Subject: Lyr Add: CLONMEL ROAD From: MartinRyan Date: 18 Sep 03 - 04:58 PM Here's the translation as I have it: CLONMEL ROAD I have a question for you – where do you live, tramp (horseman)? I live in a guest house on the Clonmel Road A question for you – are you…. How is your wife or is she alive at all? She is very sick in bed which causes me great torment And no doctor can cure her illness That's not how you are and your dearly beloved dead You'll….. You'll have money in your pocket and plenty to spend And a young woman beside you in bed I wouldn't marry you and avoid my family and dearly beloved And leave my small children without father or mother Because I have to raise them, to wash and clean them And I will not love any other woman except the mother of the children I'm not sure I'm any the wiser! I'll see what I can find out... Regards |

Subject: RE: Help, Lyrics: 'Bóthar Cluain Meala' From: MartinRyan Date: 15 Sep 03 - 12:31 PM In fact the Nua Duanaire reference was incorrect - back to Príosún Cluain Meala again! I finally found a partial set of words, with a translation, in notes I think I got from Ian Lee, who teaches part of the Traditional Singing Workshop at the Willy Clancy Summer School. I'll transcribe them when I get a chance. I have no recollection of his discussion of the song - which looks like part of a lonnger one. I should have Nioclás's recording somewhere, also...and will compare. Regards |

Subject: RE: Help, Lyrics: 'Bóthar Cluain Meala' From: GUEST Date: 20 Jul 03 - 05:50 AM It is Nioclaás Toibín who is singing 'Bóthar Cluain Meala'. The liner notes gives a little information about the songs on the CD, but no lyrics. |
Subject: RE: Help, Lyrics: 'Bóthar Cluain Meala' From: GUEST,JFM Date: 19 Jul 03 - 08:48 PM Thanks a lot everyone for taking the time to respond, even if we did drawn a blank. The CD in question is on its way to me but I'm told the sleeve notes (or booklet) don't have the lyrics we are after. Hopefully I'll be able to make out the words from listening. I may have to come back on this. |

Is the name of the singer mentioned? Brían |

Subject: RE: Help, Lyrics: 'Bóthar Cluain Meala' From: GUEST,JFM Date: 18 Jul 03 - 08:43 PM Learaí na Láibe, if you go back to my original message you'll see that I'm looking for a particular song 'Bóthar Cluain Meala' = The Clonmel Road, which I said is on a CD called 'Cois Mara Thoir sa Rinn' = In Ring by the Sea, OK? Sorry if I confused you. |
Subject: RE: Help, Lyrics: 'Bóthar Cluain Meala' From: David Ingerson Date: 18 Jul 03 - 05:00 PM Sorry. Can't find the words in my collection. DAvid |
Subject: RE: Help, Lyrics: 'Bóthar Cluain Meala' From: GUEST Date: 18 Jul 03 - 04:29 PM Sorry, can't help with the words. However the literal translation of the title makes no mention of the Clonmel road. It translates as "By the sea east in Ring." It could also mean "by the sea east at the cape/promontary." There are many places on the coast of Ireland called by various anglicised versions of "Rinn" but as this song was recorded by the people of Ring in Waterford, I assume that is the place mentioned. Are you sure you are not confusing "Cois mara = seaside" with "Cluain Meala = Clonmel". The song "Príosún Chluain Meala / The Jail of Clonmel" is also sung in Ring. Learaí na Láibe |
