Subject: RE: duelling banjo's From: Sam L Date: 14 Jul 03 - 10:53 AM I don't, but I want to register my protest that Duelling Banjos is played on a guitar and a banjo. What's the world coming to with all this doublespeak and misdirection? |
Subject: RE: duelling banjo's From: X Date: 14 Jul 03 - 11:15 AM I tabbed out an arr. of the tune for ONE banjo...."Duellin' Banjo." |
Subject: RE: duelling banjo's From: Steve Parkes Date: 14 Jul 03 - 11:53 AM Is it OK to bring a guitar to a banjo session? Forget I asked that! Steve |
Subject: RE: duelling banjo's From: GUEST,Martin Gibson Date: 14 Jul 03 - 12:15 PM Dueling Banjos was released as "Feudin' Banjos" by Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith & Don Reno (1955) If I'm not mistaken, Smith played tenor and Reno 5-string. Arthur Smith sued when the Deliverence movie came out and made a bundle off of the stolen song. |
Subject: RE: duelling banjo's From: X Date: 14 Jul 03 - 12:31 PM You're not mistaken. |
Subject: RE: duelling banjo's From: Noreen Date: 14 Jul 03 - 12:41 PM Geoff the Duck's version for banjo and kazoo has to be heard to be believed...! :0) |
Subject: RE: duelling banjo's From: GUEST,Martin Gibson Date: 14 Jul 03 - 02:41 PM I don't think I need to hear it to believe it. On second thought, which instrument answered which? Wasn;t there a video game called Banjo Kazooie? |
Subject: RE: duelling banjo's From: oombanjo Date: 14 Jul 03 - 03:00 PM I warned you !!!!!!!!!! |
Subject: RE: duelling banjo's From: Geoff the Duck Date: 15 Jul 03 - 11:21 AM Does anyone know much about "Feudin' Banjos"? How similar, or different, was the tune, compared to the well known (later) version? Quack! GtD. |
Subject: RE: duelling banjo's From: Steve Latimer Date: 15 Jul 03 - 12:28 PM I have Feudin' Banjos. It's pretty similar to the Eric Weisburg version that was used in Deliverance. The Darlings (really the Dillards) performed Duelling Banjos on an episode of The Andy Griffith show a few years before Deliverance came out. |
Subject: RE: duelling banjo's From: X Date: 15 Jul 03 - 03:05 PM You can hear the Dillards arr. of "Duellin' Banjos" on their record, "Backporch Bluegrass." |

Subject: RE: Dueling Banjos From: Deckman Date: 21 Jul 03 - 08:25 AM If my memory is correct, and it rarely is these days, I believe that Mike Russo of the Portland, Oregon area was first approached to do the guitar part for the film. He turned it down, I don't recall the reason. Does anyone else remember this story? Cheers, Bob |
Subject: RE: Dueling Banjos From: Inükshük Date: 21 Jul 03 - 08:55 AM God, the tune must go further back than 1955. I used to listen to "Mocking Banjo" on the radio. It was done with a mandolin answering the banjo or vice versa. Somehow I remember the old fiddlers playing a very similar tune that they called "The End of a Dream." |
Subject: RE: Dueling Banjos From: Steve Latimer Date: 21 Jul 03 - 03:41 PM I just listened to Feudin' Banjos again the other day. It's amazing how fast that Arthur Smith could flat pick that tenor. Don Reno moves it along pretty quickly himself. |
Subject: RE: Dueling Banjos From: GUEST Date: 21 Jul 03 - 04:06 PM Rumor has it that Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith gave Don Reno a few guitar lessons in the early 1950's. "Country Boy Rock & Roll" is probably the opening salvo in the current flatpicknig wars, not to detract one bit from my all-time fav Doc Watson. |
Subject: RE: Dueling Banjos From: Bernard Date: 21 Jul 03 - 07:33 PM I've got a recording somewhere of 'The End of a Dream' played on banjos... it's definitely where the idea came from! |
Subject: RE: Dueling Banjos From: X Date: 22 Jul 03 - 12:45 AM "End Of A Dream" with banjos is on the old album "New Dimensions In Bluegrass" along with "Duellin' Banjos." |
Subject: RE: Dueling Banjos From: GUEST Date: 22 Jul 03 - 02:46 PM "Dueling Banjos" album from the early 70's was a slightly re-worked re-release of "New Directions In Banjo and Bluegrass" by Weissberg and Brickman, about 1962. Removed two or three numbers and reordered two or three others, substituting the Mandel/Weissberg tune from the movie. This is still found used in Goodwill and Salvation Army stores, the 1962 Elektra is certainly not easy to find. Clarence White does about half of the guitar work, but only the earlier record tells which breaks are his. |
Subject: RE: Dueling Banjos From: Mark Clark Date: 22 Jul 03 - 06:28 PM The original “New Directions” album is up on eBay for the next couple of days. A CD of the newer release is up as well. - Mark |
Subject: RE: Dueling Banjos From: X Date: 23 Jul 03 - 12:30 AM Ah..The album I'm talking about is called "New Dimensions In Bluegrass" and it was released in the early 60's along with "Folk Banjo Styles." The album in question is now: (Warner Brothers BS 2720) |
Subject: RE: Dueling Banjos From: Mark Clark Date: 23 Jul 03 - 02:32 AM The title of the album on eBay is “New Dimensions In Banjo And Bluegrass” on Elektra Records #EKS 7238 stereo. Sorry for the error in my post. - Mark |
