Subject: Lyr Req: 'Come back Baby' from Stefan Grossman LP
From: GUEST,Marck
Date: 14 Jul 03 - 10:35 AM

Hi, Mudcatters!

Please,

I'm looking for the lyrics of the song "Come back baby".
I listened it on the Stefan Grossman's LP "How to play Blues Guitar n.2".
Second question: do you know who wrote it (music and lyrics)?

Thanks!

The definitive recording of this (on guitar) is Dave Van Ronk's. Somehow it's stuck in my memory that it's a Ray Charles composition, but I could be wrong. "Well come back baby, baby please don't go, well the way I love you, you'll never know....come back baby, let's talk it over, one more time. If I could holler, like a mountain jack, I'd climb this mountain, call my baby back, well come back baby, let's talk it over, one more time." That's all that comes to me at the moment.

I remember Bert Jansch doing this song and it must be on one of his albums though which one I'm not sure.
Sorry

This song dates back so far that it's hard to decide who wrote it. I think that the verse about the Mountain Jack that Steve-o is quoting is from "How long, how long blues" and has been inserted. Walter Davis recorded a "New Come Back Baby" around 1937, which is interesting - many sources credit this as the original, but the "New" in the title suggests new lyrics to an older tune. The Ray Charles version is credited to Mance Lipscomb: As far as I can see, so is the Stefan Grossman version. I have these lyrics from a forgotten source, which purport to be the Mance Lipscomb lyrics, but I don't have a recording to verify them.

COME BACK BABY

Come back, baby, Please don't go
The way I love you, baby you'll never know.
Come back, baby, let's talk it over one more
time.

My hearts in touble and in misery,
Ain't got nobody talk sweet talk to me,
Come back baby, let's talk it over one more time.

Hmmmmm, lonesome day,
Seem like tomorrow gonna be the same old way.
Come back baby, let's talk it over one more time.

Went up on the mountain, looked down at the sun,
Ain't seen nobody love me like you have done,
Come back baby, let's talk it over one more time.

Since Mance Lipscomb was not a Blues singer in the strict sense, I think it unlikely that he actually wrote the song.

Van Ronk learned the version he recorded from Dave Woods a fine guitar player around NYC(he played guitar with DVR in the Hudson Dusters).

I open my cd with this song (it's in the auction as we speak with a link to clips. I did quite a bit of research, and while it is close to DVR version, I credited Lipscomb.

Come Back Baby

Come back, baby, Mamma please don't go
The way I love you, you'll never know
Come back baby, let's talk it over
One more time

The way I love you, tell the world it's true
No one can love you, the way I do
Come back baby, let's talk it over
One more time

instr

Come along old freight train, mean engineer
Took my baby left me standing here
Come back baby, let's talk it over
One more time

If I could holler, like a mountain jack
I'd climb this mountain, call my baby back
Come back baby, let's talk it over
One more time

repeat 1

I have a Walter Davis version titled Come BacK Baby as opposed to New Come Back Baby - it's possible he recorded two versions.

Here's another version. Lyrics copied from http://www3.clearlight.com/~acsa/introjs.htm?/~acsa/songfile/COMEBACK.HTM :

COME BACK, BABY
As sung by Lightnin' Hopkins

Come back, baby. Baby, please don't go.
Well, I love you and I want the world to know.
Come back, baby. Let's talk it over one more time.

This old world wasn't made in one day.
Come back, baby. Don't go away.
Come back, baby. Let's talk it over one more time.

You know it's been a long time since I saw you smile.
Makes me think of the time you was a child.
Come back, baby. Let's talk it over one more time.

If you ain't coming back, baby, please let me know.
Then I won't have to worry about you not coming back no more.
Come back, baby. Let's talk it over one more time.

The 30's "new" version was his woman just leaving, the older one has him two-timing and trying to kind of apologize....

I listened to this song via Spotify, and I found it had several more verses than the one posted by CraigS back in 2003. Did Lipscomb record it more than once? Maybe, but I don't think so.

COME BACK, BABY
As sung by Mance Lipscomb on "You Got to Reap What You Sow" (Arhoolie, 1993) 4:04

Come back, baby; please don't go.
The way I love you, baby, you'll never know.
Come back, baby; let's talk it over one more time.

My heart's in trouble and in misery.
Ain't got nobody talk sweet talk to me.
Come back, baby; let's talk it over one more time.

Lmmmmm, lonesome day,
Seem like tomorrow gonna be same ol' way.
Come back, baby; can't we talk it over one more time?

I left her standin' in doorway cryin'.
Hated to go, leave that girl behin'.
Come back, baby; let's talk it over one more time.

I love you, babe; I can't help myself.
Don't get you, don't want nobody else.
Come back, baby; let's talk it over one more time.

Went up on the mountain, looked down at the sun.
Ain't seen nobody love me like you have done.
Come back, baby; let's talk it over one more time.

I love you; I can't help myself.
Don't get you, don't want nobody else.
Come back, baby; let's talk it over one more time.

Come back, baby; can't we talk it over one more time?

Come back, baby; baby, please don't go.
Way I love you, girl, you'll never know.
Come back, baby; let's talk it over one more time.

Down to the river, couldn't get across.
Jumped on a alligator, thought he was some horse.
Come back, baby; let's talk it over one more time.

COME BACK, BABY
As sung by Dave Van Ronk on "Folksinger" (1967)

Hey, come back, baby; mama, please don't go.
Yes, the way I love you, you'll never know.
Yes, come back, baby; let's talk it over one more time.

I love you, baby; tell the world I do.
I don't want nobody else but you.
Well, come back, baby; let's talk it over—.

A long old train, mean engineer
Took my baby, left me standin' here.
Yes, come back, baby; let's talk it over one more time.

If I could holler like a mountain jack,
I'd climb this mountain, call my baby back.
Yes, come back, baby; let's talk it over—.

Hey, come back, baby; mama, please don't go.
Yes, the way I love you, you'll never know.
Yes, come back, baby; let's talk it over—.

Apparently Lightnin' Hopkins recorded more than one version of this song. These lyrics are different than the ones I posted on 05 Nov 2005:

COME BACK, BABY
As sung by Lightnin' Hopkins on "Complete Aladdin Recordings"

[Spoken:] This is that "Come Back Baby." Now, I know she gone be back one day.

Now, come back baby; darlin', please don't go.
You know, the way I love you—will never know.
Come back now, baby; can't we talk it over one more time?

Seem like I hear, baby, that bad rooster crow.
You know that I thought about you, and [it] hurt me so.
Come back now, baby; can't we talk it over one more time?

[Spoken:] I bet she'll be back.

Now, listen, baby, what I'm 'on' tell to you:
Remember poor Lightnin' out of all in this world that you do.
Come back now, baby; can't we talk it over one more time?

Baby, you know I go over this mornin' 'bout the break of day,
You know I got worried when I started out on my way.
Come back now, baby; can't we talk it over one more time?

COME BACK BABY
As recorded by Walter Davis, 1940.

Oh, come back, baby; please don't go.
Lord, the way I love you, you'll never know.
Come back, baby; can't we talk it over one more time?

My heart is full o' sorrow; my eyes is full o' tears.
Lord, we been together for so many years.
Come back, baby; can't we talk it over one more time?

You know this world wasn't made in one day.
Can't we talk it over just before you go away?
Come back, baby; can't we talk it over one more time?

Come back, baby; don't break up my home.
You know I'm gonna miss you after you've gone.
Come back, baby; can't we talk it over one more time?

I begged you all night, all the night before
Please to never leave me; don't never leave me no more.
Come back, baby; can't we talk it over one more time?

Now you know, babe, you the onliest one I love.
Lord, I['d] just [as] soon to be dead, goin' to the Lord above.
Come back, baby; can't we talk it over one more time?

COME BACK BABY
As sung by Carolina Slim, 1950.

Feel kind o' funny; somethin' wrong with me.
My baby's gone and left me and I'm lonesome as I can be.
Come back, baby; let's try it over one more time.

You left me, baby, all(?) without a cause.
Guess I got to leave you now up in the hands of the Lord.
Come back, baby; let's try it over one more time.

I love you, baby; you know it's true.
Look what a fool, honey, I've been for you.
Come back, baby; let's try it over one more time.

Come back, baby; please come back to me.
I'll make you just as happy [as] any girl could be.
Come back, baby; let's try it over one more time.

I love you, baby; tell the world I do.
Look what a fool, honey, I've been for you.
Come back, baby; let's try it over one more time.

COME BACK BABY
As sung by Pinetop Perkins on "Time Brings About a Change: A Floyd Dixon Celebration" (2006)

Now, come back, baby; darlin', please don't go.
Now, the way I love you, you'll never know.
So come back, darlin'; let's talk it over one more time.

Now you know this world wasn't made in one day.
Now can we talk it over 'fore you goes(?) away?.
Come back, darlin'; let's talk it over one more time.

Now my heart is full o' sorrow; eyes is full o' tears.
Not even gone twenty-four hours; seem like a million years.
Come back, darlin'; can't we talk it over one more time?

Now I cried last night, and the night before.
I found a true love; ain't gonna try no more.
Come back, darlin'; can't we talk it over one more time?
