Hi hesperis. Sorry we weren't able to squeeze in another visit to Toronto before heading south. I'll have more details later, but right now my internet time is severely limited. Hopefully we'll have internet access at home soon.

Congrats on the new Tim's in your neighborhood. That's great!

I just found a reasonably good seafood restaurant right near here. Actually, Striker found it. You guys would LOVE it... so visit! *grin*

Oh, and there's now a Tim Horton's one city block away. :)

This is what I wanted to say before but didn't have time:

So we went to the Michigan Irish Music Festival a few weekends ago, and spent some time with Big Mick, Seamus Kennedy, and Pete Boom. It was great to see Mick again, and it was wonderful to meet Seamus and Pete (and Mick's lovely daughter, and Seamus and Pete's lovely wives). We went to a nice little pub on Saturday Evening and saw Mick's band, the Conklin Ceilidh (?) band. That was a rousing good time.

On Sunday we caught one of Seamus' performances. Another rousing good time, but of a somewhat different sort. Seamus sings Scottish songs as well as Irish ones. I think Seamus must be part Scot because he sings the Scottish songs the best ;-)

I asked Seamus if he would please give my sister (the outlaw pyrate) a thump on the head for me next time he sees her because she doesn't approve of accordions. He said he would. He's a good man.

Ahhh yes, the bonnie Toronty pics. They're quite good as I discovered when I unrolled the film in a dark room and examined it using magneto-telekinesis. I've recently heard tell of a certain chemical process that will render the film viewable to non-mutant eyes. I think I'll investigate this soon... ;)

Very cool pics, indieman. Thanks.

So we went to Minneapolis and St. Paul last weekend and we've been sick with colds all this week, so I haven't been on-line at all until today.

We went to see guitarist, Muriel Anderson in Minn/St. P. She was giving a workshop that JtS participated in, and then she gave a house concert in the evening. It was fun meeting her and hearing her playfully virtuostic style of playing and performing.

I have to go do laundry now. Back soon, hopefully.

Hey Rick. I agree with you about being sick and about having sucky medication side effects. It was good to talk to you on the phone, however briefly though. We'll be in this area for a few weeks yet, so maybe next time we're up your way you'll be feeling better.

I forgot to thank you, Clinton, for posting the pictures from our evening in Windsor. It's great to have them on this thread.

Wow, indieman. I'm glad you pointed that out. I somehow managed to miss seeing this picture of you when I was looking through the pictures the first time. I'm glad we have a picture of you at that gathering.

I second everything JtS said. It was a great weekend, and it was wonderful meeting Clinton and maire-aine. I was also sorry you weren't able to make it, Mick. We'll be in the area for a few more weeks yet though, so we still have some time to try again before we head back.

Thanks for posting those, John. Those are some great pictures.

LH, you and Raptor really should get down to see Clinton. If he keeps meeting Mudcatters in the flesh, he might get addicted to it, and I do like spreading my addictions around. If you do it when we are available, maybe we'll make another trip to Windsor and be there when you are. If you alert me to your plans by PM, I promise not to tell Clinton about it and spoil the surprise. I have to warn you though, Clinton eats hecklers for lunch ;-)

Thanks Claymore. I don't know if you got the e-mail I sent you about your dad, but here's a heads up about it in case you missed it.

Carol, I heard a real interesting show on NPR called the Infinite Mind about CFIDS on Sunday night. If you contact theinfinitemind.com and then use their search engine for CFS I understand you can get a transcript. They were discussing a number of new areas of research which you may want to make use of. Good luck on your caravan across the North.

We may even be able to get Shane down from Blind River, which would be cool, eh? I can't say when it's gonna happen cos we want it to be a surprise for Clinton.

Sorry you missed it, Mick. We all had a good time. The gentleman with the Irish accent is David Murphy. He and his wife Virginia Blankenhorn post here from time to time. They will be teaching traditional Irish singing on Thursday nights with Comhaltas. The first night is 4-Sep-03, which is usually an orientation, get-to-meet-folks. Check them out at Link to Detroit Comhaltas

I expect to be having another get-together in a couple of months. I'll let you know.

It is a great lyric. Tim O'Brien uses it in a wonderful song about a woman who falls in love with the devil...sorta

I am very disappointed that I couldn't make this one. Life got in the way Sunday morning, and caused me to have to cancel out at the last minute. MaryAnne, I hope the invitation will be there again. I was really looking forward to seeing you, Jack, and Carol again. And meeting other Michigan folkies, as well.

All the best,

It was a great weekend. We took in Clinton Hammond's show on Saturday, then enjoyed his company over beers and good food at his "local". Clinton is a fine performer and a funny man. I highly recommend his show.

Sunday we attended maire-aine's bbq. Marie-aine has a fine ear for melody and sings with gusto. We truly enjoyed her songs. We met some good pickers, many of whom were named Bob, enjoyed wonderfull hospitality, companionship and of course music. We were treated to Banjo, Bagpipes, accordion and two Bodhran's all in one session, No one lived up to the reputations of the instruments. All the players were tasteful, musical and polite. I particularly enjoyed a gentleman with as irish accent who sang acapella irish ballads. He gives lessons in this form Thursday night. I'm going to try and attend a couple.

Clinton Here are the web addresses I promised you. We can use another voice singing the praises of Seagulls in these forums.

Marie-aine, Bob the slothead martin playing salesman also expressed interest in these website. Tell him he can get all of his guitar-pickup related questions answered in full on these sites.

Cheers all
To use Clinton's phrase
WELL MET!!!

People used to eat a mix of fennel and aniseed after meals to sweeten the breath. Sweeter breath gives sweeter words. So people started saying "you speak with fennel" as a way of saying "you flatter me". It used to have a connotation of falseness though.

Just don't ask how that came up in conversation. *wink*

As for February... it's the greyest, coldsnap-est, most ornery time of the year in TO. But yeah, the indoor scene is definitely where it's at... and maybe I'll dig my skates out this year.

Amos, you don't really have the hang of Toronto. It's like the warmest place in Ontario where there's people living. (Never mind the riposte, Clinton.)

Carol is quite right about Orillia, which is on the Snow Belt which stretches east-west through "northern southern Ontario". (if you get my drift). As you go east and uphill along the snow belt, it turns into the Cold Snow Belt...peaking where I used to live, just east of Algonquin Park. Hit 60 below Fahrenheit one winter in the early 80's.

However, tragically, despite the cavalier attitude us Cold Ontarians have towards Toronto winters, rather a lot of homeless folks have been freezing to death there the past few winters.

By the way, February is the coldest month. December is late fall...

First time I was ever in Toronto was in February. I thought it was a grand place to be during that time of year. Of course, I was staying in Orillia at the time, where it snows a lot, so the TO climate seemed quite mild by comparison ;-)

Plus, when I was in Toronto in February, it was to see Rick F. and Heather, and as I said to them at the time, the warmth generated by their friendship more than makes up for the cold weather.

Thanks again, MMario. Maybe 'trailer adventurers' would be a good term. It sure feels like an adventure, and as a Georgia friend of ours said to me yesterday, "I swear to god, everywhere the two of you go, something really weird happens".

Congratulations on the kitchen stuff, hesperis!

Toronto in February?

They celebrate recovering from December. Those still able to do so go up and down the streets sorting out all the asses that have frozen off and making sure they get returned to the right folks. T

hey also walk around with little baggies to capture all those frozen conversations where it was too cold to hear anything. They save 'em up and thaw them at the end of the day, or spring if they don't have any house heating, so they can catch up on what their friends have been saying to them.
