Subject: RE: Welltemperedstringband.com! From: GUEST,Pete Peterson Date: 14 Aug 03 - 01:30 PM I'm not sure how we came up with the name-- there were several thoughts going through our minds- (such as they are) 1) all three of us are admirers of J.S. Bach (in fact, Eileen's best instrument is keyboard, which she doesn't even play in Well Tempered S.B.) 2) John Cohen once wrote an essay on the two differnt types of old-time music (this is in the Old Time Song Book, alias the New Lost City Ramblers Song Book) and distinguished the "contrapuntal, well-organized" sound of the Carter Family and Charlie Poole from the "Hell broke loose in Georgia" bands of the Skillet Lickers and Earl Johnson. We knew who we wanted to sound like! 3) I know bands that do whole SETS in a single key. Like Bach in Das Wohltemperte Klavier, we play in LOTS of keys, depending on who';s singing lead and what key suits that voice best. 4) And we try to get along with each other and the world. Way too much information? |
