Subject: Mudcat Cookbooks: They're Here!
From: NicoleC
Date: 18 Jul 03 - 04:08 PM

UPS brought me a big ol' box today, chock full of exciting and action packed Mudcat Cookbooks, and they look absolutely beautiful! I am happy to report that each and every cookbook sold will raise about $10 for the 'Cat's operating expenses, surpassing original expectations.

If you HAVEN'T reserved yours yet (what have you been thinking!) send me a PM for all the payment information. There are a few unclaimed copies left...

If you've reserved one or more but haven't sent the payment yet (and you know who you are), better get that in the mail/PayPal.

If I've got your payment, I'll be busy packing up cookbooks tonight and sending 'em your way.

If you've been behind in your MudCat donations, you can make it easier on yourself and just make one payment to me with whatever extra you wish to donate. I'll pass it on to Max with the cookbook profit.

Just a recap:
"Whiskey Before Breakfast (and Other Meals from the Mudcat Cafe)" costs just $15 each.

For your $15 you get:
* Shipping anywhere in the world. Overseas shipping will be sent economy.
* 140+ pages of recipes, tunes and miscellanea in 5 chapters. The recipes are fully indexed.
* A reference section with cooking time charts and measurement conversions.
* The warm and fuzzy feeling of donating to the 'Cat while getting some new material for your kitchen repertoire.

ORDER YOURS TODAY!

Paging Penny in Virginia!

Please PM me about your order.

-------------------------

Okay folks, I have one copy left!

Fully 1/3 of the cookbook reservations have not yet either sent payment or made arrangements with me. If you HAVE a reservation and you have not either sent payment or have not made arrangements with me for when to expect that payment, you need to do so NOW. No deadline yet, but I'm trying to move and I don't want to take yet another box with me :)

So at this point, I'm taking slots on a waiting list for any cancelled reservations. If there are enough folks on the waiting list (more than about 15 copies or so), I will be happy to get more cookbooks printed up. Otherwise, it's first come, first served with the single remaining book and those currently reserved books who may become orphaned.

Thanks to everyone for the great response, and I hope those of you who have received your books already are having fun.

In addition to cookbook sales, there have been extra donations to the tune of $120 so far. I'm happy to report that it looks like the cookbook project will raise over $600 for the Mudcat!

This cookbook is GREAT! As for the name mixup - if that's the worst error, then we're doing well. I'd rather have the error be my name, than have the error be in the ingredient list.

only half a pound of butter to 2 qts of peas and 8 qts of water? Not that much...it's the only fat in the recipe - ends up about 1.3% fat...which is pretty low.

PS do you think you'll do a reprint for Chritmas gifts?

Bekki, I'm still trying to figure out if I have one more for you.

I doubt there will be a reprint anytime soon. First, I don't have time to mess with this now -- I'm sorry to say that my lag time shipping is hovering around 2 weeks now, which I think is bad. Secondly, there's just not enough interest. If everyone who said they were going to buy one actually did, I'd have already done a reprint ans dold through those. As it is, I only have some nibbles for a few copies for Christmas, and it's not enough to cover the costs of a reprint. Thirdly, I'm not sure I could definately make a Christmas deadline in time for ya'll to re-ship out anyway as we are into October.

I will, however, keep rough tabs on who wants more and see how it goes down the road. Maybe a 2nd edition next year? Everyone who was on the waiting list got (or will get) a copy when folks dropped out or didn't pay. Those of you who have a copy understand now why I didn't want to send out electronic versions, but that IS still an option. Let me know what ya'll think of that now.

I will consider a second printing on the following condition:

I have a MINIMUM of *10* paid for orders.

At that quantity, it'll be a wash Mudcat-wise, but I won't be losing money either. Several of you have PM'd me -- if you are serious let me know by next Monday and I'll take a head count. To meet Xmas deadlines, I'll ship direct if you want. Overseas shipping in time for Xmas will be dicey, though...

Got mine here in Oz, yesterday!! THANKS Nicole for a wonderful job!!

(I wonder though, whether we should've all put what country we are from, coz of the differences between some measurements in the British and American IMPERIAL systems???)

Ok, now how's LtS's DESSERTS book going??!!
(sorry, Liz!)

Cheers!

Yes, I've been wondering too. Still haven't got mine yet. I guess mine and Alison's will probably arrive about the same time, seeing as we're both in Sydney.

(... it'll be worth the wait)

I'm starting to take that cliche of the "slow boat" seriously. My ancestors made it across the Atlantic in a leaky tub in the 1600's faster than that service!

Yeah, my great grandfather came out to West Aussie as a convict, from dear old England, and it only took his sailing ship (the Corona), a mere 67 days - in 1866 !!!
At least a month LESS than the US postal service in 2003, would you say, Nicole???!!!

But, it's great to have it, however long it took!

Cheers!

Yay, my cookbook arrived today! Congratulations, Nicole. It looks really interesting.

Now where to start?

Maybe I'll start with the Guinness cake, with the 6 bottles of Guinness.

When I glanced at Treacle Farls, I thought it said Farts, and wot's a quahog, MMario?

So many recipes and so little time......(sigh)

I think so. There are loads of recipes here (and on the Annexe) that were not included. Somebody step up, please? I don't know how to do it or have the binder equipment.

Thanks for reminding me of last night's chatroom promise to art, sorcha!

Lotvarrick Pie (Apple Butter Pie)

Pastry for a 9 inch pie.

3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup apple butter
2 eggs, beaten
4 tablespoons flour
1/4 tsp cream of tartar
1/4 tsp soda
2 cups milk
1/4 tsp nutmeg

Mix the sugar, flour, soda and cream of tartar; blend in the melted butter, add the beaten eggs, apple butter, then the milk. Pour into the pie shell and sprinkle with the nutmeg. Bake at 425 degrees for 10 minutes, then at 350 degrees till the custard is set.

This from Edna Staebler's Canadian classic cookbook, "Food that Really Schmecks: Mennonite Country Cooking". I do believe my mum told me that ol' Edna has just celebrated her 98th birthday. Rather gives the lie to all those health cautions about what food is good for you and what food ain't. Food that Really Schmecks is a testament to high fat cookery! Rock On!

And happy apple gathering, art.

siân
