heard it sometimes in the mid 1980s when two young girls who were friends of my daughter sang it for me. They sang "Encourage my soul". I interpreted that to mean in "plain English" "Give me courage".

Here is a link to a 1988 video of an African American choir singing that gospel song very much like I remember first hearing it. Note that the title of the video is "Encourage My Soul"

The 'Cat could use more Tindley. I only see about three of his texts here. Sometime soon, hopefully during Easter Season, I'm planning to sing his "Heaven's Christmas Tree" and "A Better Day Is Coming". At the Hymn Society convention last summer in B'ham, Jimmie Abbington gave a sectional on Tindley, and we sang maybe a dozen of his pieces; I was particularly taken by "There was Naaman the leper" with its lovely line "his sickness made him white".

Would it be better, do you suppose, to add more of his texts to this thread, or to start a new thread?

Haruo - a Tindley thread would be great - and if can give Google Book links, that would help a lot. Searches on Google Books seems to be spotty. Guess they haven't figured out how to read all the type faces.

The United Methodists had a great page of Tindley sound clip links, here, drawing on the contents of Beams of Heaven, a book containing many of his songs, but the links don't work. The GIA page on a CD of the same title has some working links to short clips.

Will try to add more resources soon, in a dedicated Tindley thread.

Actually on the GIA CD maybe the title song is the only Tindley piece, I'm not sure.
