I haven't ordered one, yet, but I don't spend money on my hair in any other pricey way and I do have to keep it up during the heat, so I think I'll get one, soon. I hope it will work with my fine, thin hair. Here's a cheap way to make one of those, sort of. I used to have a headband which was a roll, so it didn't lie flat. I used to comb my hair in a circle, hanging down evenly all around my head, including my face. Then I'd put the round headband on top of my head and push it down to where it wouldn't pop off, sort of like a crown, with part of it across my forehead just a little. Then I would start bringing my hair up and tucking it over and under so that the band didn't show and my hair was rolled like in that website picture, except for in front where the band showed because i didn't have bangs. It doesn't work as well with really long hair unless the headband is a fatter roll. Anyway, you might try it with a scarf or something with something inside of it to keep the round shape (like a sausage in a circle**bg**). kat |

They had a bubble cut hairdo with a long centre tail that was wound in by a key in the back and let out by pulling gently whilst pressing a button in her stomach. I had a brunette, my sister a blonde one. She broke the blondes' neck, whereupon the hair no longer worked, so she stole mine.. I don't think I ever forgave her..... The new Barbie 'Rapunzel' doll uses much the same sort of technology but has an extension as well to make it even longer. LTS |

I don't dye my hair; it's mousy brown but it tends to bleach and discolor easily and I think I'm probably better off if I leave it alone. I found this great little oval plastic thingie called "Magic Bun" or "Perfect Bun" or something at the grocery store (hair aisle). You stick your hair through, roll it up, and clip the ends together and it makes an instant, no-pin bun. It works with straight hair, too--mine is so straight and fine that barrettes and pins don't stay in, but the bun thing does. Keeps it off your neck and out of your face. |

It seems to say that if there is a risk it would probably be confined to the 1st trimester. Even if you decide it is safe, make sure you do a strand test, as hair reacts differently in pregnancy to usual and lots of pregnant women have used their normal hair dye with unpredictable results! And my hair's not as long as I thought, it's more like 2 handwidths from my waist, phooey. Growing hair is sooo slow. Beccy - buy up big in the bargin shops! - last night I added 2 pairs of $3 ear-rings to my jewellry collection from my local el-cheapo shop - a great place to browse looking for treasures including hair accessories. In my end of the world $2 or $3 can buy wonderful stuff I never knew I needed. Recently I bought a fancy scrunchie (decorative elastic thingie to hold up pony tails etc, in case you call them by another name). I bought it to use as a neck ruffle on a clown bear, but it would look lovely in hair. sandra |

In the 10 years i managed a salon, i saw more wierd things happen when women wouldn't 'fess up that they were preggers. Khaki green immediately comes to mind on a 3 month pregnant woman who insisted on a henna. Lessee, to lessen the tedium you can: french braid, french twist, pony tail, scarf,headband, to only name a few. Anyway, you are in princess training right now, and i recommend weekly massage and pedicures. Should be the regime for all expecting mommies! |

What a difference it made. I looked and felt 20 years younger. Since then I have shortened it a few more times and I find it so easy to care for. Wash and go. Or, even fill a wading pool? I am always surprised at how much cooler I feel even if I just get my feet cooled off in cool water. Poor thing, my daughter is feeling rather large herself AND hot, but at least she stays cool at work. Just for fun and, Animaterra you might like to look at this page, too, about 1/3 of the way down, at the Fashion Roll Filler. Don't be put off by the hair extensions, etc. This is just a nice mesh foundation to roll your hair on. Hollywood's way of making some of those gorgeous hairdos in the period movies. That site has all kinds of fun things you can get ideas from, plus every kind of fun gel you can think of for colouring, etc. The Fashion Roll Filler sometimes works better with shorter hair and that style is generally so flattering. I hope you have a fan you can sit in front of, Beccy, maybe with a towel full of ice cubes!**bg** Or, better yeat, drink iced water/eat ice chips. I'm beached-whale size AND I have no access to air conditioning unless I show up begging on a friend's door step or stroll leisurely (yeah, right- with three little boys????!!!???) through the grocery store. It has actually occured to me to bring a lawn chair to the store and sit in the freezer section. Is it any wonder I'm thinking of doing something Eeeeeeevil to my hair? But fall is only 8 weeks away. And they will be an inch longer by then. Time heals all wounds and bad haircuts. But coloring your hair while you're pregnant? Maybe not. My NYC hairdresser started wearing Mass Murderer gloves while she was pregnant. She also limited her time in the salon. Bet you're beautiful and glowing but just don't know it. |

My babies are now teens, and my daughter and I did the Locks of Love thing a few years ago. I'm working on round 2 for Locks and although Maggie's kept it short, she's growing hers out now, too. When I was pregnant I remember being desperate for all kinds of change. My advice: go to a swanky, fancy women's store that has the best selection of hair ornaments, and spend a few dollars (pounds? I don't know where you are!) on new, fun, hair doo-dads that will allow you to do things you've never done before. My hormones are more like SINSULL's, but the needs are similar, so this year I've gotten two ornaments that have completely changed how I do my hair, which is super-thick and hangs almost to my waist: one is a double-pronged, wavy hair pin about 4" long, with rhinestones at the bend, so I look be-jeweled when I wear it. The other I got at the NEFFA craftsmen's room, it's a single piece of wavy maple about 5 or 6 inches long. Either ornament is all I need to twist my hair in an attractive bun, which is great this hot summer! Pamper yourself, my dear, you deserve it! And if you still want a change, get some sparkle gel to make your hair glitter! It's harmless, and washes right out, but it's got a slight tint and is fun! |

From: katlaughing Date: 08 Jul 03 - 11:35 AM When my bangs/fringes were growing out, they finally got long enough that I could braid them and kind of tie them back with barrettes or those snap clip things, which helped. I cannot stand to have any hair hanging down in my face, so I empathise with you.:-) I also use combs and/or those clips sans braids to keep it back. A headband gives me a headache! So, my bangs are all grown out, but I suddenly started noticing lots of shorter hairs in front blowing around my face. I asked my hairdresser about them yesterday. We figured out that a few weeks ago I thought I'd be smart and get all of the loose hairs combed out while it was still wet from shampooing, by running through it with a small-toothed comb AFTER using a wide-tooth to comb it out first. Seems our hair is very fragile, esp. if it is thin and fine like mine(!) while wet and will stretch and snap quite easily, thus all of the little shorties. I am now back to just using the wide-toothed comb until my hair is completely dry! |

My hair was always darkish brown with reddish lights, so every now & then I'd put in more red, sometimes henna. The hennaing stopped years ago when my grey hairs started taking over as the discreet grey hairs went screaming irridescent orange & were twice as obvious in my new head of reddish hair. I haven't used any color for years & have 4 boxes of dye, bought on sale, sitting on the shelf - I suppose it would be best to add them to the stuff heading for the charity shop. I don't have a greay streak in the middle of my hair - I have 2 grey streaks on the sides! My latest office ID photo I call my Russian grandmother pic, as my chubby cheeks & grey hair severely pulled back makes me look like a white-blond Russian woman I knew years ago. The bouncy pony tail does not show in the pic! I have been growing my hair for several years & can only cope with it when it's confined. It's now the longest its ever been - about a hand width above my waist & looks wonderful when I comb it out, as long as I don't move my head, then it falls about in a mess. I've spent years trying to grow it & cutting it off cos it doesn't sit well loose over my shoulders, it needs to be tied back. Does anyone remember a doll around in the 70's - push the button at her waist & her hair grew past her waist, I wanted one of those buttons. sandra Incidently, my first office ID taken 14 years ago I called my Armed-Terrorist-Shoot-on-Sight photo as it was a perfect example of my sister's observation that if most people looked like their passport pic they'd be arrested. |

I think it's the heat combined with the hormones. It's a little past shoulder length and driving me insane 'cause I've just grown out my bangs (fringe) and there are big chunks that keep falling in my face. If I use the requisite number of pins to pull it back, I look like a 5 year old let loose in her mummy's hair care basket. ERGH. I guess I'm just going to go see what kind of semi-permanent wonders they have on the market now 'cause otherwise it's all going to go a la flowbee!!!! Beccy |

When I was pregnant with my middle son I decided I wanted something different & "easy to look after". I have long straight hair, which felt boring. Having talked with the hairdresser, I had my hair cut and permed. 2 days later vitually all the curl had fallen out, the hairdresser said it hadn't taken cos I was pregnant & the solution needed longer to work. So she did it again. At first it was ok, different, but ok. Then it started driving me nuts. I found having "short" hair meant I couldn't just wash it, & either give the roots a quick blast with a hair dryer or just let it dry & then comb it thru. No I had to start taking ages carefully fiddling about, drying it just so, or it looked like I'd been pulled thru a hedge backwards. It was too short to just grab & tie out of my way when I was busy, so it flopped all over my face. The fringe (I'll NEVER have a fringe again) made my forehead itch. I also missed being able to put it up in a variety of ways & change my look as & when I felt like it. It felt really boring to be restricted to one style. I couldn't wait for it to grow out again. On the colour thing .. I started having highlights & then dying my hair when my colour started to change from blond to "mouse" ... The last time I started to let it grow out I changed my mind when I saw that I now had more than a couple of grey hairs. If you do decide you want to dye your hair I wouldn't be too hung up on the "natural" label as it is not how processed the product is that is important but things such as: are you sensitive to the ingredients, are they ones to avoid in pregnancy and ensure you avoid ones that may give off fumes that you might breathe in. As for the permanence thing. Remember, you have options, as well as the fade out type & the blend in of highlights. If you dye it & either hate it or can't cope with the routine of redoing the roots (although there is something to be said for having the excuse that you need to have a couple of hours of someone else looking after baby every 6 weeks, while you lay back, relax & have your roots done) you can always find a dye that takes you back to your original colour. |

From: Mudlark Date: 08 Jul 03 - 01:30 AM Six months pregnant seems like bad timing for hair color, not only because of chemical probs, but also because once the baby is born you are probably not going to want to have to deal with root redos, etc. My suggestion would be to spend the money instead on a really good haircut. No chemicals, and the advantage of a good haircut is not only style but how long it lasts. If you like the cut, go again in 5 mo., and it should last you until you can get a grip. My method of finding a good haircutter is to politely accost any good natural haircut I see walking around, at the market, for instance, and ask who her hairdresser is...look especially for styles you think would look good on you or fit your hair type and be easy to care for, not dependent on elaborate sets, fat rollers, etc. |

Actually, I get my hair colored professionally every five weeks and will continue until the gray chooses a reasonable pattern. At the moment i resemble a skunk - one large gray stripe dead center. The color covers but also highlights and looks as natural as it is going to until I go completely gray. My preference actually - skin tones change with hair color and dye jobs start to make a woamn (or man) look older and harder rather than more attractive. IMHO. SINS |

In Oz the brand is called Fudge and it comes in a tube. I usually put a bit just as a streak when I am on holidays. I haven't done it last week but I still have 10 or so days left before I have to go back to work. You only need to use about a teaspoon full for one streak, but I really have no idea about what sort of chemicals they contain. When I say wild colours, I mean really wild - orange, green, red, raspberry, purple, blue, yellow.. I like the raspberry. Helen |

It dried my hair out so badly it looked like matted straw. I'd had it done professionally and went back for months for free treatments to get it hydrated and to trim off the ends a little bit at a time. I've let mine go natural for several years, now, but did try Loving Care's non-permanent, washes-out-in-a-few-weeks and it was fun for a bit, plus the washing out is so gradual one hardly notices. How long is it, now? Long enough to try some different styles with combs, etc.? I agree with the others about the hormones kicking in and causing one to sometimes do something they will regret later PLUS they might also cause the chemicals to act in different ways than usual. At the very least, treat yourself to a salon shampoo and style, just for fun. I go for a shampoo about once a month, just a shampoo and it feels so great just to have someone else do it for me! kat |

You don't know and can't find out what's really in a so-called natural hair product. Poisonous mushrooms, poison ivy and cactus spines are all natural, are they not? You're pregnant. You have much to lose and very little to gain by putting chemicals on your body. My mother once tried a new brand of hair color. She did the patch test, and the test alone made her break out all over and swell up. She had to get steroids to return to normal. Her doctor told her that if she had just gone ahead and dyed her hair, it could have killed her. She notified the state government, and in subsequent visits to local stores, she saw that that product was gone from the shelves. Was it a bad batch? Was it a strange new formula? Did she have a rare sensitivity? We don't know, and we never will. In the meantime, see a stylist and see if you can't get a new hairstyle (cut and set) which will perk you up but not involve dyes, tints or chemicals. |

Those hormones are playing awful hockey with me brain and if I don't do something I will end up lobbing it all off again (did the locks of love thing two pregnancies ago) and then my husband will look wistfully and say, "Sure you look nice with short hair. You also look nice with long hair. You look nice no matter what you do to your hair." Which is very sweet, but I know he prefers it long. Now- I don't know about whether semi-permanent color is kosher whilst pregnant. Anyone know about that? (I hate to bug my friend again- she'll think I'm fishing for free haircare.) Beccy |

Mine's now going grey quite nicely so I'm going to wait for it to go white and have a purple rinse - that's one up on the poem about the purple hat, if you know it. The problem with an all over is that, within a matter of weeks you'll have regrowth, or roots and then you have to go back and get them done or put up with bi-coloured hair until it grows out/fades away. that's the boring and expensive bit. Anyway, the stage that you are at in your pregnancy is not the one where you want to be doing anything drastic. I've been there three times and can remember the feeling that I desperately wanted to change things. The problem was that, if I did, I changed my mind again within a week. Those little hormones can really give you hell. Have you looked at the temporary colourings - the ones that wash out within a few weeks? Are they OK when you're pregnant? Other than that, make a bold statement - use a can of hair mouse and go retro punk... |

I've been growing mine out for a couple years- I had it lobbed off for Locks of Love 2 years ago. I am 6 months pregnant and desperately irritated with my hair. It is boring, boring, boring right now. I had toyed with the idea of doing henna- remembering what nice effects it had on my hair when I was a teen, and also remembering that it's all natural and safe for use during pregnancy. I mentioned the idea to a friend of mine who is a very competent hairdresser. She said a big negatory. She said it's considered a metallic hair dye even though it's all natural and that if I did it, I'd have to wait for it to grow out completely before having anything else, other than henna, done again (i.e. highlighting, hair-dye, semi-permanent hair color rinse, etc...) She said if I did it, decided to do some other hair color process and didn't wait for it to grow out, that I'd risk having my hair actually smoke on my head. Now, I've not dyed my hair all over before, but I have risked highlighting once every couple years with marginal pleasure at its results. Does anyone have opinions on this? Beccy |
