Hey all,
My buddy who just joined the Army is stationed at Fort Sam Houstan in San Antonio TX. He called to ask me to make this post.
As an avid fan and performer of Irish music, he was wanting to know if there were any open sessions in or around the San Antonio TX area, when and where they might be.
After 9 weeks of basic training, he's jonsin' to hear other performers, and perhaps do a little singing himself. I will copy this thread to a word document to send him in a letter as soon as I get any info.

Thanks for your help! :)

He can head an hour north to Austin and find some great sessions there; BD Riley's on 6th Street on Sunday evenings there a pretty trad irish group of sessioners ... they start about 8 - but he could ahead to be sure. Great Pub, great players, nice folks ...

Say, are there any in Houston?

Young fellow in the oil industry has been impressed with the Irish sessions here in Halifax, and is wondering about Houston.

Austin Friends of Traditional Music

You might check here. Might be something of interest. You might want to do a google.com search for 'Irish music San Antonio', too...some combination of words like that.

Brewmoon N San Pedro -Thursday- 8 ish until done.

Tends to draw classical Violinists, but they can be outnumbered if enough fidders turn up - which sadly is becomming a rare event - Otherwise if you like the local Classical weenies playing at being Irish it aint that bad.

The Irishpeople in S A tend to keep it in the family, some house sessions .. excellent! but you need to know whos who to get in, or be invited.

Other events that might be interesting ... hanging of strays at the north end of town ...KKK mostly.

Then there is the now infamous invasion of drifters who don't know about the midsummer bugs and heat .... well worth the wait. In the meantime do not eat at any restaurants which tend to be staffed by these people, did I say dishwater in yer soup?

Burger joints are safe, only hiring local school kids who tend not to be vindictive or hateful.

The River Walk alone is more than enough reason to get out there and play, sessions all ova some nights and great as well. Be able to play a tune BEFORE you take out yer thang! Don't say you were not warned ... the river is cold and fairly deep!

Austin is up there!and to the Oirish down there its Pom town, ie they stay the hell away from it... I can't say I blame them ..

Did you know Robert Johnson the Bluesman made a bunch of his recordings in San Antonio

Have a nice time in South Texas where the folks love ya that much they
shoot in the ass first, then ask the questions!
