Hi all,

I'll be spending next week in Maine (around Bremen)and am wondering if there are any open sings in area. If anyone knows of a contra dance, I'd like to hear about that too.

Hi Celeste -- the two links that George posted refer to seessions that are actually in Portsmouth NH, on the border with Maine. After checking the map, I would opine that it will take about two hours driving time from Bremen.

However, unless you're coming from Canada or Vermont, your route to Bremen will lead you through Portsmouth. The Friday evening sessions start around 4:15 and run till nearly 9. The shanty/forebitter session is tomorrow and runs from 3:30 to 7:30 PM.

There are more detailed directions to the Press Room ( 77 Daniel St. - US Route 1) on previous Shanty session threads.

That should have read US Route 1 South; Rt 1 North is State Street which parallels Daniel -- T

Thank you for your help! Portsmouth won't work out for us this time around due to timing and geography, but it occurs to me we should just come up some other time. It's not that far from Boston.

Meanwhile, I found a Web reference to an occasional song swap on Wednesday evenings in Damariscott (really close to Bremen) at the Salt Bay Trading Company on Main St. If I learn any more about it, I'll return the favor and update the thread with that information.

Hi Celeste -- We'll be looking forward to meeting you at some other time then. The Friday sessions are every week and the Shanty sessions the second Saturday of the month. Keep watching the 'Cat for updates.

Weds JULY 9 from 7-9 pm
Alden Robinson & Friends will host a Celtic session
at the Rogue River restaurant on Main St in Damariscotta
Singers and players welcome
Participants will recieve a free beverage
The restaurant will be serving light fare
Restaurant 207-563-2992

It has been every 2nd Wednesday of the month but has been cancelled for August in lieu of a hired musician. The autumn schedule is inconclusive. If you call the Rogue River and ask about the session it might convince them that it is a good thing to continue.

Looks to me like Salt Bay Trading Company is your best bet. Fred and Julia of Castlebay should be able to add detail:[e-mail]

Do stop at Sarah's in Wiscasset, just before the bridge on your right, for a wonderful meal and sometimes live evening entertainment.

There's also the Chocolate Church Arts Center in Bath and Round Top Center in Newcastle.

Thanks for the advice Charley. This is our third vacation in the Wiscasset-Damariscotta area (just the first time we thought to try to find some people to sing with). We know Sarah's from other trips, but the other two are new to us. We'll check them out. By the way, if you've never tried it, the Indian pudding at the Sheepscott Inn is heavenly.

Time to pack up and go!

Well this is prbably too late to catch you but there is a regular concert series at the Little Brown Church in Round Pond sponsored and run by Fred Gosbee and Julia Lane of Castlebay (see above for contact info). The concerts happen on Wednesday evenings and admission is by donation, proceeds shared with the church. Great fun but the pews are very hard so bring a cushion.
