"Ma robe a toujours ses reprises" means "my dress keeps having its mendings" / "my dress has still its mendings" ("toujours" = "always" but very often "still")

Wow! What a noise! The song linked by Wolfgang (by Marsac et al.) has nothing to do with the song by Vanderlove. Was that supposed to be humorous? Like to near busted my eardrums. People have been sued for less!

Let's see, at $500,000 per ear drum, $1,000,000 for mental cruelty, and double to cover legal costs---

Wolfgang, I see what you mean... that's a very different version from the one I remember. Think "Dominique" with three-part harmony...

Cheers,
Michael

Thank you all for the info and translation!

Yes, Wolfgang, hearing it sung by three beautiful French girls while under the influence certainly was an incredible experience. (Not that JB was a slouch as a singer.)

Cheers,
Michael

Bleus cd av897 (Her latest?)
Listen to extracts from "Silver"- she has a strong, intriguing voice that makes you want to hear more. Silver
Ballade en Novembre is on Anne Vanderlove "Escales" and is listed as a second version.
www.friendship-first.com - the index lists many artistes. The US(English) entry is not up.

What a great song! I wish I had it on a recording with Brel.
A short audio of that song was disappointing for me. I think it should be sung in a different way. I guess you heard it somewhat differently, Michael, for this song to stay so long in your memory.

Wolfgang

Snuffy, your rough clean-up is pretty good! I wouldn't attempt it with my forgotten school French.
Your questioned line- My dress was always mended, I think may be a little better translation.
The north wind increases, it plays with my hair...
A little more idiomatic English to polish it up.

Thanks, michaelr, for remembering it, and Snuffy for a pretty good translation.
Anne Vanderlove has some cds out, I would like to hear them.

Here's a rough clean-up on Sorcha's Babelfish findings

Leave me with my memories,
Leave me with my dead loves,
It is time to close the door,
It is time to go to sleep
I did not always look smart
My hair was in my eyes
But that's how he took me,
I think maybe he loved me a little

{ Refrain: }
It's raining
On the garden, on the shore
And if my eyes are wet
That's because it's raining in my face.

The North wind which is building up
Is enjoying itself alone in my hair
I was not always quite beautiful,
But I think maybe he loved me a little
My dress [is always rumpled?]
And I always have unruly hair
But that's how he took me,
I think maybe I loved him a lot

{ Refrain }

If I've burned a lot of candles
Since the last time we met
And if I remain faithful to him,
What use is so much virtue to me?
Leave me with my dead loves!
Leave me with my memories
But before closing the door,
Leave me the time to laugh about it
The time to try to smile about it...

{ Refrain }
Leave me the time to laugh about it

I had the hair in the eyes...

found a biographical note here

She is Dutch, born in the Hague in 1943 (real name van der Leeuwe) but brought up by her schoolteacher grandparents in Brittany. The song has a very Brel character to it. I'll try to improve the translation when I have more time to spare.

"s'amoncelle" = "piles itself up".

Funny weather they have in France!

Well, here is what Babblefish (Mudcat Translator) says....no line breaks. Sorry.

That one leaves me with my memories, That one leaves me with my died loves, It is time to close the door, It is made time to go to sleep I were not always well put I had the hair in the eyes But thus it had taken to me, I believe well that he liked me a little { Refrain: } It rains On the garden, on the shore And if I have water in the eyes It is that it rains me On the face. The wind of the North which amoncelle only has fun in my hair I were not always quite beautiful, But I believe that he liked me a little My dress always has his recoveries And I always have the insane hair But thus he had taken to me, I believe that I liked it much { Refrain } If I melted as well of candles Since time as one is not seen And if I remain to him faithful, is A what used to me so much as virtue? That one leaves me with my dead loves! That one leaves me with my memories But before closing the door, That one leaves me time to laugh at it time to try to smile about it... { Refrain } That one leaves me time to laugh at it

I think they should be added...........

BALLAD EN NOVEMBRE

Paroles: Anne Vanderlove. Musique: Anne Vanderlove, Yani Spanos
© 1967 Eco Music et Comufra

Qu'on me laisse à mes souvenirs,
Qu'on me laisse à mes amours mortes,

{Refrain:}

{Refrain}

Si j'ai fondu tant de chandelles
Depuis le temps qu'on ne s'est vus
Et si je lui reste fidèle,
A quoi me sert tant de vertu ?
Qu'on me laisse à mes amours mortes !
Qu'on me laisse à mes souvenirs
Mais avant de fermer la porte,
Qu'on me laisse le temps d'en rire
Le temps d'essayer d'en sourire...

{Refrain}

Qu'on me laisse le temps d'en rire

Anne Vanderlove does seem to be French or based in France. Lyrics in French found on Google but seemingly no English.

Well, that took a twist, but the lyrics seem to have come up with a Vanderlove email site connection.
(If the lyrics don't show at first click on the little letter-mail symbol and then use "back" - may not be necessary)

When you search the paroles website directly, click on Titres in the left column and the alphabet for titles comes up. Most Brel songs are in this website.

The song is by Anne Vanderlove, music by her and Vani Spanos, 1967, Eco Music et Comufra. It was sung by Brel.

The French words are at http://www.paroles.net/chansons/11339.htm
Ballade en novembre

The website http://www.paroles.net is the main source for songs in French, or popular in France. It is a gigantic site, so your searches may take a while. Do not attempt in Netscape.

The name Vanderlove suggests that the song may have been written in English. I will take a look later.

The current Jacques Brel threads brought back some long-slumbering memories:

Four score and seven years ago (actually, it was around 1975), when I was known to indulge occasionally in mind-altering substances, my buddy and I (who used to play guitars and sing Donovan and Dylan songs together) met a trio of charming young French women who sang les chansons. I was blazing on acid (which had caused me to forget my guitar at home) and could only sit there dumbstruck while they sang, in glorious three-part harmony, a JB song called, I believe, "Ballade au Novembre". It was the most beautiful thing I'd ever heard!

I don't really know any French, but my hazy memory suggests the first line may have been something like "qu'u me laisse a mes souvenirs".

I would be most grateful if someone could provide the lyrics and, if possible, a translation.

Cheers,
Michael
