Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Hindero Horo From: rich-joy Date: 12 Jul 03 - 06:49 PM I forgot to also say THANKS though, to Malcolm, for his data and his link; I now know what "my" song/s is actually called, more lyrics - and it's interesting history! Long Live the Synergy of Mudcat!! Cheers! R-J |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Hindero Horo From: menzze Date: 12 Jul 03 - 06:19 AM I found the titel Air-Fa La La Lo in my vinyl collection on a live recording by the Dubliners. Liner notes only say: "Air - Fa La La Lo was learned from the singing of Ray and Archie Fisher. The song itself tells more than anyone could write about it." It was recorded on the 4th December 1964 in the Concert Hall, Cecil Sharp House, London |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Hindero Horo From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 12 Jul 03 - 05:32 AM One of the great values of Mudcat to me is precisely that you wind up getting more info and resources than was asked for. The other additions are enriching, and may help someone other than the original poster of the message. Thread-drift can be irritating, but relevant comments or queries are not thread-drift. Thread-police can be irritating too. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Hindero Horo From: rich-joy Date: 12 Jul 03 - 05:10 AM Thanks Amos! Sorry (yet again) Malcolm! You know, I've always felt really nervous about participating on Mudcat threads - in case I post something that results in me feeling a little humiliated, by the reactions of the Exceedingly Erudite amongst us to my humble and tentative offerings. (then again, I guess CAN be a little over-sensitive, too!!) ... And whilst some may get a little irked by Posters not sticking to answering only the original query, "thread drift" - OR, just plain "wrong" answers - have resulted in some very interesting discussions and some valuable additions to Mudcat and IMHO, may it long continue!! OK, back in my Colonial Box again. Cheers! R-J |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Hindero Horo From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 11 Jul 03 - 12:05 AM Anyone singing those two songs mixed up together like that, with bits missing and with that title, will have learned it from an old Dolores Keane record, or from someone who did. The two full texts, Gaelic and English, were posted several years ago: Dance to your Shadow. I may as well repeat that the original question is very specific. Unless anyone has the lyric from The New Strung Harp (it was not given in the sleeve notes) or can identify the book it was taken from, there isn't a great deal of point in randomly quoting any song that comes to mind which has the meaningless vocable horo in it; many, many Scottish Gaelic songs include it, and it is also an Eastern European dance form come to that. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Hindero Horo From: rich-joy Date: 10 Jul 03 - 11:41 PM There is a song usually labelled "Mouth Music" which has currency in the Oz folk music scene (McIntyre & Delaney have recorded it and Ragged do a lovely rendition) - is it just possible that this is the one??? Ho ro haradal ho ro haradal Ho ro haradal hind ye han dan Ho ro haradal ho ro haradal Ho ro haradal hind ye han dan Dance to your shadow when it's good to be living lad Dance to your shadow when there's nothing better near Dance to your shadow when it's good to be living lad Dance to your shadow when there's nothing better near Hind hind haradal hind hind haradal Hind hind haradal hind haradal ho Hind hind haradal hind hind haradal Hind hind haradal hind haradal ho There are chills in the river otter Pools in the river water Pools in the river And the river calls him Hind hind ... Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Hindero Horo From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 10 Jul 03 - 03:40 PM The song being looked for is the one described in the older thread to which Sorcha posted a link. It is a set of Irish Gaelic verses with a Scottish Gaelic refrain bolted on, so far as can be told, and what is probably a pastiche "Scottish" tune added. It has nothing at all to do with Air fal-al-al ó. The source book is obscure, I think, but perhaps someone can identify it. Details (from the sleevenotes if I recall correctly) in the previous thread. Failing that, Máire can be contacted via her record company; the website is at http://www.oldbridgemusic.com/. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Hindero Horo From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 10 Jul 03 - 03:32 PM Only problem is that as with most of Hugh Roberton's stuff, they are NOT translations. They're completely re-written songs which are either a semblance of the original song, or it could take the song in a different direction. They're nice songs nonetheless, but they are NOT the original by any means. Still looking for the song Amos is asking about. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Hindero Horo From: GUEST,Q Date: 10 Jul 03 - 03:27 PM Thanks, George, but I'll stick with the Roberton English translation. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Hindero Horo From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 10 Jul 03 - 03:06 PM Horo is a vocable which is extremely common. You will not be able to locate the song using Horo because of that. |
Subject: Lyr Add: AIR FAL-AL-AL O From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 10 Jul 03 - 03:03 PM Actually, Guest - Q, the song you referred to is this one, an old Gaelic love song. I don't think it has anything to do wiht the Hindero Horo. MMario has pointed to an English "version". From Air Fal-Al-Al Ó Air Fal-Al-Al O Séisd |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Hindero Horo From: GUEST,Q Date: 10 Jul 03 - 02:58 PM Thanks, MMario. The titles on the McKellar LP jacket and pressing label have "Falalolo" rather than "Falalalo," which brings up nothing in the DT. From thread 39840, post by Malcolm, I presume that AR FALALALO would be better. Hugh Roberton is credited for the lyrics in the discussions by Giok and Malcolm, but not in the DT versions. 39840: Air fa la la lo Is there another song with horo that the Guest is looking for? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Hindero Horo From: GUEST,MMario Date: 10 Jul 03 - 02:15 PM Air Falalalo is in the DT click |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Hindero Horo From: GUEST,Q Date: 10 Jul 03 - 01:32 PM I have an old LP of Scottish songs (The Tartan) by Kenneth McKellar. One track is titled "Air: Falalolo." A line in it sounds like ---dero haro, but I will have to listen again. I have not found any song "Falalolo." On the lp, it states "traditional, arr. Sharples." There are lyrics with it and I would like to know if it has any relation to the song requested here- and if not, what "trad." song it is from. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Hindero Horo From: Sorcha Date: 10 Jul 03 - 11:44 AM There is a bit of information but no lyrics in this thread. |
Subject: Lyr Req: Hindero Horo From: Amos Date: 10 Jul 03 - 10:44 AM The following was placed in the middle of a different thread on Classic English titles. I thought it deserved some independent attention. The site is legit. A Subject: Sorry for the offtopic, but... From: GUEST,Anastassia - PM Date: 10 Jul 03 - 08:49 AM PLEASE, we need your help! We are Russian musicians, playing ethnic, espessialy Celtic music. You can see address of our Web-site at the bottom of the message. We loved very much the song "Hindero Horo" from Maire Ní Chathasaigh's "New strung harp" but we can not find the lyrics in the Internet. There are not too many experts of Scottish Gaelic in Russia :), even those who understand something by ear can not complete the text. Would you be so kind to contact us with Maire or somebody who can share the text with us? Guys from snowy country never forget you! Thank you in advance, Anastassia (Russian-Celtic harper :) http://mervent.celtic.ru |
