Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Midnight on the Water From: GUEST,stew Date: 25 Apr 12 - 10:16 AM Midnight On The Water words: John Croziat, 1976, tune: traditional There are times when I am blue Thinking of you and me At midnight on the water And how it used to be There are stars among the trees In some old memories I know At midnight on the water, Not so long ago. Though they're gone like floating dreams The scenes were there as in a mirror Made by the moon upon the water And our love was never stronger But the picture was broken by the waves we left behind At midnight on the water Once upon a time. There are times when I am blue Thinking of you and me At midnight on the water And how it used to be In the stillness of the lake Where these thoughts take me again At midnight on the water Do you remember when? Though they're gone like floating dreams The scenes were there as in a mirror Made by the moon upon the water And our love was never stronger But the picture was broken By the waves we left behind At midnight on the water Once upon a time. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Midnight on the Water From: GUEST,Jacob B Date: 25 Apr 12 - 09:52 AM I don't know about "One More For the Road", but "Banish Misfortune" is an Irish fiddle tune. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Midnight on the Water From: GUEST,Goldie Date: 25 Apr 12 - 07:54 AM I've enjoyed singing this song, learned from the singing of Norma Waterson, though I've known little about it. Am I right in thinking that each of the lines refers to a fiddle tune? so not only "Midnight on the Water" (which Is a different tune from that used for the song), "The Lark in the Morning" (which I also know as a song), and "One More For the Road" too? If so, it's so cleverly constructed - as well as being a delight to sing. |
Subject: Lyr Add: MIDNIGHT ON THE WATER (Judith Edelman) From: GUEST,Midchuck in Montana Date: 05 Aug 03 - 01:16 PM This kind of messes up my head, but I like it. P. ********************************************* Midnight on the Water Lyrics: Judith Edelman No one was out in hour eleven No one was watching one last moon rise In the town they all slept undisturbed by my engines Though I tore through the still of their midnight sky Twenty-one years, I lied about my age. They taught me to fly, they gave me a plane And with my country as my witness And my orders to obey It was midnight on the water When I blew that town away. CHO: Midnight on the water Moon, town, sky Midnight on the water Goodbye. I know that town and another just liket I have brothers and sisters and a mother still there In my dream they are sleeping down by the water It's a beautiful picture from high in the air Then I'm down in the town, calling everybody's name No one can hear me, no one can hear the plane. Then I wake up in a cold sweat Every night it is the same Midnight on the water, and I can't go home again. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: MIDNIGHT ON THE WATER From: Hamish Date: 04 Aug 03 - 07:32 AM Well yes, except that the melody for the song insn't exactly the same as that for the tune. Similar, yes: but different enough to be, er, different... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: MIDNIGHT ON THE WATER From: musicmick Date: 04 Aug 03 - 01:08 AM Dear Cruiser, I beg to disagree. I am a folk "purist", as my readers well know. But there is a considerable tradition of lyricists using traditional tunes to great advantage. Thomas Moore's "Bendemeer's Stream" and "Believe Me, If All Those Endearing Young Charms" use traditional melodies as do Robert Burns' "Dainty Davie" and "Flow Gently, Sweet Afton". It might well be that there has not yet been a lyric written that is sufficient to the beauty of "Midnight On The Water". I was not impressed with the one I saw on this thread. Maybe, I'll give it a try. It is such a lovely air and it would make a wonderful song. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: MIDNIGHT ON THE WATER From: Cruiser Date: 03 Aug 03 - 02:06 PM Wedding lyrics to such an beautiful fiddle tune seems a musical violation of some sort. Many instrumentals are meant to be just that, instrumental. Now if the lyrics are part of the original melody, then OK. Words can help one learn a fiddle tune, but Midnight on the Water! No! |
Subject: Tune Add: MIDNIGHT ON THE WATER From: masato sakurai Date: 03 Aug 03 - 09:49 AM Entry at The Fiddler's Companion: MIDNIGHT ON THE WATER. Old-Time, Waltz. USA, Texas. D Major. DDAD. AABB (Spandaro): AA'BB' (Brody, Matthiesen, Reiner & Anick). This popular composition is usually credited to Texas fiddler Luke Thomasson, although it has been published that Luke's son Benny (a famous Texas-style fiddler who popularized the melody) long remembered the night he heard both his father and uncle composing the tune on the family porch (c. 1900?). Several sources have noted this tune's resemblance to an Oklahoma-collected tune called "Old Paint," and there is an ongoing debate about whether "Midnight" is derivative of "Paint" (or vice versa). The Library of Congress recording "Cowboy Songs, Ballads, and Cattle Calls from Texas" (LOC lp L28), collected by John A. Lomax and edited by Duncan Emrich, has a version of the "Paint" song by Jess Morris which has quite similar melodic material with "Midnight on the Water." The liner notes to the album point out that Morris was born in 1878 and would perhaps have been contemporary with the Thomassons, who, like Morris, lived in the Texas panhandle. Subject: RE: Attribution added: DT authors PermaThread From: Jim Dixon Date: 03 Aug 03 - 09:35 AM OK, "Midnight on the Water" isn't in DT yet, but on the assumption that it will be, maybe this will head off confusion. "Midnight on the Water" was a fiddle tune long before anyone wrote words for it, and it is still often recorded as such. It is often assumed to be traditional but Luke Thomasson probably wrote it. His son, Benny Thomasson, recorded it in 1970. (Click here for more information.) John Croziat wrote one set of lyrics, and Kate Wolf recorded them in 1977. These have been posted here, here, here, and here. Ron Kavana wrote and recorded different lyrics in 1989. They have been posted here, here, here, and here. Many people have recorded one version or another, but I haven't taken the time to sort them all out.^^ I moved this message here from another thread. |

Subject: Lyr Add: MIDNIGHT ON THE WATER (Ron Kavana) From: masato sakurai Date: 20 Jul 03 - 02:51 AM Garry Gillard's new link is Midnight on the Water. Midnight on the Water I never thought much of that fancy dancing With my two left feet and my roving eye. But when the band plays that slow air in three-four time, I could dance with my darling until morning comes. Chorus: Play me a fiddle tune, sing me a song! Banish misfortune, my time is not long! Midnight on the water, so steady and slow. The lark in the morning, one more for the road. Midnight on the water, so steady and slow. Let's have another drink and set them up Joe. Well, I've done all my dancing down in those bar-rooms. Dancing and drinking they go hand in glove. So give a beer to the fiddler, and play all the old tunes So I can dance closer to the one that I love! 2* Chorus |
