In fact the Nua Duanaire reference was incorrect - back to Príosún Cluain Meala again!

I finally found a partial set of words, with a translation, in notes I think I got from Ian Lee, who teaches part of the Traditional Singing Workshop at the Willy Clancy Summer School. I'll transcribe them when I get a chance. I have no recollection of his discussion of the song - which looks like part of a lonnger one. I should have Nioclás's recording somewhere, also...and will compare.

It is Nioclaás Toibín who is singing 'Bóthar Cluain Meala'. The liner notes gives a little information about the songs on the CD, but no lyrics.

I haven't found it in any collections I have either. I found the album at www.cic.ie. It features Liam Clancy and Nioclás Tóibín among others. I am tempted to buy it myself, but I have been rather CD-happy lately. Do you have the CD? Are there liner notes with it? Is the name of the singer mentioned?

Sorry, can't help with the words. However the literal translation of the title makes no mention of the Clonmel road. It translates as "By the sea east in Ring." It could also mean "by the sea east at the cape/promontary." There are many places on the coast of Ireland called by various anglicised versions of "Rinn" but as this song was recorded by the people of Ring in Waterford, I assume that is the place mentioned. Are you sure you are not confusing "Cois mara = seaside" with "Cluain Meala = Clonmel". The song "Príosún Chluain Meala / The Jail of Clonmel" is also sung in Ring.

Could any of the Mudcat's Irish speakers help? A friend and I are looking for the words to this Irish song which is on a CD entitled 'Cois Mara Thoir sa Rinn', a live recording of a concert held by the people of Ring, Co Waterford in 1998 to raise money for their school. We have already searched the Mudcat's archives.
