Subject: RE: Ormskirk Folk Music Festival From: songs2play Date: 08 Jul 03 - 02:59 AM The Tom Topping Band is there as well. Who could ask for more. |
Subject: RE: Ormskirk Folk Music Festival From: Joan from Wigan Date: 08 Jul 03 - 03:15 AM Mark Dowding and I will be hosting the Singaround in the Buck i'th' Vine on the Saturday. Mudcatters please come and say hello, and have a sing as well! Joan |
Subject: RE: Ormskirk Folk Music Festival From: Pied Piper Date: 08 Jul 03 - 05:06 AM I see that the term "Session" has been purloined yet again to mean sing around. PP |
Subject: RE: Ormskirk Folk Music Festival From: Noreen Date: 08 Jul 03 - 07:31 AM PP, the only mention made of that word is where a singers session is advertised, which seems fairly self-explanatory to me. Nobody has a monopoly on the use of a word, and as long as the meaning is clear I can't see any harm in 'your' word being used here. Hoping to support this in some way, being an Ormskirk girl! What time will your singaround start, Joan/Mark? |
Subject: RE: Ormskirk Folk Music Festival From: Mark Dowding Date: 08 Jul 03 - 08:10 AM I haven't got a clue...Joan? I imagine it's about 12:00 noon Some good beer in the Buck i'th'Vine though. Being a mild drinker, it's one of the few pubs I'd go to in Ormskirk . The other pub I'd go in is the Greyhound. The rest are all fizzy/keg/smoothflow/lager/noise and everything else that's wrong with going out for a drink these days - not that I've a strong opinion on the subject. Hopefully see a few of you in there on Saturday. Not that Joan and myself will run out of songs between us but it gets boring singign to one another all afternoon. |
Subject: RE: Ormskirk Folk Music Festival From: Joan from Wigan Date: 08 Jul 03 - 08:29 AM As far as I know, Mark and I will officially be at the Buck from 12 noon till about 3.30pm. Who will be carrying it after that I don't know. There are two "All Day Singers Sessions" advertised in the programme, the one at the Buck and the other at the Plough in Church Street. I don't know who's hosting that. And I'm making no comments about the drinks because I only drink cola (I suppose that comes under the "fizzy" heading?). And, Mark , you're never boring! But it would be lovely to meet other Mudcatters. |
Subject: RE: Ormskirk Folk Music Festival From: Mark Dowding Date: 08 Jul 03 - 09:17 AM I was down for doing the Plough but from what I gather, the Landlady objected on the grounds that more than two people were going to be singing when Jill Fielding explained to her what a singaround was, and she didn't have a licence for that. (Isn't there a George Formby song along those lines? - "You don't need a licence for that"). I'm not altogether sure what's happening in the Plough now. Neither of us are boring Joan - we just like to share our songs with other people! Get ready to sing till we get chucked out! |
Subject: RE: Ormskirk Folk Music Festival From: Pied Piper Date: 08 Jul 03 - 10:05 AM Actually I was referring to guest Joe Morans post. PP |
Subject: RE: Ormskirk Folk Music Festival From: Noreen Date: 08 Jul 03 - 10:11 AM OK thanks PP. Aren't there any instrumental sessions planned? There have been previously- I remember playing in a session in Ormskirk with Paddy Glackin- but that was a fair few years ago. |
Subject: RE: Ormskirk Folk Music Festival From: GUEST,Ms Lemon (in Crosby Library) Date: 08 Jul 03 - 10:21 AM Good luck to the Mini fest. I'm sure it'll be loads of fun. I'm looking forward to hearing (reading) all the comments afterwards. Sal |
Subject: RE: Ormskirk Folk Music Festival From: Alio Date: 08 Jul 03 - 12:40 PM We can't be there unfortunately, as we'll probably spend all weekend making the signs for next weekend (Saddleworth!!) But I am covering it on Sounds of Folk tonight. Have a great weekend! Ali |
Subject: RE: Ormskirk Folk Music Festival From: Schantieman Date: 08 Jul 03 - 03:35 PM Good luck all! I shall be sailing the seven seas by then (well, the English Channel, anyway!) otherwise I'd be there. Steve |
Subject: RE: Ormskirk Folk Music Festival From: songs2play Date: 09 Jul 03 - 02:54 AM Joan , Mark AND The Tom Topping Band. Pinch Me - I'm Dreaming. I'm in work again this weekend, and I think it could be a long shift, so all I can send is my best wishes to all, and hope that the weather is glorious. Leighton |
Subject: RE: Ormskirk Folk Music Festival From: Joan from Wigan Date: 09 Jul 03 - 03:51 AM Mark, I'll quite happily stay there all day and all night if people want it to continue - I always prefer singarounds to concerts. And PP, singers often refer to singarounds as sessions (I do myself) - the term is not exclusive to musicians. And I enjoy a singaround where there are musicians as well as singers, who do their bit at leading a piece in turn. Not only that, but some (admittedly not all) singers, particularly those who accompany themselves, will appreciate and enjoy a little extra backing from a fiddle, mandolin, harmonica, or whatever. Some of us are also inclined to include an "instrumental break" in the middle of a song if there are musicians there who will oblige. So please feel free to bring your instrument(s) to the singaround - you will be very welcome. |
Subject: RE: Ormskirk Folk Music Festival From: Joan from Wigan Date: 09 Jul 03 - 12:41 PM PP - notwithstanding your comments in the "Corruption of the Meaning of Session" thread, you'll still be welcome at the song session - and so will any other musicians, singers, and audience. |
Subject: RE: Ormskirk Folk Music Festival From: Noreen Date: 11 Jul 03 - 12:27 PM I'm taking the kiddies to the ceili this evening, may see you tomorrow in the Buck i'th' Vine. |
Subject: RE: Ormskirk Folk Music Festival From: Joan from Wigan Date: 12 Jul 03 - 02:45 AM Hope you and the kiddies enjoyed the ceili, Noreen - and hope to see you later today. |
Subject: RE: Ormskirk Folk Music Festival From: Noreen Date: 12 Jul 03 - 07:35 PM Ceili was fun thanks, kids & I and my mum enjoyed it. Planned to take in a bit of Buck 'ith' Vine but other plans got in the way- hope all went well. Lovely day for the outside events in the park and round the clock tower! |
Subject: RE: Ormskirk Folk Music Festival From: Joan from Wigan Date: 13 Jul 03 - 04:09 AM It did go well at the Buck, after a slow start. Mark had to leave about 6ish (he was due elsewhere), but those of us that were left didn't actually pack up and leave till about 9.30pm - not bad when it was originally not expected to last after 3.30pm! Jill reported that there were about 100 people at the afternoon concert, haven't heard about the evening one. Two of the acts booked for the street entertainment didn't turn up, but everything else appears to have gone well. The weather was glorious, and what I did see of the street events was good and being received well by the public. I think it bodes well for next year. |
Subject: RE: Ormskirk Folk Music Festival From: GUEST,JoeMoran Date: 13 Jul 03 - 04:44 AM I was planning to go with M., but his sister couldn't cover for him. The thing I was looking forward to most, was the flute player from " Roam". I'd love to be able to play like him. |
Subject: RE: Ormskirk Folk Music Festival From: Mark Dowding Date: 13 Jul 03 - 07:26 AM It was a good afternoon at the Buck. Good to see Scowie and Les Bond and hear some of their poems and monologues. Also some excellent singing from Pat Fisher - lovely voice. The best bit was when a young lady interrupted one of my songs and asked for guitar lessons. Did I manage to finish that song Joan? Next year will be interesting when the new licencing laws kick in. The landlord informed me when I walked in that "we can only have 2 people singing in here you know - you'll have to go outside if more come to sing!" I'm sure he was giving me hard stares when there were five of us doing something but unfortunately there wasn't any room outside for us all to sit so we had to stay put. He didn't say anything though. I'm sure you'd all have chipped in with the £20,000 fines and visited us during our six months stay in prison! Funnily enough the pub didn't burst into flames or any riotous assembly start. By the way Joan - the party I went to afterwards was very good - ended up singing a load more songs so I've no voice this morning! Mark |
Subject: RE: Ormskirk Folk Music Festival From: Joan from Wigan Date: 13 Jul 03 - 12:16 PM Joe Moran, sorry you couldn't make it - but check Roam's website for details of their other upcoming local gigs. Mark, other singers at the Buck included Theresa (treaties1), Dave, Mel, and (after you left) Shane. And yes, you did manage to finish the song eventually! (I can't follow the logic of someone who expects you to able to carry on singing, and answer their questions, both at the same time!?!? - too much ale, perhaps!) Glad you enjoyed your party, and I'm sure your voice will recover soon. |
Subject: RE: Ormskirk Folk Music Festival From: Mark Dowding Date: 13 Jul 03 - 01:50 PM The memory's coming back now - thanks for the reminder of the other singers - didn't mean to leave people out. Too much good beer doesn't do the memory any good at all! The voice has recovered now -just as well as I'm at the Junction at Rainford tonight for a singers night. |
