We're taking our show on the road semi-permanently. Jack the Sailor has a short term (nine week) consulting contract in Dearborn, Michigan. We'll be staying in the Dearborn area until early August, and then we'll be staying in Ypsilanti until sometime in mid-September. We're leaving for Michigan this coming friday (July 11), and expect to arrive on the 13th or 14th.

In early August we'll be going to Wisconsin to pick up the travel trailer we'll be living in for a while, and we're planning on making a side trip to Chicago on the way back. We've already got a gathering in the planning stages in the Chicago area with members of the Acoustic Guitar forum. Mudcatters will be most welcome at that gathering.

While in Michigan, we'll be making a few trips up into southern Ontario. We'll definitely be spending some time in Toronto, as well as Windsor. We want to make a trip up to Orillia as well. And JtS has relatives in Welland, Bramalea, and I think somewhere near Guelph, who we'll probably be visiting at some point.

We'd love to get together with Mudcatters on this trip. If you're interested, give a holler here in this thread or by PM. We'll maintain some degree of internet connection, although I'm not sure how frequently we'll be logging on, but if you post here or send a PM, one or the other of us will get back to you.

Any time between now and July 30th (I'm out of town 30-July thru 3-Aug) or after that would be great. Len Wallace is playing at the Kildare House on 19-July and Clinton and his friends are at Kildare House on 26-July, both are Fridays. Right, CH?

I'm in Chatham, Ontario (around 45 minutes east of Detroit) this Saturday for the Tartan Sertoma Highland Games (better known as, well, Chatham Games... ;-).   Detroit Highland Games are the first Saturday in August - Battlefield Band was there a couple of years ago. I won't be there, I'll be in Maxville, Ontario (go east on highway 401 - if you hit Quebec you've gone too far) for the North American Pipe Band Championsips. Then off to Scotland the next week for the World Championships.

If you're here when I get back, session? Beer fest?

Cheers -

Pete

Mick, meeting up in Windsor sounds like a fantastic idea. maire-aine, we would love to meet you, too.

Stephen Lee, I'm not sure how long we'll be in Wisconsin, but I don't think it's going to be long enough to get together with anyone there. Are you close enough to Chicago to come to the gathering we'll be attending in that area?

Sounds great, Pete Boom.

Yeah - except that I'm heading out tomorrow morning - not tonite.

Also this weekend in Saline is the Saline Celtic Fest. I played there a few times with my old band. Last year there was a bit of a session in the dark at the end of the day. This year I've heard that they are making the "green room" for the main stage available for an after-hours session. If you can't catch Clinton (or my pipe band) in Chatham, this might be a good alternative.

Cheers -

Pete

Hi everybody...

We've been pretty busy getting settled in here and we had to go up to Ontario to deal with some passport issues for JtS, so we haven't had much time to plan anything else yet. We'll probably be doing that some time in the next few days, and then I'll start getting in touch with people. The good news is that when we were coming back, we didn't have any difficulty getting JtS back into the US. We didn't really anticipate a problem, but it was nice to get that first one behind us. Going into Canada, I forgot to leave my pepper spray in the hotel room, so it was confiscated at the border. That's the second time for me.

Stephen Lee, the gathering is scheduled for the weekend of August 9. Here's a couple of threads in the acoustic guitar forum that have details. It would be great if you could be there:

Marion, thanks for the heads up. We might be in that part of Ontario at some point between now and when we head south. I'll send a PM if it looks like we'll be in your area.

Thanks for the info, Pete Boom and maire-aine.

After your attempt at pepperspray smuggling, feel like trying it with an autoharp? Gutbucketeer, who's somewhere in Michigan I think, has one that I am negotiating to purchase, PM him if you can snag it and take it to Toronto (like, Cafe Rick's) when you go there.

We've had to make a change in plans. The company that was making our travel trailer (our new house) said that the company that makes the furniture for inside the trailers burnt down and they couldn't guarantee a delivery date. So we went to a place here in Michigan and bought one that was in the lot. So now we'll be spending the weekend putting the trailer in the campground and moving our stuff over to it.

Sorry we'll be missing you this Saturday, Maryanne. Will that be the only time between now and mid-September that you'll be at Kildare House? Clinton, are there any weekends between now and then when you won't be somewhere in the Windsor area?

Oops, heric. I forgot to respond to your post. That's so great that Alex is getting to enjoy the wonder of those books. Some time you'll have to scan some of her artwork and put a picture up in WebShots or something.

So sorry to hear that, Stephen Lee. Have a great time at the Buskerfest '03

Willie-O, I PMed GutBucketeer and he said he's in the Silver Spring, Maryland area (which is where I thought I remembered he was), and not in Michigan. Sorry we can't help you with that but if we find ourselves in your area before we head south, it would be great to see you again.

I guess we'll need to get a satellite connection or something. If anyone wants me to have their phone number for contact, or if anyone wants mine, send a PM and we'll try to get it taken care of by tomorrow morning. Or you can send me an e-mail at squeezemusette@yahoo.com.

We'll try to get reconnected on the internet as soon as possible.

Howdy Buckaroos!!!

This is my first time on the Mudcat in what seems like weeks. We're (JtS, me, my son, and Erenle) are at Erenle's apartment. This is a GROUP POST!!!

This will be short because JtS wants to go sit on a patio and drink beer, and Little Hawk will be meeting us there in just a few minutes. We are wondering why Erenle's name got changed from hesperis to something that could have been as cool as Earlene, but nooooo... just Erenle. What's up with that?

Anyway, this is just a short Toronto visit for the benefit of my son who will be going back to school in Utah on Monday. We expect to be making more trips up here to see more people before we head back to the deep south. I hope to be gettin online more now that I've found a good library nearby.

Well Hi, Carol,
Been following your progress. Squeeze a tune for me. Finally have learned a full set on my new box. Tuamgrainey castle (hornpipe), Napoleon crossing the Rhine, and Julia Delaney (reels). Am also working on some airs. Love them free reeds! My list of tunes to learn is far longer than my remaining years :-))

lol, my jazzy friend was going to sign up for mudcat, but my cookie was still on her computer, so she changed MY info instead of registering new info. I hope she didn't post yet... oh well. I'm back, I'm me, and you'll be seeing a new Erenle soon! (I think it's a cool name.)

Had an awesome time both last night and today. I invited Erenle to hang with us, we went to a cafe, then back to CarolC's hotel for some jammin'. Her son is a cool guy, JtS is a really funny guy, and it was great meeting them.

We danced to "Tierra mi cuerpo, agua mi sangre, aire mi aliento, y fuego mi espiritu." for a bit, it was great to teach again, and great to dance again!

The group post got cut a little too short by having to go to meet Hawk, but that was cool too. I tried to get in touch with Rick and Duckboots, but that didn't happen. Hope Rick's ok...

So much fun. I'm beaming now, I'm so happy to have seen CarolC again.

When are you guys coming back??????????????

Had a nice gettogether with Jack the Sailor, CarolC, her son Ian, and Hesperis at the Black Bull on Queen Street in Toronto. The Black Bull is a very old hotel/pub sort of brick building with a large outdoor patio facing on a very lively part of Queen Street...lots of neat stores around there. It was a Saturday night, though, so most of them were closed. For some reason most Canadian stores close at 6 pm on Saturday (only). It's a tradition, I guess. So, everybody was in fine fettle, the weather was hot but beautiful, and the conversation went all over the map from prosaic subjects like personal history and the usual political imbroglios (been dying to use that word..) to really fascinating and riveting subjects like the impact of William Shatner on the World of Fine Art! Like, wow, eh?

"It was decent, eh?" as Blind Drunk in Blind River might say...

Looking forward to Jack & Carol's next visit!

Yeah, sure... they hit submit on the group post before putting anything in it and then they ditched me. I had to run seven blocks before I caught up with them and then I only found them hiding behind some bushes because Ian sneezed and I can recognize his sneezes anywhere.

So it was fantastic getting to see hesperis and LH again, and it was great to meet erenle and her daughter as well. The weekend contained just the right amount of music and BS (of course), and Ian has fallen in love with Toronto. He says TO has replaced New York City as his favorite city.

The weekend before this last, we went to the Acoustic Guitar gathering in Chicago where we met John Hardly for the first time. He showed up fasionably late, so we didn't get to see very much of him, but we enjoyed his guitar playing and his singing.

We're going to try to make it to your BBQ, maire-aine, so we'll keep you posted as things shape up for us.

We'll be making more trips up into Canada while we're in Michigan. We still need to get to Windsor on a Friday or Saturday evening to catch one of Clinton's gigs and meet him, and we hope to visit Orillia at least once and maybe Toronto one or two more times before we head back.

Very, very cool, Mike. What kind of box do you have? That sounds like a great repertoire you're working on. Maybe I'll get to hear you play some day.

This on-the-road trailer lifestyle is pretty cool. We were right in the middle of the power outage but we weren't effected all that terribly much. We have a backup battery for lights and stuff, our stoves are gas powered, and our fridge automatically switches to gas if the electric goes out. It was hot here, but it wasn't anywhere near as bad in the campground as it was in most places because there's a lot of shade. Anyway, my time's running out, but I'll be back online probably tomorrow and post some more stuff.

Greetings from Utah! This is the son of CarolC fresh off the plane. Today alone, I've been through Detroit, Phoenix, Las Vegas and Salt Lake City...but Toronto is still my favorite.

This weekend's trip broke my Toronto cherry, and became the grand finale of what I dubbed several months ago as "The Summer of Lost Dreams". Maybe a little on the hokey side, but it lived up to it's name and then some! Anyway as my mom said, I'm in love with the place.

After roaming the city for good (not to mention powered) restaurants, listening to (and loving) the accordion/flute/guitar jam session that took place in my very hotel room, recieving a sacred circle dance lesson from Hesperis (a great teacher even if I wasn't the best of students), and then roaming the city again throughout Saturday, I was nearly disgruntled when it came time to drive back to the States.

But someday, HOHO, someday I will return to that wonderful place...and make a movie there. In the meantime, I'll make the best of Utah, get my film degree, and think back on great times. Much thanks to CarolC, JacktheSailor, Hesperis (formerly Erenle(formerly Hesperis)), LittleHawk, and the real Erenle (if she returns with that name) for such a wonderful experience!

Toronto in February?

They celebrate recovering from December. Those still able to do so go up and down the streets sorting out all the asses that have frozen off and making sure they get returned to the right folks. T

hey also walk around with little baggies to capture all those frozen conversations where it was too cold to hear anything. They save 'em up and thaw them at the end of the day, or spring if they don't have any house heating, so they can catch up on what their friends have been saying to them.

First time I was ever in Toronto was in February. I thought it was a grand place to be during that time of year. Of course, I was staying in Orillia at the time, where it snows a lot, so the TO climate seemed quite mild by comparison ;-)

Plus, when I was in Toronto in February, it was to see Rick F. and Heather, and as I said to them at the time, the warmth generated by their friendship more than makes up for the cold weather.

Thanks again, MMario. Maybe 'trailer adventurers' would be a good term. It sure feels like an adventure, and as a Georgia friend of ours said to me yesterday, "I swear to god, everywhere the two of you go, something really weird happens".

Congratulations on the kitchen stuff, hesperis!

Amos, you don't really have the hang of Toronto. It's like the warmest place in Ontario where there's people living. (Never mind the riposte, Clinton.)

Carol is quite right about Orillia, which is on the Snow Belt which stretches east-west through "northern southern Ontario". (if you get my drift). As you go east and uphill along the snow belt, it turns into the Cold Snow Belt...peaking where I used to live, just east of Algonquin Park. Hit 60 below Fahrenheit one winter in the early 80's.

However, tragically, despite the cavalier attitude us Cold Ontarians have towards Toronto winters, rather a lot of homeless folks have been freezing to death there the past few winters.

By the way, February is the coldest month. December is late fall...

As for February... it's the greyest, coldsnap-est, most ornery time of the year in TO. But yeah, the indoor scene is definitely where it's at... and maybe I'll dig my skates out this year.

People used to eat a mix of fennel and aniseed after meals to sweeten the breath. Sweeter breath gives sweeter words. So people started saying "you speak with fennel" as a way of saying "you flatter me". It used to have a connotation of falseness though.

Just don't ask how that came up in conversation. *wink*

It was a great weekend. We took in Clinton Hammond's show on Saturday, then enjoyed his company over beers and good food at his "local". Clinton is a fine performer and a funny man. I highly recommend his show.

Sunday we attended maire-aine's bbq. Marie-aine has a fine ear for melody and sings with gusto. We truly enjoyed her songs. We met some good pickers, many of whom were named Bob, enjoyed wonderfull hospitality, companionship and of course music. We were treated to Banjo, Bagpipes, accordion and two Bodhran's all in one session, No one lived up to the reputations of the instruments. All the players were tasteful, musical and polite. I particularly enjoyed a gentleman with as irish accent who sang acapella irish ballads. He gives lessons in this form Thursday night. I'm going to try and attend a couple.

Clinton Here are the web addresses I promised you. We can use another voice singing the praises of Seagulls in these forums.

So we went to Minneapolis and St. Paul last weekend and we've been sick with colds all this week, so I haven't been on-line at all until today.

We went to see guitarist, Muriel Anderson in Minn/St. P. She was giving a workshop that JtS participated in, and then she gave a house concert in the evening. It was fun meeting her and hearing her playfully virtuostic style of playing and performing.

I have to go do laundry now. Back soon, hopefully.

We're off to Muskegon tomorrow for the Michigan Irish festival.

We'll be there most of Saturday, possibly part of Sunday.

Hope to meet some of you there, keep an eye out for us.

Ahhh yes, the bonnie Toronty pics. They're quite good as I discovered when I unrolled the film in a dark room and examined it using magneto-telekinesis. I've recently heard tell of a certain chemical process that will render the film viewable to non-mutant eyes. I think I'll investigate this soon... ;)

Hey Pete!

We had a fantastic time, but I'll have to elaborate later. Someone else needs this line. Back soon.

This is what I wanted to say before but didn't have time:

So we went to the Michigan Irish Music Festival a few weekends ago, and spent some time with Big Mick, Seamus Kennedy, and Pete Boom. It was great to see Mick again, and it was wonderful to meet Seamus and Pete (and Mick's lovely daughter, and Seamus and Pete's lovely wives). We went to a nice little pub on Saturday Evening and saw Mick's band, the Conklin Ceilidh (?) band. That was a rousing good time.

On Sunday we caught one of Seamus' performances. Another rousing good time, but of a somewhat different sort. Seamus sings Scottish songs as well as Irish ones. I think Seamus must be part Scot because he sings the Scottish songs the best ;-)

I asked Seamus if he would please give my sister (the outlaw pyrate) a thump on the head for me next time he sees her because she doesn't approve of accordions. He said he would. He's a good man.

Hi hesperis. I'm not sure when we'll be able to do a TO visit, but if it looks like we'll be there again before we head south, we'll definitely let you know.

Oh, and there's now a Tim Horton's one city block away. :)

Hi hesperis. Sorry we weren't able to squeeze in another visit to Toronto before heading south. I'll have more details later, but right now my internet time is severely limited. Hopefully we'll have internet access at home soon.

Congrats on the new Tim's in your neighborhood. That's great!
