Subject: Got me a Fluke! From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 09 Jul 03 - 06:46 AM Yesterday I drove up to the Vintage Fret Shop in Ashland, NH- what a sweet little town! There I got my very own Fluke ukulele! I'm having a blast- I've learned a little blues, and now I'm working on chord progressions. |
Subject: RE: Got me a Fluke! From: Mark Cohen Date: 09 Jul 03 - 07:04 AM Pick up a few of Jim Beloff's books, too (Jim is the creator of the Fluke) -- good tunes, easy arrangements. Tin Pan Alley, hapa-haole Hawaiian songs, surf music, the works. Enjoy your new friend! Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: Got me a Fluke! From: John MacKenzie Date: 09 Jul 03 - 09:34 AM Yep nice little place, we went there ourselves, and I bought myself a banjo, which I started to learn, but at present I'm at the 'Must give it another try' stage. We ate in a nice place back up the hill into the town centre, all wood beams, and good beer too. Nice guy called Colbourn runs it, due to old age I've forgotten his christian name, for which I apologise especially to him. I had met him in London many years previously, when he was part of a double act, called Colbourn & Stuart I think. Anyway I digress, glad you liked it too, and enjoy your new baby. Giok |
Subject: RE: Got me a Fluke! From: Dave Swan Date: 09 Jul 03 - 11:37 AM A wooden fingerboard is now available on the Fluke. Did you find one? Plastic under my fingers feels funny, but it's a minor quibble. I think the Fluke is great fun and sounds good. I keep a tenor Fluke at work, and it's provided plenty of pleasure. Have a look at Janet Klein's site for fun. Plonk on! Dave |

Subject: RE: Got me a Fluke! From: catspaw49 Date: 09 Jul 03 - 12:40 PM WOW.....I LOVE FLUKE!!! I'm pretty much a shellfish eater, but I do like fluke and flounder. Go ahead and chop yours up and try this: FLUKE ROMESCO Serves 4 4 fluke or flounder fillets 1/2 cup all-purpose flour Salt and pepper 1/2 cup oil or clarified butter Sauce: 2 tomatoes, peeled, seeded and chopped 4 dried chili peppers seeded and chopped 10 hazelnuts, toasted 3 cloves garlic, chopped 2 tbsp. chopped fresh mint 1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 cup olive oil 1/4 cup dry sherry 2 tbsp. white vinegar Chopped parsley To make sauce: in a blender or food processor, blend tomatoes, chilies, hazelnuts, garlic, mint and salt. Add half the olive oil, drop by drop, until mixture is thick. With the motor still running, add the rest of the oil in a steady stream. Turn off motor. Stir in sherry and vinegar. Set aside. Wash and dry the fillets. Combine flour, salt and pepper. Dust fillets with seasoned flour and dip in oil or butter. Place fillets on a hot barbecue grill. After 2 or 3 minutes, turn very carefully with a metal spatula. After another 2 or 3 minutes, turn the fish again. While fish is cooking, pour sauce in a bowl and sprinkle with parsley. Serve spooned over hot fillets. You can learn to play yours if you like of course, but I'd just go ahead and eat the damn thing!!! Spaw |

Subject: RE: Got me a Fluke! From: Midchuck Date: 09 Jul 03 - 03:01 PM Gig at Moultonboro a week from tonight. We always go over through Ashland, and allow time to stop at Vintage Fret and play a bunch of instruments. Both of the other two Woodchucks have bought instruments there now, but I haven't. It's probably time I should, but I'm out of money. I just bought this and it sort of cleaned out my "gig fund." But we're playing a lot this month... Peter. |
Subject: RE: Got me a Fluke! From: GUEST,MMario Date: 09 Jul 03 - 03:16 PM Okay - 'Spaw has posted a totally off-beat comment (Thanks 'Spaw!) so I no longer feel constrianed not to do so! My first thought on reading the title of the thread was - We've got ourselves a whale or dolphin posting! Then - when I saw who it was posting, I wondered where she had hidden her fluke(s) - because she appeared to have normal limbs when I met her... very disappointed... |
Subject: RE: Got me a Fluke! From: Frankham Date: 09 Jul 03 - 07:00 PM Janet Klein's was a site for sore eyes! Loved it. Steve Martin played that song in a movie. Was she playing a Fluke does anyone know? Frank Hamilton |
Subject: RE: Got me a Fluke! From: GutBucketeer Date: 10 Jul 03 - 12:02 AM Congratulations Animaterra! What color is your fluke? Did you try out their new flea? Welcome to the world of ukes! Gutbucketeer |
Subject: RE: Got me a Fluke! From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 10 Jul 03 - 06:34 AM Nigel, I planned to get some sort of concert-sized uke for me to use at the school where I teach. A benefactor donated 24 shiny new ukes (bright green!!) right at the end of the year. Someday I'll remember his name! Anyway, I've been diddling around since June; went to a uke workshop at the Old Songs Festival and saw some Flukes. I did try a Samick at the shop here in town, but only certain dealers sell Flukes. So it was time for a trip! I also tried the Flea but there was no contest when my baby fell into my arms! Mine is Uke-alyptus colored. Go to the website I highlighted on my first post and see how they look! There's no way Janet Klein's was a Fluke, as you'll know when you go to the fleamarketmusic.com site. So now I can play "Over the Rainbow" and I'm working on "Little Grass Shack". Next, maybe"Five Foot Two". I'm a trad. singer so this is totally new territory for me! I'm having a ball! |
Subject: RE: Got me a Fluke! From: Dave Swan Date: 10 Jul 03 - 12:12 PM Hey Frank, Janet Klein was probably playing the uke made for her by Tony Graziano. The uke she helped design can be found on his site, with lots of other pretty stuff. D |
